My mom used to tell us that we should not spend anything on new year's day. She has a superstious belief that you will always be spending for the rest fo the year if you start spending on the new year. You should keep your money instead. What do you think? Do you believe in this? Did you buy something on new year's day?

I'm not a superstitious person, and neither are most of the people who I know. Thus, I don't see anything wrong with buying anyone a present on new year's day. In my country it is customary to give people Christmas presents, but not presents on New Year's Day.

I have read that we actually adapted this belief from the chinese. They always have a lot of beliefs when it comes to spending money. I think there's nothing wrong with buying a present but it is also always wise not to spend on the new year. We could always buy it on after christmas sale when prices have lowered a little bit. Sometimes they do sound funny not to be spending but in this very hard times I think it is wise not to.

I don't believe in that superstition. When I was a kid though, my great-grandmother used to ran after us with her cane because the first thing we'd do on new year's day was spend our money on the village cornerstore - she'd be screaming it's bad luck to spend money on that very day. happy

I just could imagin what your great grandma did. It had a funny imagination about it. Good thing you did not feel the trauma on spending on new year's eve. The more I think that it becomes a bad luck when shouts it to us. Oh well, you know the old people, they always love to follow superstitious and wanted the next generation to follow it without question. And the more we love to question these beliefs.;-)

I think it's silly. It's just another day. I think spending is like eating healthy. It's got to do with the lifestyle that you abide by every day, not just at any particular time. It's something you should strive to do well all the time, not just on the first day of the year. If you discipline yourself, you shouldn't have to use superstition.

Yes, I agree with you. Discipline with oneself when to purchasing stuff no matter what day is really important. My husband always tell me to buy things if it is necessary, if not I should not buy it. He is a very wise spender and needs no superstitions to abide.
