Have we ever not been about looking after our own?

The only way I think we will ever truly be one people is if we are all collectively invaded and so all have a common foe.

You guys are making very good points... So, Mr_mlk, when you speak of a collective invasion...are you referring to your county or the world-at-large. If you are speaking of Earth as a whole, who would the invaders be? I have some far out ideas and they aren't pretty scenarios...

Perhaps Mathss is right in asking just who are the idiots, because there is supposed to be strength in numbers. And as much as I try to believe that the number of compassionate, law abiding individuals far outweighs the troublemakers, such good-minded people tend to bury their heads in the sand and wait for someone else to come and rescue them, to make the first move. In this way, decent folk seem rather idiotic to not do something. Why are we all so afraid of dying for the betterment of our families and countrymen? Or is more that we don't want to give our lives to something that seems will never beresolved (like Iraq and Afghanistan)?
