I've Been Adopted! |
| |
| It looks like I’ve been adopted. I guess I’m a daddy! At the trail where I bike, I spotted a young cat two days ago. It was friendly enough; wasn’t scared of me, so yesterday I took a can of tuna to feed it. It dug into it like crazy, first lapping up the liquid at the top of the can, then proceeded to eat every last bit of white albacore tuna the can held. After it finished, it (I did not invade its privacy to see whether it was a boy cat or girl cat) cleaned itself off, peed, pooped, scratched, apparently to cover the poop, then returned to me for some affection. This is a really cute cat. Today, before I went for my bike ride, I packed some dry dog food from Lady’s stash into a bag and tossed it into my car. I got to table number one (one of two tables at the trailhead where I bike), and parked my car. There, sitting on one of the benches at table number one, was the cat. This was where I left it yesterday with a belly full of tuna. As I approached the table with the dog food, I thought the cat might run away, but it didn’t. I poured the contents of the bag on the wooden table and the cat began eating like there was no tomorrow. I left it in mid-meal to proceed on my ride. I returned a bit more than an hour later and I spotted the cat following a couple (whom I later learned were Matt and Alicia). I put my bike on its rack and proceeded with a can of Natural Light and my newspaper, to table number one. The cat followed me. About 15 minutes later, Matt and Alicia returned. They had eight cans of cat food and a box. They planned to feed the cat, then place it in the box and take it to the local Humane Society, a no-kill society. We chatted briefly as the cat relished the moment: CAT FOOD! No stinkin’ DOG FOOD! After the cat was nearly finished with its din-din, Matt picked it up, put it in the box and covered it with a blanket of sorts, fully intending to take it to the Humane Society. The cat had different plans. It leapt out of the box, ran about 30 feet north and sat there grooming itself. I said to Matt, “Well, I guess this cat has plans of its own.” We all laughed as I told the couple that the cat apparently didn’t want to go to the Humane Society. I added that I would be back tomorrow to feed it. With that, Matt went to his car and returned with seven cans of cat food. I vowed to feed the cat at least one can tomorrow. I thanked them for their kindness and I told them that I hoped they’d win the Florida Lottery for being so kind. “Me too,” piped in Alicia. They left the trailhead and I coerced the cat to come back to me and finish the can of food, which it did. I assured it that I had no ulterior motives; that I was not trying to capture it and take it to the Humane Society; that I respected its freedom as much as I respect my own. The cat seemed to be convinced. It wrapped itself around my leg, purring all the way. I stopped in the Men’s room to relieve myself and I was surprised when I opened the door to find a “watchcat” waiting for me. We ambled to my car. I said “Good night, cat.” The cat did not respond, but I get the feeling that it knows that I’ll be back tomorrow (which I will) to feed it once again. A lost cat? An abandoned cat? I don’t know. But one thing is sure: This dude or dudette is appreciative for the kindness it’s received. I fully expect to find it sitting at table number one tomorrow when I get there. Have you ever made friends with a “stranger” animal? If so, how’d it turn out? Did you remain friends or did circumstances change to such an extent that you were unable to continue the “friendship”? Memo to self: I’m a dog lover: I find cats too independent, but this one strikes me differently … I like this dude … or dudette. © 2009 RJScott | | | | | |

| | I'm so glad you are taking care of this cat. I love cats. You should take this cat home with you. Some cats are not that independent. Being independent can be a good thing with an animal. My cat can take care of herself for a few days if I'm out of town. I leave her with plenty of water, food and a clean litter box. If I'm going to be gone for several days I have someone to check on her if I don't take her with me. Give this cat a chance at your house. Who knows you may turn into a cat lover. | | | | | | |

| | I can't very well take the cat home with me. My home isn't mine. It belongs to my wire haired fox terrier, Foxy Lady (my avatar). I don't things would set too well with her if I appeared to change my affections from her to a cat that I've known less than a week. Goodness! Lady might kick me OUT! Then I'd be among the ranks of the homeless ... where I found the cat. | | | |

| | Thanks Myk. The cat was there, just where I left HIM yesterday. As he has been, he was looking for a handout ... panhandling, you might say, a lesson learned well from his previous temporary owners, Tim and "Mom." | | | |

| | That is nice that this cat has made friends with you. I think it is sad when people dump pets. I have always looked after my animals even when they hated me. I had a rescued cat once who hated all humans but she lived with me for 16 years. I like cats but they are too independent for me. I would be worrying about the cat while he was off doing his thing. Still if one adopted me I would give him a home and hope our dog learned to live with him. | | | |

