My grandma has been away for more than ten years, and she couldn't do any knitting in my memory, but she used to do lots of delicious food for me,and I had an enjoyable childhood with her.

tattylashes (4295) | 1 year ago | i miss my nan so much, she raised me and i had best childhood ever, even growing as a teen into a woman and a mother i was very happy with her, she used to knit everything, if she could knit a house for me i am sure she would have done, but she did make my clothes when i was little, and she did the same when i had my sons, i still have stuff in my garage that she made, maybe i should dig them out and put them in a charity shop, or maybe save them for when i have another grandchild, it's times like this when i wish she was here, she was a sweet loving lady and i miss her laughter and her funny jokes....

| | 4. drannhh (7553) | 1 year ago | You will laugh, but I had to look up the word "nan" and so OK now that I know another name for grandmother, my nan crocheted and also taught me how when I was just a little one, but knitting I did have to learn on my own.

tattylashes (4295) | 1 year ago | oh i am sorry, i forgot that some people call their nannas gran or grandmother...i keep forgetting that...sorry....i used to crochet but never been able to knit, my nanna was the queen of the knitters here, she really should have made a business out of it because her work was outstanding and people used to order heaps of things from her all the time, i still have a box full of baby stuff in my garage that she made for my sons when they were born, they must be 20+ years old by now....

| | 5. moondancer (2948) | 1 year ago | Mine made many, many quilts. I and my aunt helped when she got them out and we were around. It is something I'll always remember of my time with her. I taught my mom to crochet and we both did a lot of that. I use to sew a lot. I now have the machine that use to be my mothers and grandmothers. I'm going to try to some sewing again. I don't crochet much since having arthritis. I'd love to though.

tattylashes (4295) | 1 year ago | this is one skill that i found hard to learn, so i used to make little berets and hats by crochet, that's all i could do, from what was meant to be a blanket always turned out to be a hat...lol...but i could not knit to save my life, it's funny though, through the years you hardly ever see anyone sitting there with their needles clicking away, each time i saw my nan, she would be there with smoke coming from hers, i am sure she was in a knitting marathon, she could make a sweater in a day, it was amazing....

| | 6. ellie333 (6793) | 1 year ago | Hi Tattylashes, Oh my nan loved to knit too and my brother and I would wear the results a lot of the time, she was really good with what she made and we would happily wear, I think tank tops were in fashion at the time so we had loads of those made for us. I don't knit, although I can, I tend to crochet but just blankets, nothing fancy. Huggles. Ellie:D

| | 7. mentalward (4339) | 1 year ago | Well, I don't have a 'nan' anymore. (We called her "Nanna") But MY needles still go clicking away! Well, not at the moment because of so many other things going on but I love to knit and crochet. If I had a daughter, she'd know how to do it, too. She might not care about doing it, but she'd know how.
If I ever have a granddaughter, and I'm still able, I'd love to teach her! I know that sounds awfully like stereotyping but, let's face it, not many guys even CARE about knitting, let alone want to try to do it!
But, when my mother's mother was alive, she knitted her fingers off! Okay, not literally, but I can remember her always having knitting (or crocheting) in her hands or nearby every time we'd visit. She did a lot of things like that. I have a lot of the things she made, too.
It seems like the more time goes by, the less we see anyone making anything by hand like this. It's easier to just go out and buy a sweater. Everyone wants it NOW! I'm speaking in general terms here... not everyone is like this.
There is a most noticeable decline in pride of workmanship. Everything these days seems to be produced on assembly lines... faster, faster, faster!
Not me. I like those 'hand-made with love and caring' things that you can't buy in any store unless they specialize in these types of things and there aren't many of them to be found.
One year, I made everyone a sweater... everyone (okay, not 'everyone', just family and friends, lol)! I loved doing it, too. They loved receiving them or, at least, they did a very good job of pretending to love them.
I guess I'll be "Nan" one day. I'd love for my grandchildren to remember me with my knitting needles or crochet hook and yarn in my hands.

tattylashes (4295) | 1 year ago | well i am a nan but not a knitter...lol...one day you'll have grandkids mental....but i hardly ever see or hear about anyone knitting any more, i think the new technology out today takes away the old fashioned values that out grandparents had back then, she did try and teach me but my mind wouldn't absorb, it seemed so complicated, so i took to crocheting but i wasn't good at that either....lol....

I didn't know my nan as she passed long before I was born, but I do remeber my auty and my mum used to knit all the time and we all had jumpers each all different colours and my olers sisteres never wanted to wear them and put them at the back of their wardrobe, but I had to wear mine. Love and hugs.
