Which is the oldest thing in your house? |
|
I developed an interest in antiques after writing around 50 articles on antique furniture for a client. After completing the fiftieth article and breathing a sigh of relief, I wondered about my own house. "Which is the oldest thing here?" I asked my Mom, and she said, "I am the oldest thing."
"Well, you are a human being," I replied. "Not a thing!"
Come to think of it, I don't have anything that is really old. We sold everything when we shifted house, and everything here is brand new. I felt a bit disappointed when I realized that. Isn't it charming to have something really old in your house that has been cherished for years and years and years? Something that seems to have a soul and can tell stories of what happened years ago?
Does this remind you of something really old that you own?
Cheers and happy Mylotting

positiveminded1977 (4517) | 1 year ago | heehhe LOL! That's interesting...I wish my birth certificate was that old, but it isn't. I lost my antique one and had to get a new one recently. But that certificate for best handwriting that I got when I was nine...yup, that is really old. LOL! I never thought of certificates. Thanks for the lovely response.

| 6. SAdave1 (60) | 1 year ago | I love old things, just to look at them, think about where they have been, who may have used them in the past. I have some really old trinkets of my Mom's, some old photos and books.
They are probably not worth that much, but I treasure them. The sad thing is that someone will probably just throw them away one day, when I am no longer around.

10. overwings (3639) | 1 year ago | I think the oldest thing in my house it's me. I was looking around and I don't think there is anything older than the building itself that it is around 25 years old. I've been moving a few times in the last years so I've been keeping only the most essential things with me and among them there is nothing really old. I left all the old things at my parents place. There the oldest thing might be a couple of silver coins from the 1870s. I have as well a few fossils which are a few million years old. In my house we never had a "grandma's old silver spoons collection"

Iconoclast1 (256) | 1 year ago | My bedroom set used to belong to my grandmother. She bought it in 1930. I used to have a chest of drawers from the early '20s, but it was destroyed when the garage flooded. But I got $1,000 from homeowners insurance for it so that was alright. I had no idea that it was worth that much until after the flood. Interestingly enough I had picked it out of someone's trash about 13 years ago. Also I have an amethyst geode that is millions of years old.
