Artists similar to Morrissey  

I was introduced by Death Cab for Cutie's cover of "This Charming Man." I didn't realize it was a cover at first, and became a hug fan of Morrissey and The Smiths after that.

With a beautiful barotone voice (often punctuated by a high falsetto) and thoughtful lyrics, very British, very 80s, very awesome; Morrissey's somewhat notorious for his divisive (and loud) opinions.

I'm still not sure what type of music are they. Are they rock? What type of rock?

They were part of the New Wave scene in the 80's, at around the same time that U2 was just a little-known band out of Ireland. As such, The Smiths are often classified as New Wave/New Romantics/Indie Rock. In the late 80s, Morissey and guitarist Johnny Marr had a falling out, which led to the demise of The Smiths. If you've never heard of The Smiths, you're missing out on something, because they're considered to be one of the most seminal bands to come out of Manchester, England.

His older albums were great, but I really liked "You Are the Quarry." My all-time favorites include "Bigmouth Strikes Again," "I Like You," "Asleep," and "Panic". (I also melt every time I hear "Let Me Kiss You").
