Color Me PISSED! |
| |
| I took the day off today. It was the first day since Oct. 16 that I didn't work. It was a pretty nice day here in Southwest Florida. The temperature probably got to about 78, but without my beloved humidity it felt rather cool to me. OK, so this morning I washed all the windows and doors that lead to the lanai ... about 30 feet of glass, maybe more. Then I weeded around the lanai. Then I installed a new mailbox (the old one fell off its standard yesterday) so I could get all those incoming checks. (Big laugh!) Then I read the paper and decided it was time for a bike ride. I did a great 34 miles today, the majority at about 11-14 MPH, but I hit some headwinds on my return. I was exhausted! I finished my ride by going to my local distillery for a 4-pack of beer. Enroute I took a spin around the Wachovia bank where I've found $5.00 and $42.00. I found a quarter today. Then at my distillery, I spotted a penny, which I'm not too proud to bend down and pick up. Net find: 26¢. Then I decided to drive (by car) to the beach to tip a couple of beers and enjoy some rays. On the way at a traffic light I was approached by a group of teeny-boppers (average age I'd guess to be 13-14. They were all over the street soliciting "donations" for their hockey team. I looked in my console and my coin-carrier had 7 quarters. I scooped them out and dropped them into a helmet. The light changed; I moved on. Less than a half-mile later, at another traffic light, I was approached by two more teeny-boppers. "Wanna donate to our hockey team?" I looked at the pre-dude and said, "I gave at the office. Wanna donate for FOOD? I gave just two blocks ago." The pre-dude looked at me as if I were crazy and called me a cheap old *astard! I wanted to get out of the car and grab his head and pound it to the concrete. Instead I moved on, fuming out of both ears, and continued to the beach. The more I thought about it, the more pissed I became. When I was in school, if I took part in extracurricular activities, my parents paid for them. I didn't jeopardize my safety or that of drivers on busy roads, helmet in hand looking for a handout! I'm in "snowbird" country, and traffic is very heavy from mid-November until late April or early May. I find it offensive (and ILLEGAL) for a bunch of prepubescents to take over major arteries, putting themselves and drivers at risk with their soliciting. I find it INCREDIBLE that their school permits this sort of activity and I find it MORE incredible that their parents (sperm donors and sperm recipients might be more fitting) would ALLOW such activity. I'm a one-eyed driver. I have never had an accident, but it TRULY pisses me off when this sort of soliciting is permitted. Our law enforcement officers simply close their eyes to this sort of thing. I say, "Wanna blow a tuba? Use YOUR lungs." "Wanna play hockey? Fine by me, but don't jeopardize MY safety in order to get whatever equipment you need." If your PARENTS want you to play hockey, let them ante up and PAY FOR IT! Don't beg from strangers while putting your safety (and more importantly, MINE) at risk. And don't call me a cheap *dastard, when I already "donated" $1.75 to your cause only a few blocks back! Memo to self: Who was there collecting funds for YOUR senior prom, RJ? Nobody. How about for your class trip to D.C.? Nobody. How about anything else? Nobody. And I got by ... without begging and risking lives! © 2008 RJScott | | | | | |

| | The cost of extra curricular activities continues to sky rocket, but yea, they can have a bake sale or something. Around here the kids have car washes, they actually DO something for the "donations". Panhandling, and that's exactly what they are doin, is not a great way to teach a child to "earn" a living or make their own way! Geesh. | | | | | | |

| | You're right, Irish. Panhandling teaches a child nothing. When someone DOES something for a cause, I don't mind making a donation ... even more than $1.75. I've had my car washed by a high school group and they did a mighty fine job. They charged $5.00, which is $3.00 less than my local drive-thru and I was pleased with the results. They even did the insides of the windows. All I had to do was go through the drive-through to vacuum it. That's a SERVICE for the buck! | | | |

| | WOW, very exciting day you had. I totally agree with you on the risk those teeny boppers were taking on that highway stopping traffic. It should be illegal for them to do that. And even if someone doesn't want to give that is their choice and they should be treated with respect. That one hockey player or solicitor spoiled it for the whole bunch or the next group that might want to do a fund raising stopping traffic, illegal way of getting donations. And I wouldn't a appreciate some little turd calling me an astard either. | | | | | | |

