I am going back to work after almost 2 1/2 years at home with my son. I have my first interview coming up soon. I am nervous because it's been so long. Can anyone offer me tips or encouragement to help me not be so nervous? Thanks

Wow! congratulations on securing an interview:) I am also in the process of looking for a job (i have been a freelancer for a while and plan to go back to the work force) and am a bit nervous on interviews! I think the best tip i can offer to avoid being nervous is to be as honest as possible. also try to keep answers short and direct. I notice that i tend to ramble when nervous so i make a conscious effort to keep it as short as possible to avoid sounding weird! haha:) I also wear comfortable but presentable clothes. good luck to you and hope you get the job:)

dont be nervous about your interview you will be fine if you are confident about yourself just try and be yourself be your normal self and dont take it as an interview just think as if you are going to meet a few people who are want to know about you and your going in there them to show how good you are and how good you can prove to there organisation just be confident about yourself and you will be able to do it. Hi,
Be yourself.
Remember it is not the only job out there.

By thinking this way, I am not as nervous.

I give it my best and if I don't get the job, I don't.
And when I do get the job, Great!

Think of it this way, if you don't get the job, it means
there is something better waiting out there for you.

Take care, Success.

well, i can only emphasis what kate said b4, but i like to add this one tip, or more of an advice really...
if the interview is in the morning, eat a light breakfast, dont go on "i`m too nervous i cant keep food down", that`ll only increase you anxiety, same goes for lunch too, also you`ll go early like 10 min ahead of the time, to keep it safe, i know you will, human nature, so the second you are presented to the secretary office ask where the facilities are, and just go like you`ve never gone b4, it`ll make you feel more relaxed, and if you wanna hurl, do that too, helps too
my final tip is, get a juice pack, not a big one, and drink it when you`re one block away from the place....
that`s it, hope these tips works for you as they did many b4
and, best of luck...

Congratulations on the interview. The employment market is really tough right now, so kudos to you.

I would suggest smiling as much as possible. And I wouldn't be too quick to respond to answers, don't take forever either, just manage to pause a little bit.

You also might go online, and practice some interview questions. That way you'll be prepared with answers for the most commonly ask questions.

And if they ask you which animal you are more like, a dog, a cat, a lion, or a dolphin, the correct answer is dolphin. I found that out through management.

Sure Marcia, just be yourself, that's what employers are looking for. If you want some tips I can give you a few that will help.
1. Give yourself plenty of time the morning of the interview, being rushed will put you out of sorts.
2. Know that you have all the confidence in the world and you're just going to give them a taste of what you can do.
3. Don't show them your cape or they will want you to be Superwoman, leave some mystery for creativity.
4. Wash your hands with warm water a few minutes before you shake hands with the powers that be, a warm handshake is inviting.
5. If those don't help, do what I do. Tell them that you'd think it would be in the best interest of the company to hire you today and any applications they have on hand can be tossed. They won't need to interview anybody else. Good luck!

Take deep breaths before the actual interview. Read something about the company you're applying too. Knowing a little background of the company will lessen your anxiety. Don't sit on the edge of the chair and tap your fingers, These show nervousness. Look directly at the interviewer. Smile. Don't answer with unsure phrases like "I'll try", "Maybe" "Perhaps" . This indicates lack of self confidence. You can say " Yes, I certainly will." or " I can". Memorize what you wrote in your resume'; it wouldn't look good if you look at it every happytime a question is asked. Sell yourself, don't under rate yourself. On the other hand, don't brag. Let the interviewer ask the proper question before telling her all your sterling accomplishments. and lastly, enjoy yourself, the worst thing that could happen is that you won't get hired. BUT still it's not the END of the world. Cheer up and be positive. Psyche yourself everyday that you'll get the job. Good luck. thumbupthumbup
