Sociologists from Florida who are studying old-fashioned pirates who sailed the oceans in the 17th and 18th centuries (not the modern, movie kind) say that pirates were pioneers when it came to exploring new territory and meeting the native peoples they found there.

Researcher Jason Acosta says, "Hollywood really has given pirates a bum rap with its image of bloodthirsty, one-eyed, peg-legged men who bury treasure and force people to walk the plank. We owe them a little more respect." He ought to know, since one of his ancestors was a pirate who fought for the United States in the Battle of New Orleans. He compared pirate charters with the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution and was amazed by the similarities.

Like the American revolutionaries, pirates developed three branches of government with checks and balances. The ship captain was elected, just as the US president; the pirate assembly was comparable to Congress; and the quartermaster resembled a judge in settling shipmate disputes and preventing the captain from overstepping his authority.

When public schools moved to the Western states, many young boys defected to Indian tribes, rather than attend classes. The same thing happened with pirates—many ordinary sailors defected to pirate ships because the pay and food were better. All crew members were allowed to vote, ship charters had to be signed by every man on board, and anyone who lost an eye or a leg was financially compensated. Acosta says, "It's no wonder that many sailors seized the opportunity to jump ship and search for a better way of life, namely piracy, which offered better food, shorter work shifts and the power of the crew in decision-making."

Cowboy movies usually depict an all white world, but in reality, many cowboys were black, since they were newly- freed slaves doing the kind of work that people who have just entered the economic world always do. There were black pirates as well. Indians and blacks who enslaved by the Spanish in the Caribbean gave pirates inside information on where to dock their ships and find supplies, Acosta says. Slaves fleeing plantations were welcomed on pirate ships, where they shared an equal voice with white sailors.

Acosta says that the legends about buried pirate treasure are just that: a myth, because pirates SPENT their money, they didn't bury it. By selling stolen silks, satins, spices and other merchandise in ports and spending their cash in the colonies, pirates actually created an economic boom, helping struggling settlements and making cities such as Port Royale in Jamaica and Charleston, S.C., important economic centers. Acosta says, "They didn’t bury their treasure, they spent it, helping colonies survive that couldn't get the money and supplies they needed from Europe."

Now Ive never known this about pirates, anyone else know any of this?

I didnt know everyone could vote and all that, or that if someone lost an eye or leg they would be compensated. Very interesting.

Their form of government is a surprise to me, but what really struck me was the injury compensation. If you sailed with the British navy, or fought with its army, you got no compensation for any injury, and in fact got demobbed and sent back home with nothing but what you'd managed to plunder (and keep) along the way.

You were also subject to flogging more or less at the whim of senior officers. The navy was fractionally better than the army, at least you had the possibility of genuine promotion from the ranks, but I can see why common sailors would defect.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing it.

Yeah it was a surprise to me too. Hell I knew everything sucked back then lol, and didnt get much for being hurt or anything, I didnt know they would compensate at all, hell I didnt even know they knew the word, though was probably called something else. Yeah in the army it was mostly the rich who got promoted and everyone else just stayed the same rank all the way thru.

For an interesting background on the British army, to say nothing of a cracking good tale, you could read the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe series of books. You may possibly have seen the TV series based on it, starring Sean Bean. The books and the show are about on a par for quality and enjoyment, which is unusual.

I knew that Hollywood did their own thing with the image of pirates but I didn't know the details and they're a little shocking. How fascinating that they were this functional crew that worked hard together and were beneficial for the colonies. This new image is so much more impressive than the Hollywood version.

myLot reputation of 64/100. darkjedi (4347)  4 years ago

Yeah I knew hollywood had too, but not how much they had. Hell if someone went back in time probably wouldnt have even recognized a real pirate lol.

myLot reputation of 64/100. darkjedi (4347)  4 years ago

Sounds like the basis of the American government was taken from the policies on pirate ships. There was something else I wanted to say, but ...

Well - guess who's response got deleted. That response threw me off & made me forget what I wanted to say, if I didn't already say that.

myLot reputation of 64/100. darkjedi (4347)  4 years ago

Yeah it does sound like it huh lol. I didnt even let that persons comment bother me one way or the other lol. Since I highly doubt real admin would actually post something somewhere lol.

myLot reputation of 94/100. sharra1 (3429)   ranked 81 out of 32,943 in life  4 years ago

That was a very strange profile and I do not believe it has anything to do with real admin. I do not think they would do that.

myLot reputation of 83/100. KrazyKlingon (3288)   ranked 3,467 out of 32,943 in life  4 years ago

It apparently wasn't real. That suspicious character started a discussion like the one Crash did probably back around February of 2008, except without a prize for BR. Not sure if anyone saw it before it went bye-bye, but I left comments under several people's responses of "Test comment for (that guy) to delete." I even pointed out a guideline violation that I caught, saying a REAL moderator or admin would not have done that. Oh - yeah - at the same time, someone else who was skeptical got his response in like maybe 10 seconds before me, & he & I joked around a bit there.

myLot reputation of 64/100. darkjedi (4347)  4 years ago

Naw it wasnt real lol, I know who it was lol.

It sounds very interesting. I am not at all surprised that the movies showed a pack of lies as they were showing the mainstream view not reality. They did not want people breaking away from the mainstream and finding a better life somewhere else.

It resembles ideas that I have seen in history when the people have tried to set up their own governments. I remember one such group in 17 century England settled down on the common which they believed was land available to all and they tried to set up a way of farming it that let everyone live in common.

At the time they had no word to describe what they were doing and when they tried to explain it to other people they had no words to describe their ideas. As a modern day person I could clearly see a commune and I could give it a name because the words were invented in the 19th century but this was 2 centuries before the word was invented.

Needless to say it did not last as the landowners did not want their workers working for themselves and thinking for themselves so the people were driven off and their farms destroyed.

myLot reputation of 64/100. darkjedi (4347)  4 years ago

That is cool, I didnt know anyone tried to make a commune back then. Of course not like they would let that be known at all lol. Im surprised they just didnt kill the people so their new ideas wouldnt spread.

myLot reputation of 94/100. sharra1 (3429)   ranked 81 out of 32,943 in life  4 years ago

Yes well when I read about it I said oh they were building a commune and my lecturer said no because that word did not exist back then. They had no words for what they were doing they just thought that if everyone pooled all their stuff and shared it then they would all be better off. Tricky thing studying history is that you have to try and see it as they saw it.

I am pretty sure that this was one of the groups that came out of the English Civil War when Cromwell and his puritans took over and I think the group were ex soldiers who decided they would be better off working as a group. They were right. Their problem was that common land did not belong to the commoners. It was land that the lords allowed the commoners to use by some old law and later was taken back when the land was fenced, called the enclosure period.

This was a fascinating time in history with many religious sects starting up and new ideas forming. I loved studying the history of ideas. It is fascinating to see people coming up with ideas for which there is no language and trying to explain it to others. You see new words forming.

Pirates had to have democracy.
Pirates had to because without a proper channel there will be chaos for succession.
This was a clever way to rule even if one grows world.
Otherwise after someone's strength fails it is difficult to retain power. so they had to devise a way of politics.