| | I see it this way: You had a FABULOUS day until some kid that you don't even know called you a name. Why let that ruin your day? Maybe he was having a bad day too. Be thankful for all the great things that happened. You say "I find it offensive (and ILLEGAL) for a bunch of prepubescents to take over major arteries, putting themselves and drivers at risk with their soliciting." You also said "Then I decided to drive (by car) to the beach to tip a couple of beers and enjoy some rays." It's ILLEGAL to drink and drive. So, is it that the kids really shouldn't be 'begging' or that you need less 'obstacles'? LOL I'm not trying to give you hell, I'm just trying to be funny, yet get my point across.... I hope you have a wonderful SAFE holiday season. Take care. | | | | | | |

| | Ah, but I wasn't drinking and driving. After my bike ride, being Diabetic, I had TWO cans of beer, which served only to bring my reduced blood count up to normal. I realize that one should not drink while driving, which I do not do. In Florida it's illegal to have a can (or bottle) of beer open while driving. In my lifetime I have never been in an accident. I'm a careful driver, but I DO take exception to a bunch of teenyboppers inhaibiting my driving space ... risking life and limb while insulting me. Your thoughts? | | | |

| | Wow.....What a lovely day you had. lol. That naughty pre-dude needs to have soap shoved in his mouth. I think it's dangerous when teenagers ask for donations by the side of the road too. This is common sense though. Technically, homeless people aren't allowed to do it, so why would teenagers be allowed to do it? Any weirdo can kidnap a kid by shoving them into his car at any time. You just can't approach people freely anymore in today's society. Too many weirdos.... | | | | | | |

| | Yep, weirdos are all over the place. And the fact that their PARENTS permit this rather than pay for their extracuricullar activities pisses me off all the more. I pay my taxes, and that includes school taxes. I don't need to be hassled further, thank you! | | | |

| | Look at it this way, at least you had great weather, some good beer, and a home and car to enjoy. That's more than what some people are getting these days with the economy. (Winter months have started in other areas, people can barely pay their bills and keep food on the table let alone buy alcohol, others are getting homes foreclosed/evicted from and their cars repo'd.) The only complaint you had was a couple of greedy and annoying Pre-teens asking for more money, I'd say you are having a beautiful day!!!! | | | | | | |

| | Quite a day! Bummer you let a teeny-booper ruin it! I pretty much paid my own way also in high school for exra-caricular activities and trips. But these days there are always fund-raisers for schools. And these teeny-boopers took their lesson from the fire-fighters taking over the major intersections on Labor Day for the MDA marathon. We set our own example. But, you are right. The kids should not have been out on a major arterial highway seeking donations! Another form of fundraising would had been more appropriate. | | | | | | |

| | I agree. A highway is for vehicles, not kids goofing off and insulting people who alreay gave to their "cause" that is their parents' responsibility, not MINE! | | | |

| | I'm impressed with what all you got done, rj. That level of achievement should supersede the ungrateful little free-loaders. It was the cheap b*stard comment that wudda made me blow my stack. I think I mighta come damn close to going back to the first group and getting my 1.75 back! And if they so much as blinked-why, I'd tell them to go ask Joe-Mouthy-down-the-road, why.. Typical case of one bad apple spoiling it for the rest of the gang. Say, rj...I'm curious about something. How many miles on average do you get outta a pair of tires on your bike? Fr last longer than a rear? Do they flat spot or do the edges wear uniformly with the centre by cornering? Are they 'special' harder-n-the-hubs-of-hell type that have a gazillion psi in 'em and no wider than an index fingernail?? | | | | | | |

| | I'll stoop for a penny as well, plunketear. Do you cycle? I used to cycle on those bikes with the tires no wider than a fingernail. I once hit a cigarette butt while riding and wiped out big time. | | | |

| | Plunk, I guess I must have gotten 3,000 miles outta tire execpt when Igot into some burrs. I had to replace my rear, once. I have my bike checked regularly, and I believe what I'm told (whether I should or not), and I let my bike servicer control the situation. Being gullible, I've probably had my tires changed more than I really need to. | | | |

| | As I was reading this I wondered if you can even be sure that this 'begging' was even really for the hockey. I wonder. I agree. I never had to beg EXCEPT once when I wanted to go see Alice's Restaurant and I pan handled for the money. That is the only time I ever begged for money for anything. | | | | | | |
