TaDAH!!! The Changing of the Gards this weekend! WOW what a sight! |
| |
| ‘Gard’ is Svenglish( swedish-english) for curtain.. which is gardin in Swedish.. pronounced garDIN!! Gards is Svenglish for curtainS,, which is garDINer in Swedish.. (yes.. I know, but that's how Swedish is!) THIS weekend is OUR weekend for the official changing of the CURTAINS!! YES the GARDS! The candles, the curtains and all the other delightful colourful warm things that herald in the jule tide! The whole street!! It is glorious to see and splendid against the dreary cold darkness. When I as out tonight with the dog, it was a beacon in the night to come across the valley home to my street.. what a glorious sight. Such traditions warm the house and the heart. Do you have similar customs to accommodate the change in season and the winter darkness?? | | Winter curtains & Candle sticks herald in Winterso | | | | |

| | I'm from much farther south and don't get so much darkness. The only thing we have to usher in the winter season are the Christmas decorations. | | | | | | |

| | I realize now that I have been naughty and have completely ignored your question about what I personally do for the changing seasons........ I love candles in the winter. I tend to burn them all around the house (especially scented ones that smell like winter - banana nut bread, pumpkin pie, hazelnut coffee, etc.) I tend to decorate more for the holidays than for the season. In summer, I put bunting (red, white and blue, of course) around our front porch. I have several plaques with patriotic phrases on them for the porch also. In the fall, I have a silk leaf garland in fall colors that I place around the front door. We have pumpkins, indian corn, and the like to decorate with. And of course for Christmas, we have a decorated tree in the living room. Lots of decorations (figurines, lights, stockings, etc.) all around the house. We put greenery garlands around the front windows and door. My son won a huge fresh greenery wreath with a red bow for the front of the house. We have an extra artificial tree that will be on our porch. We will put lights around the tree, the windows and the front door. My husband is especially "into" the season this year(yippee! I'm not doing all the work this year) and wants to go get some more lights. | | | |

| | Thanks for indulging a mother's pride! They are two very wonderful children in so many ways! You have a daughter that I have heard about. How old is she? Does she live near you at all? Does she visit during the holiday season? | | | |

| | Your changing of the GARDS has a look so classy it makes our Yuletide decorations all look somewhat garish and over the top. If you walk the streets at night here you can see the incredible trouble people have taken to decorate their homes with twinkling coloured lights and illuminated Christmas figures and animals. When people gather to look at the displays they give some money and the money goes to the householder's chosen charity. Some councils give a prize for the best display. My husband has an obsession with balloons. On Christmas Eve he hangs them from trees all down the drive and on the gates and all around the house. I actually don't know why. Perhaps he wasn't allowed to have them when he was a child? Balloons sometimes make nasty noises. I hate balloons! | | | | | | |

| | balloons!!??? I dont know that tradition at all, no..intersting. he could start one.. or is trying to?. I guess every place has its own traditions..Even people of all diferent faiths or religions here take the opportunity to have lights in windows against the dreary darkness. it warms the hearts. Perhaps your customs there is not so much different?? maybe more of it, could be? | | | |

| | Glad you got to the point because you were loosing me and confusing me. Most people around here have strings of electric lights that they put up this time of year. We will be getting a tree and putting lights on that, too. We will be getting some nice smelling branches, probably balsom, cedar, and pine to put on our staircase. Reminds me, my husband said he found the curtains for winter and he was supposed to give them to me to put up so we can use less electricity. He changed the screens for windows out weeks ago and that has been a big help. Take care | | | | | | |

| | Ah, the winter solstice, I see that for your tags, once I observed the yule log fire at someone's house (in their fire place). We did the exchange for gifts, you bring something extra and take something you need, eveything put in a pile and people taking turns giving and receiving (taking) as per what they can give and what they need. Hot mulled cidar is a must. Take care | | | |

| | The 'Gards' are so very cheerful. What a nice tradition of officially changing the 'gardiner'. like we don new dress for a festival or special occasion. It must be a beautiful sight. The candles, lights, vibrant colours........all to combat cold. Traditions everywhere have evolved with great underlying reason. All to usher in some good cheer in people's lives. Thanks for the lovely picture. It raised my spirits instantly. | | | | | | |

| | Hallo dear daffodil, Thanks that you enjoyed the little journey into my home. My whole street is like this but for one home.. they will no doubt be away for jul,, they travel very much all the time. Otherwise it is wonderfully light, like many stars in the dark sky.. When it is dark so early, you need the light to be well, to feel well. | | | |

| | I used to listen to a Steely Dan song called Changing of the Guards. I always thought they were saying changing of the Gods. We do have similar customs that go along with the seasons although at the moment I could not name one. The changing of the workers in a factory is something that I notice the most.
