Sorry gang. | | I wish to extend apologizes to my friends whom have been putting up posts like crazy, but I have been to preoccupied to address. I hope you will forgive me.
I am as most of you know, deeply involved in politics here. And Canada is having something of a blow out in our federal parliament.
The current ruling party, the Conservative Party, has more seats than any other single party in parliament, but they don't hold a majority of all of the seats. They are therefore, a minority government.
The Liberal Party has the next largest number. Then the Bloc Quebecois (a separatist party) and finally the New Democratic Party.
The Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party (NDP) have joined together to create a coalition that hopes to unseat the Conservatives. But together, the Liberals and the NDP don't have as many seats as the Conservatives do alone.
So, the Liberal/NDP coalition has sought the support of the one party from Quebec that seeks to destroy Canada. And, for as much as they can be trusted, the Bloc has agreed to support this coalition.
Canada is now in a bit of a pickle because Canada doesn't actually have a constitution. We have a Governor General who is the representative of the Queen. But Canada doesn't have a Queen. British Parliament forbids Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors, from being monarch of another country. Canada is a sovereign nation. Queen Liz ain't our queen. That being the case... WHO EXACTLY IS CANADA'S MONARCH?Nobody knows.
So now this Governor General who is supposed to hold mythical powers granted her by a mythical monarch is supposed to decide the fate of a nation which only went to the polls on Oct 14 and which now faces either another federal election or a coalition of parties whose major support comes from a party dedicated to Canada's demise.
I have been joining so many others in having fits over this whole deal. I have phoned the GG's office as has so many other concerned Canadians.
And ultimately, this is exactly what Canada needs. I'm lovin' it!

My understanding is that the GG acts on the queens behalf right? In other words, she doesn't set her own agenda, but carries out the queens agenda? So does this not make the Queen in violation of her own law, only thinky veild by a proxy? As for the Bloc, even in a coolition with the NDP and the Liberals, it seems doubtfull the NDP or the Lib's are going to support any kind of seperation. and with Chiroc no longer running France, they pretty much lost any support they had from there anyway, which seemed to me, the chief insigator in the seperation movement. Cripe, why don't you guys just do what we did a few hundred years ago, lol.

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | "So let me get this straight mike, because the queen isn't technicly a monarch of Canada, she (the queen) has to have a proxy in parliment, the governor general." Sorry. No, the queen doesn't have any real power over Canadian, Indian, or Australian parliaments. There is no constitutional restrictions because there is no constitution at all. What they have only is traditional precedents.
"My understanding is that the GG acts on the queens behalf right? In other words, she doesn't set her own agenda, but carries out the queens agenda?" No not that either. The monarch, AKA Crown, is the government of the day. But parliament has decided that they have no confidence in that governing party, so they are asking the Governor General to use powers of tradition alone to change the governing groups. Which by traditional powers, she could do just that. However, there is a moral aspect to this insanity that few are talking about. The majority of Canadians rejected the coalition parties individually. They are attempting a coup d'etate of sorts over this mess.
"So does this not make the Queen in violation of her own law, only thinky veild by a proxy?" The queen has no part of Canada. We are a sovereign nation. "As for the Bloc, even in a coolition with the NDP and the Liberals, it seems doubtfull the NDP or the Lib's are going to support any kind of seperation. and with Chiroc no longer running France, they pretty much lost any support they had from there anyway, which seemed to me, the chief insigator in the seperation movement. Cripe, why don't you guys just do what we did a few hundred years ago, lol." Now isn't this just stupid??? Can you understand now, why I am so insanely rabid about what I'm trying to do here? Makes yer freaking head swim don't it????

xfahctor (5395) | 1 year ago | lol, yeh, the more I learn, the more I am astounded by my own ignorance (Eintein). So, let me ask this then, who's idea was it to even HAVE a GG then? Why did they not just give the PM the same authority? I must admit mike, I'm more confused now than I was before. You certainly have your work cut out for you, but it is good work you do and a good fight you fight. In the beginning of our own revolution, the revolutionaries were in a painfully minute minority.

