Dog is driving me insane! |

| We have a 6-month old Lab/Pitbull mix puppy that is a little more hyperactive than we could have ever imagined! He likes to take hold on our pant legs while we are walking and tries to play tug of war. He is constantly running around, getting into things after we tell him "no", and is just extremely hyper. We try to play with him and take him out enough to drain some of his energy, but most of the time, it doesn't work. He'll sometimes bite when he's playing and while it doesn't hurt some of the time, we spray him with a refillable water sprayer so he knows that it isn't allowed. We only spray him when he bites and yet he hasn't deciphered that biting isn't allowed. We love our puppy and have a lot of fun times with him, but we try not to play with him in an aggressive way. What should we do to help him not be so... crazy? | | | | | |

| | Have you taken him to obedience classes? I'm sure these would be very helpful. Also, how often do you walk him? Hyper dogs have to be walked a lot because they have so much energy. I found an article about hyper dogs online that would probably help you a lot. Here is the link: http://www.collargirl.com/hyper_calm.html | | | | | | |

| | That is one of the options that didn't even cross my mind! We walk him pretty much every day, unless it's unbearably cold or raining. Thanks for the link! | | | |

| | well he is only 6 months old so hopefully he will grow out of it being an owner of labs and pit bulls I know how big of a pain they can be LOL I dont normally recommend this but it sounds like you already doing alot of things right you can get a shock collar I know it sounds cruel but the amperage is low and it wont really hurt the pup it just scares them a little they will learn to associate certain behaviors with the negative response of being shocked generally you can train a stubborn pit bull in a matter of weeks this way. | | | | | | |

| | Some dogs breeds are biters, the pit bull is famous for doing so. They bite and hold. You might try using something like a rope pull toy with him, give him something he's allowed to bite. | | | | | | |

| | Think of a puppy like a 2 or 3 year old human. They don't really understand the lay of than yet, and yet they have all this bounding energy. They are also cutting teeth and this is agravating to them, and gives them the need to chew or bite at things. All of this behavior will stop shortly after the dog turns one year of age. In the mean time give the puppy something of his own that he can chew on. This will help with the teething. Make a big deal about it being his, so he can begin to learn the difference between what is his and what is not his. Also keep doing what you are doing with the spray bottle. When he grabs a pants leg, get down at his level, grab is mouth gently and look right in to his eyes and tell him no in a very stern voice. Everytime he does this repeat, making sure to look in his eyes. The more you engage the dog the better dog he will be dogs respond to eye contact. If you keep repeating a solid and stearn he will eventually get it. Puppies need lots of repitition, in order to get things just like a 2 year old child does. They have not developed the self control yet, but luckily it takes dogs a shorter time to learn this than it does children. | | | | | | |

| | He is just a little baby, with a lot of energy. I guess he need a playmate to help with all that stored up energy. I can't think of anything else for you to do. He sounds like he is a lot of fun and cute too. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Texasheartland, I have read through all the responses so far and agree that when your puppy nips immediatley make a yelping sound yourself, I would also add to this to put a rawhide bone into his mouth also so he gets the idesa not to bite you but to bite on the bone as at this age he doesn't realsie he is hurting and is probably teething also. I understand that all dogs need exercise but I have recently enrolled in a training course for my own pup, a border collie, also a very energetic breed. However when puppies they do in fact need 10/15 minutes exercise at a time and then put to rest in their crate otherwise overexercise can cause hyperactivity and also cause joint problems when older. On training nights we are told not to walk the puppies at all before the session. I use the water bottle for stopping him from barking and other things but yelping if nipping seems to work the best and he will put his paw up and apologise. Also always say off rather than down if jumping up as a dog associates down with laying down. Keep commands to a minimum, off, sit, stay, down, heel and praise at all times when they are doing well. Good luck. I am goinf through it all myself so do know. Huggles. Ellie :D | | | | | | |

| | You will probably have to exercise him as much as possible. Let him know you are in control. Most dogs are pretty hyper at that age. I wish you luck. I'm sure as he gets older he will calm some. | | | | | | |
