Mental Note: Stay the Hell Out of Brighton City, Michigan!   email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239) 4 years ago

There is a new law in Brighton City, Michigan making it illegal to be annoying in public. Violators will be ticketed and fined. My question is, who is the judge of what is annoying? Considering how thin-skinned many in our society have become, they will not have enough paper to write all these tickets on, since anyone can become annoyed over anything for any reason. Here is the news story about it, please tell me what you think:

Michigan city bans being annoying in public
Friday, December 19, 2008

(12-19) 17:38 PST Brighton, Mich. (AP) --

Ticking someone off could get you a ticket in one Michigan city. The Brighton City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance allowing police in the Livingston County community to ticket and fine anyone who is annoying in public "by word of mouth, sign or motions."

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the measure is modeled on a similar ordinance in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak.

A city attorney says there could be situations where the measure would violate freedom of speech, but that those cases will be reviewed by the city.

The ban takes effect Jan. 2.

Great topic!
I'm afraid that would be everyone,we all are annoying at some pointlol
The only thing I don't understand-what's so fun about being annoying alone?shocked

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239)  4 years ago

Everyone would be subject to fines, since the person first charged with being annoying will be annoyed with the ticket giver and the person who reported them for being annoying!

myLot reputation of 93/100. mommyboo (4304)   ranked 57 out of 682 in ranting about things which annoy me  4 years ago

Yeah, I don't see how they would deal with this situation. Overly pc is right, if the annoying person claimed the ticket writer was annoying, then you have the ticket writer in trouble. Bystanders can also claim they were annoyed by having to see the whole thing go down.

myLot reputation of 96/100. AnakSuNamun (856)   ranked 603 out of 682 in ranting about things which annoy me  4 years ago

There's a whole lot of people that are permanently annoyedangry

Everyone is in the market for a little money. I can see where this law would be much more costly to enforce then the fines produced by it would offset. Happy New Year

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239)  4 years ago

I suspect the person forced to issue the tickets would also be fined since getting a ticket is pretty danged annoying!

That law annoys me so I want the lawmaker to have a ticket for annoying me with his nonsense.

Excellent idea. I don't accept solicitors, at my door or in my face as I'm walking around in public. They are public annoyances and definitely should be subject to fines. Yeah, I'm in a mean mood today.

I actually like this law if it would include and ticket religious 'door to door' salesmen thumbup Not that I want overpriced magazines from a college kid learning how to speak better in public with strangers, but at least a magazine wouldn't annoy me IF I bought it.

On second thought....maybe it's not such a bad idea...lol

myLot reputation of 93/100. mommyboo (4304)   ranked 57 out of 682 in ranting about things which annoy me  4 years ago

Yeah, it would help to threaten your kids with the potential of arrest if they were about to make public nuisances of themselves. Since they don't listen to parents, perhaps that threat would help them learn to control their public behavior.

Then I wouldn't have the oh-so-fun memory of my 13 year old daughter dragging my 12 year old son screaming and kicking across the carpet of the movie theater lobby because he wanted to be in the arcade and we had asked them to meet us at a bench by the doors....Granted between the two of them, my daughter is a bully and he can't back down either - now he's bigger than she is. I love to tease them about this incident because it is pretty funny now. I was mortified when it happened. I think my hubby and I were wishing a hole would open up and swallow them, the kids look EXACTLY like him and nobody would guess they didn't belong to him.

I'm gonna have to make a trip back to Michigan and see what happens. whistle Some say I am rather annoying so I wonder just how many tickets I can accumulate. Wait how much is each ticket/ Maybe it isn't such a good idea. lol

You are so right about so many being thin skinned. Then add to that the ones who misunderstand something or only hear what they want to hear. There will not be enough paper anywhere to write all those tickets.

