HP Laptop with NVidia Graphics Card Crash and Burn |
| |
| I did some research and found that this is a common problem, but not sure if anyone had any luck with getting HP to warranty the issue. I had a HP Laptop dv2000 series with a NVidia graphics card. One day I went to turn the laptop on only to have it beep three beeps at me and never start up. Having my second computer, I did what any other geek would do and Google "HP 3 beeps on start up". Got tons of information... Problem: NVidia was using inadequate materials for the graphics card integration with the motherboard. With time, the heat buildup from the computer would actually melt the connection on the board. For most people this occurred after the warranty expired; however, one person said that they complained enough that HP supposedly created an addendum to the warranty to cover this issue for those outside of the warranty. I have yet to try to get my system repaired because I want to get my information off the hard drive before I send it in because I sensitive information on it. (Yes, I know how to retrieve my info, just lazy in moving it all over at once.) I am just curious if this happened to anyone else. Was it an HP or did it crossover into other manufacturers? Have heard of HP or someone making an addendum to a warranty to cover a major problem like this? If it has happened to you, did get the system repaired under warranty or out? | | | | | |

| | Glad I could help with the issue. If he just bought in now, there may not be much of an issue though. Most of the people that I saw that had this problem bought about the same time I got mine (1-2 years ago). The cooling fan is a great idea... I just never thought of buying one because I keep my laptop in a cool environment with decent circulation. Oh well, live and learn. | | | |

| | Well, I guess its up to us to keep our laptop cool at all times. I do believe that there might be a manufacture problem since they are trying to pack as much power into the laptop but failed to create a good cooling system to keep the laptop cool. This is a common problem among all laptop manufacture I guess. I have an Acer and HP laptop, and when they are running at full steam, the vent is extremely hot. Hot enough to burn your hand if you place your hand near the vent for 5 seconds! Of course, there are simple solutions to this problem. First as mentioned by the person above me, is a cooling mat. Some comes with fans powered by USB plug. You can also find some stuff to elevate the base of your laptop. Second, just place a fan beside your laptop. It works wonder. As for the 'HP problem', I don't think anyone will make an addendum to a warranty to cover that problem. Its hard to pin point whos fault it is. | | | | | | |

| | It is blame game then... it is my fault for not having a cooling system, but it is their fault for not providing a cooling system to counter the power/heat that they are producing. They know there is a problem, but claim it is my responsibility to keep the machine in a cool working environment that can overcome that power/heat issue. Nice of them to tell me... I will test my luck later this week to see if I can get them to honor the warranty. | | | |

| | I have a HP 6820s laptop. I bought it year and a half ago. It works great but it is constantly overheting. It's not crashing down yet, but the ventilator is starting to be very loud and it annoys me. I would like to clean the cooling vent but I don't know how to! I am thinking about buying a laptop cooler but will it help? | | | |

| | I have a HP DV9000 series laptop that I spend nearly $2000 to acquire in mid-2007. I struggled with the lack of 64-bit drivers for Vista for a long time. It ran well after that. In early 2008 I started playing a lot of youtube videos with nursery rhymes for my 2 yr old daughter and somewhere around mid-2008 the laptop started behaving weirdly occasionally with some funny pink and green vertical lines appearing at times. The graphics finally failed in the latter half of 2008, just soon after my warranty expired. Called up HP and they said it's outside warranty and they cannot help me. I have also like you been sitting on moving my data out. I have a lot of precious as well as sensitive data on the system waiting to be moved out. Checking the internet on the matter recently I figured that I am not alone in this happening. The HP - Nvidia combination seems to have a problem. It will be helpful with somebody with legal expertise on the subject let us know how to get HP to extend the warranty on these machines and fix the issue that some of us have run into. It's definitely not an end user fault if there are so many people reporting the same type of problem. | | | | | | |

| | hey I bought an HP laptop model: dv9222tx. I bought it to play games with portability though its a large laptop with 17" screen but i liked that when i was buying it. I encountered the same problem you did just after 5 months of my warranty period. So i couldn't rectify this problem through customer care cause they say that they need to change the motherboard but its way costly... I found a place where they can change this nvidia chip but they don't give any guarantee that for how many days it will last long.. Though they can fix this but it will cost you around 70 to 80 dollars.. So i was just wondering if u have any other solution and i want to know that where r u from? thanks... plzzz do reply coz i need to use my laptop again. | | | | | | |

| | I have a similar problem with my dv2000. The screen started to flicker/change colours. Now when I boot, the screen is messed up and split 6 ways. I believe this has been caused by an overheating issue because the laptop used to get red hot and sometimes shut itself down. I am now just 4 months out of warranty! I have just contacted 'hp total care' and am waiting for a response from them. Did you managed to get your laptop fixed in the end? Did they extend your warranty? where did you hear this from? The worst part is that I work for HP in software development so you would think we would have some special perks with support....but nope | | | | | | |