| | I once in my mid 20s met a lovely friendly black and white cat at the cemetery, named him Felix and brought him some cat food the next day. He loved that food and so from then on I was there often feeding him. I would have liked to adopt him but I lived with my mom back then who disliked cats and so no way of sneaking Felix in. Unfortunately the owner of Felix detected that I was feeding him, he saw it one day and exclaimed, aha thats why Max doesnt touch any food back home. I never saw that cat again, and was so sad to have lost contact with my furry friend. | | | | | | |

| | Too bad Felix couldn't have become a two-owner pet. In these days of financial crises, it would be be reassuring to know that SOMEBODY would be there to feed you! | | | |

| | I tried once, to comfort a beautiful siberian husky during her first labor and delivery. I sat by her side while she panted and huffed. I touched her head gently to reassure her. I touched the back of her neck to do a real pet and that is when she bit me. Not just a little nip, but a real hunk of my wrist. I had to yell and yell to get someone to come pry her teeth out of my arm. Hospital, nerve damage, etc. So I'm a bit hesitant to assist. And let me tell ya, every single time I saw that dog after she bit me, she licked her lips and lunged with all her might to get another bite of me. I was the only person she ever bit and the only person she continued to try to bite. I also had a tendancy to be attacked and humped by dogs as a small child. My mom had to carry me past some animals so they couldn't get to me. Very odd. I also got bitten on the boob by a pet raccoon. I don't have very good luck with animals and when I see one I tend to run the other way. But I commend those of you that have good luck and compassion. That cat will be very happy I'm sure due to you, alicia, and matt's good will towards animals! | | | | | | |

| | That is really cool RJ. Im glad he or she was able to find a loving human to feed it. Im glad you didnt let them take her to the humane society too, even if it is a no kill shelter. Probably wouldnt be as happy there. So have you thought of a name yet? Yes I have made friends with strange animals, Ive only met one animal that I couldnt make friends with, and that was one of the 6 cats my ex roommate had, one of them didnt like me from the start and there was no changing her mind lol. Growing up, ive made friends out of dogs that would growl and snap at other people but I would be patient and talk to them and they would end up wanting me to pet them and lick me. Hell when I had a paper route there was one guy who had pit bulls, they didnt like anyone, and it took a couple of years but I eventually got them to let me pet them. With how friendly he is, he was probably abandoned, some idiot who got a cute little kitten and when it grew up didnt want it anymore. | | | | | | |

| | Yep, I thought of a name, Jedi: Smokey, because of HIS color. Isn't it great how ANIMALS can react with affection (or not)? People judge without rhyme or reason. At least animals are fair: They love or hate people WITH cause. | | | |

Dude Dudette likes you and knows you aren't putting any bounderies on it, so i hope its still there tomorrow and no one else takes it away..Yes they are independent, but thats when they want to be as you see it waited for you at the mens room..From the way it ate i wonder if you were the first to feed it in awhile cause it acted like it was very hungry..may be even starving..well to it, it may have been.. Hope you have a follow up story.. huggs and meowwwss | | | | | | |

| | Follow-up for Rosie: I finished my bike ride first, Rosie, avoiding tables number one and two ... and biked home, hopped in my car and drove up to the trailhead. Sure enough, there was that cat. It was almost 5PM and HE seemed to be saying, "'Lo chap, a bit late, aren't you, with my dinner?" We both walked to table number two (he was behind me) and I opened a can of cat food and he began eating it. I took some pictures (read on) and as he burped, without bothering to excuse himself, I walked back to my car. I still had to take Lady for a ride to still another park. As I drove off he seemed to be saying, "You WILL be back, WON'T you?" I will. | | | |

| | Oh, and yes. It was the same table as those whose names shall not be mentioned occupied. This apparently was HER cat, and apparently she CHOSE to abandon it when they moved ... onward and upward? I don't THINK so. | | | |

| | Great tail, rj. This is nature's pay back for ya, instead of the selfishness you have been a victim of in past in that park, you're on the receiving end of a gift! Any kitty that gives you that much attention, is a gift. It's your duty to just merely recognise it, haha. Call it Link, cuz you both have one. Of course if it's a female, ya might have to call it Linkette, haha Happy for you both. btw, there isn't a doubt in my mind the kitty will be under #1 tomorrow, cuz it already knows you're #1.. It's no fool.. | | | | | | |

| | Yo, Plunk! Good to see ya sir! I decided to call the cat Smokey, because of its color. See the image in my reply to Irish for a small montage of today's "feeding" ceremony. That dude (yep, it's a male) is really a COOL CAT! | | | |

| | Good for you! My brother got a kitten a few months ago at work-he works at a junior high as a custodian. Some workers found a kitten with its paw stuck in the garage door, and a secretary took it to the vet to be looked at. They needed a home for him, so they asked around if anyone wanted it, and my brother volunteered, even though he already had two cats at home. He's a bit rambunctious, and runs the two older cats ragged, but brother's glad he took him home. He named him Tony Soprano, lol. | | | | | | |