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239)  4 years ago

The easily offended are offended by even the most non-offensive things. What's next, giving legal authority to the "fashion police"?

myLot reputation of 86/100. razcal2267 (9670)  4 years ago

If that happens I will for sure become an agoraphobic

myLot reputation of 93/100. mommyboo (4304)   ranked 57 out of 682 in ranting about things which annoy me  4 years ago

Fashion police? OMG I can't stand 'what not to wear'. Those two (Stacy and Clinton) make people wear the worst crap ever. Besides, most of us don't have the plastic to go shop at Tiffanys and Saks and wherever else overpriced boutique they make those poor people go to. I believe in makeovers at some point, but something reasonable where you buy a few new things that can be worn 10 ways and get a new haircut or something, not 5K! I wouldn't be spending 5K on CLOTHES that's for sure. Maybe in 10 years lol.

myLot reputation of 83/100. sirensanssmile (2784)   ranked 476 out of 682 in ranting about things which annoy me  4 years ago

I will go with Razcal to Michigan to be annoying in the street and see how many ticket I can get. We can have a competition to see who gets more. I will just walk around singing because I can not sing and it must be annoying to others to hear this very bad voice.

What the hell kind of stupid fascist crap is this? Talk about your enormous civil suit just waiting to happen.

People who think government is the answer need to look at stories like this and realize government is actually the problem.

fking idiots.

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239)  4 years ago

A civil suit would be annoying to the people who created this stupid law, so the filers of the civil suit would likely be subject to ticketing and fines. Of course, the people who created the law and the law itself could be deemed "annoying" so there would be a never ending cycle of tickets issued, and the ticket writer would be cited as well, since getting a ticket is annoying in itself! Uh-oh, I've made myself dizzy...

The whole idea is quite frankly - annoying - and everybody involved who ever WENT for this thing or had a hand in getting it passed and even CONSIDERED are annoying, and they all need to be ticketed pronto and I WANT THE MONEY.

I promise not to do anything highly annoying with the money.

myLot reputation of 88/100. CurlyRed (3467)  4 years ago

HAHA! I would never really go topless, but it is legal. When the law came in, the young guys were all excited, only to end up seeing old women wandering around without their shirts blink

But, I DO have the choice

lol Michigan has several strange laws. One of the cities there also made it illegal for your pants to be below the waist. It all seems really silly considering a lot of cities in Michigan are in a depression.

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239)  4 years ago

They can't afford belts I guess. The no baggy pants rule is in effect in a lot of cities because it is popular for people into hip hop to wear their pants below their butts with their underwear showing. Some people do not like to see young men walking around with their pants down. I think they should let them wear their pants around their knees, as there have been many reports of young men committing crimes and trying to run from police only to fall on their faces and be arrested after tripping over their low pants! LOL It's TRUE!

myLot reputation of 93/100. mommyboo (4304)   ranked 57 out of 682 in ranting about things which annoy me  4 years ago

You know, I really wish that young people could not be allowed to wear pants that hang below their butts, because I am really sick of seeing boxers and underwear and once in awhile someone's actual butt. This isn't to say I have a problem with low rise jeans, I don't, but I WEAR ONES THAT FIT. It takes all my powers of self control not to want to yank all the pants I see that are hanging.... DOWN.... even my kids do it and I am constantly warring with myself over it. Of course, to be equal opportunity here, I also wish that old people could not wear those polyester suits or pants up to their armpits with shirts TUCKED in, housecoats in public, slippers, and curlers. I am fortunately somewhere in the middle, I dress relatively young but not like I'm actually 17.

I put up with my daughter because she's 19 but I battled it my own way by buying my son pants with a smaller waist knowing they won't hang off his butt like his old ones.

On top of all the frivolous laws suits lay people clutter up the courts with now we have the lawmakers making frivolous laws. I imagine is just another ploy for these cities to fine everyone and fill their coffers (and perhaps there own pockets) with the citizens hard earned money.

myLot reputation of 48/100. MSV1313 (2239)  4 years ago

The people who MADE the law should be issued tickets since the law itself seems like it will be pretty danged annoying!

Do the police have to hear or can you just call and report someone as annoying?
Can you give tickets to owners of dogs that won't stop barking day or night and are ANNOYING me? Or is it just people.
But every time a law is broken they can add an extra charge for being annoying.
What do I think?
I think that city will turn very dull very quickly.
Every one will be afraid to do anything for fear of annoying anyone and having to pay for being themselves.
But they picked a good time to have the law go into effect. Winter in Michigan. No one could move if they wanted to and come spring given the economy they couldn't even sell their house to get away from the insanity.
