We have not. I was advised to buy a refurbished computer, but I wanted a new one. We do, however, buy stuff from opened boxes, that is stuff that has been returned, but has never been used. That is how we got our Boise stereo at about $400, more than half of what we would have paid for it regularly. We seem to go for the opened box scenerio.

I am going to give the gps devices as gifts, so I hesitate to buy the refurbished. However, I have been using a refurbished computer for 10 years and have not had any trouble with it.

I bought my kodak camera refurbished. I bought it almost 6 years ago and it still works fine for me. I also bought my husband's ipod shuffle refurbished. It came directly from apple so I figured if anyone was going to refurbish it that it would be ok coming straight from the company that makes them. It has worked fine too.

Thanks for your comments. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurbished product for myself but I am looking to buy gps devices for my daughter and her husband for Christmas, I hesitate to buy the refurbished especially when I have never had gps myself, and I will be giving these as a gift.

I have had a few refurbished electronics that just didnt work well for me so now we avoid the refurbished products. I think that when some things are not working well you just cant fix it up and make it new. I know that isnt a very frugal way to think about it but if I am going to spend the money I only want to do it once.

I agree. Refurbished products are cheaper for that reason and as the old saying goes you get what you pay for.

I am about to get my first refurbished item. It is a laptop. My husband has been checking around for months, knowing that this computer is about to die. It gets more and more unreliable all the time. Husband talked to our local computer guy, who has worked on our computers for about ten years and has done really well by us. He decided that we would go with a refurbished laptop. It should come in to our computer guys shop sometime this week. He will check it out good, we will also go ahead and buy the extended maintenance contract for it. Our comp man told my husband that these machine have been out as a lease item for a year, then are refurbished by the company. What I am getting is a Toshiba. I am really looking forward to having a laptop instead of a desk top computer.

Thanks for your response. So far I am receiving only good comments from those who have purchased refurbished electronics.

I have bought them before. I have boughten refurbished Sony products. I find them to be excellent quality. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them as long as they have some kind of guarnatee or warranty on them. They are usually good.

Thanks for your input. We bought a refurbished computer once in 1999 and it is still working great.

We never have but my FIL has. Seems to have worked out fine for him. Everything was fully functional and lasted just a tadbit less than what a new piece should have lasted. I think is a nice and cheap route to go to get that piece of electronics one wants or needs;)
