 Are you pro or anti gay marriage? And why? Why do I hear so often that gay marriage would somehow lessen the meaning of a heterosexual marriage? How does two men, or women, getting married and paying their mortgage together and living their lives together make any difference whatsoever in the lives of a married straight couple?

 sid556 (10684) | 12 months ago |  Marriage is also equally a non-religious institite. When one gets married inside the church, they also must get a legal license from the state. When one that gets married within the church gets a legal divorce, that divorce is not recognized in the church. There is a separate process to go through in the church to get yet another divorce. It is largly a religious issue. Of that I will certainly agree. That is because the church and it's followers take it upon themselves to make it their business and sadly our government allows them to get away with it! It should not be up to society of which many of them belong to churches that deem it right to protest and go against these things.

Which is more "degrading" - a lesbian couple who have been together for 60+ years or all of the celebrity marriages that last weeks or months (or ELEVEN HOURS, Ms. Spears) and end in messy, angry, childish divorces plastered all over the covers of supermarket tabloids?
Marriage, legally speaking, is a contract between two people. Being married, legally speaking, gives two people access to one another's lives on a legal level. Not being married, legally speaking, denies people that access. I have a huge diatribe about Jim and John and John's car accident and Jim wanting to take John off of life support but since they aren't married, John's emotional mother, unwilling to let go of her "little boy," makes the decision instead....but I'll leave that for another time.
The point is that when it comes down to it, who can be allowed to marry, at least in the US, is a legal question and should not be decided with religious bias, whichever religion that might be.
