Homemade Christmas Tree  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12195) 4 years ago

A friend just mentioned how she got a new tree this year and that reminded me of the tree my husband made us.

We had an artificial tree where the holes had worn out and we couldn't put the branches in..So my husband found an old tree that we have growing everywhere around here that was starting to die and cut it down. It wasn't very big, so he cut off all the branches leaving the trunk. Then he drilled holes for each branch and what is really cool about this is, we didn't have to use those circle branches you get with a fake tree to cover the "stick" because we have a real trunk, so it looks real..All we need is a pine spray and unless you actually touched the branch, you would think we had a real tree..wub

Then it gets even better, I took those circles and wrapped them around a hanger I shaped into a circle and then decorated that to make my own homemade wreath..w00t

So, instead of throwing it out, we reused it and made another decoration..Now that I read this, maybe I should have put this in my frugal interest... confused

Have you reused something for the holidays to make it last longer or to stretch out out to make more with what you have???

Hi carmelanirel, what a wonderful and usual idea. Way to go, that is awesome. I bet it's very beautiful! So do you have a photo of your Christmas tree? Happy myLotting

No, we haven't put the tree up yet and when I do get a picture, it won't be until we make it to the library before I can upload and share them..But when I do, I will, hopefully it won't be after Christmas..

Wow!! That is awesome....I'm sure it is beautiful...and you made your own wreath which is really neat....

I try to make everything work out each year...unless it is totally beyond help then I will toss it..

When I was a little girl my grandma always had a real Christmas tree for us...As a grown up mine have all been artificial....I am so frightened of fire....

Thanks for the tips...

I am not frightened by a fire, but not only does it costs every year to get a real tree, but I would rather not use a tree if not necessary to cut down, better for the environment.. So if your artificial tree ever wears out and you or your husband has this skill, you can make your own too..:)

Yes, we can..and I found that you can buy branches from the thrift store...so that is a good idea if needed..

I have never done any thing end remotely like that, but I think it is a really cool idea. You saved yourselves a decent amount of money doing that. I would also be torn between posting in Frugal living or Christmas.

Yeah, I thought Christmas right away and was almost done typing when I realized, that this could also be posted in the frugal section..and I wasn't going to try to post it there after opening up this box. way this computer is, I would have lost everything by it freezing up..rolleyes

That is a very good idea and very creative. My husband and I come up with some things like that too sometimes. That was a very good idea that you and your husband had. We stretch out with what we have alot of times too.

Do you have any good ideas for Christmas to help stretch things further? Would love to hear about them..

I try to be very frugal and reuse and repurpose as much as possible, but I have not ever done anything quit that extreme as to make a tree, but it sounds like it was not only very practical but also very attractive. I mend every thing that I can, or remake them. Not only at Christmas, but year round. I don't like to throw anything out unless it is absolutely worthless.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12195)  4 years ago

You sound like myself and another mylotter here, we both try to be creative and reuse everything we can..It can be really fun..

I'm not sure I would consider myself very creative. I am very frugal. Some people consider me cheap. But I grew up with a mother who was a Depression Bride and she had a "waste not, want not" philosophy. Her response to things you wanted was "if it hurts you to want, stop wanting" (not that we didn't get things, while we were not spoiled we did not do completely without). And then of course, I came of age during the hippie generation where it was very popular to live without and although I grew up with an older brother and sisters who seem to think it is really cool to toss everything out if you haven't used it in the last 2 weeks, I find that just when I decide that I really don't need something and decide to get rid of it (which in my case means giving it away), I suddenly discover within a very short period of time that I really needed or wanted that particular item and I end up replacing it, or hating myself for getting rid of it, so I almost never get rid of anything.