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | In the days when Canada was a colony the same as the Pre-Revolutionary US, we were saddled with British Parliamentary politics. The GG was the monarch's rep in Canada and essentially did the same things as the ruling monarchs have done in England.
However, in 1921, Canada was a signator to the Treaty of Versailles after WWI.
That treaty was only to be signed by soveriegn nations. That was the instant that Canada became a soveriegn and distinct nation of it's own.
But in doing so, we as a nation were never given the benefit of a constitution and instead carried on with the traditions we were so accustomed to being screwed by for so long.
We advance token to 2001 and a collection of men sat down across a kitchen table in Nanaimo BC and discussed this issue at length. That collection of men was the founding of the party I lead.

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | Pat Buchanan (Gotta love him) once referred to Canada as Soviet Canuckistan. Is it possible he was right?
In response to a whole bunch of beer sponsored t-shirts that said "I Am Canadian" whish used the name of Molson Canadian beer, I had my own t-shirt made that said "I am Canuckistani". It was the real beginning of my seperatist adventure.
However, with my coming to this party, I found that Canada could be salvaged from break up if the things our party espouses are offered up to Canadians.
That however requires the dismantling of the current parliamentary system in its entirety. I'm up for it.

I think that's part of the reason the US has had such an image problem world wide. The average American just doesn't know a whole lot about other countries.

| | 5. celticrogue (371) | 1 year ago | Hi, Mike!
Thanks for educating this dimwit on the current state of government of Canada. While I had known that Canada has a parliment and Prime Minister, I had thought that Canada was a parlimentary monarchy under the Queen of England. I learned new things today!
I also did not know that Canada does not have a constitution!! With the state of politics, will it be possible to come up with one?
One more question: When the current holder of the office of the Governor General quits, who and how is the next Governor General chosen?
Lastly, I visited the website that you had linked to in an earlier comment. Good luck in your endeavors!

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | Canada will not be getting a constitution without a real national unity crisis first. The problem being that our country exists by smoke and mirrors. There really isn't any foundation to it at all. That's why Russia has been able to successfully challenge our claims to sovereignty of the Arctic.
That is a postion chosen by and filled by the sitting Prime Minister of the day. It is an appointed postion and carries sybolic powers that are oddly enough being put to the test today. Nobody ever actually thought this day would ever come. Oooops!

| | 6. thegreatdebater (1033) | 1 year ago | Personally I really like Canada, I live about an hour from the boarder and have traveled many times up there for a nice weekend. The people in Canada are very nice, and they keep their cities very clean. My boss is from Canada, and he said that he really liked it up there, but your government is alittle screwy. From your post it sounds like he is correct. I have listened to Canadian radio and it reminds me of something you hear in a communist country. They will disagree with the government to a point, but then they point out the good things and say it could be worse: Bush could be our president. Everyone has a good laugh, and they move on. Good luck Mike.

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | The government exists by smoke and mirrors. The media live off of the largess of this system.
There is a very large, very linked dependency on the status quo.
I however am dedicated to rocking the boat, turning over the apple cart, throwing the baby out with the bath water, and a whole bunch more saying like this to infer that I am an agitator of mammal solid wastes.

I knew there's a struggle between the conservative and the 'liberal' like there is in many nations including my own, but that was basically it.. That was very interesting to read about, and I hope and pray things turn out for the good! Aligning with a party that wants to undermine the nation, doesn't sound like a good idea to me!! I can certainly appreciate your alarm, and it alarms me too!

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | Well parliament got a prorogue? They are on a break. The GG did the predicted thing and sent everyone home to cool off. Will it change anything? Boythat's going to be tough to say.
But you can rest assured that one thing is not going to happen. The children in the federal playpen are not going to have any adult supervision or control.
The people have no rights to control politicians anywhere in Canada.

It was good that our first Prime Minister Bustamante and Premier Norman Manley make a constitution that has to be govern. I know that things will work out in the best interest of the country. Our GG has to do things on the advice on the Prime Minister. Why don't your GG do the things that she know is right?

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | The Conservatives got the prorogue they were wanting. Now they get a breather into the new year. Then if the budget fails to pass, then it's election time again.
Our GG did what was least offensive for now. At the end of January she will face this again I suspect.
In the meantime Canadians will get to pressure their MPs to settle down. I wonder if they will?
