Do you know of any way to keep dogs from knocking over trashcans and getting in   

I would try spraying the bottoms of the trash cans with something that smells bad to the dogs, like bleach. I can't see where it would hurt them, because it is the smell that should keep them away. Too bad you can't buy spray bottles with 'veterinarian' smell (like the 'new car' sprays you can get). because anything that smells like the vet should certainly keep dogs away. Be careful not to use something like ammonia because that could actually attract them.

I'd call and ask your local vet before putting anything out...you don't want to kill the dog or make it sick. As for keeping them from being knocked over, the only remedy I've ever seen is ppl will build a basic wood box for the cans to sit inside of. It does work but takes a little work to do.

well i thought you were talking indoors and i had some tips but outdoors nope.. i have the same prob with stupid kids and cars hitting mine and it drives me nuts!

the only way i solved my "other people's dog" problem was to get a garbage keeper-
you can buy them at home depot,they're made by rubbermaid,and just anchor it down(if you have room for one).
i called and called and called animal control about loose dogs and they don't care.

i'd really rather not use chemicals either.

I have heard ammonia, but you have to spray arround the outside and inside of the cans in order for it to work. I dont have that problem, but thats what I have always heard.
