Burris Denied Senate Seat |

I think the only reason he was denied is because Blagojevich appointed him, and right now they will not accept anything he does, even though this could have been the best choice possible.
Unfortunately, right now Illinois is having severe political problems; I hope we get them sorted out soon, but being as it is Illinois, I ain't gonna hold my breath waiting.
Do you think Burris would have been a good choice if Blagojevich was not having problems?

1. jonesy123 (3254) | 1 year ago | Officially he was declined because of a technicality. Jesse White did not sign the appointment paperwork, only Blagojevich. Both signatures are required for the appointment to be valid. I watched Burris being interviewed yesterday. His answers were rude and at times uncalled for. At some point he questioned why the reporters made such a big deal out of this and his answer to the Blagojevich scandal around that senate he simply said something like "Scandal? What scandal? I don't know anything about a scandal." Just what we need sitting in the US senate, lol.
He is going to sue Jesse White to sign the papers and is contemplating other legal steps to force his way in even without the proper paperwork to back him up. He thinks the refusal to seat him is unconstitutional (mmh, wasn't he missing some signatures???). He claims he is there on behalf of the Illinois people and has been an appointed official for many years by the Illinois people. They put their trust in him...I must have missed somewhere where they voted him in to be senator, lol.
It'll be interesting how this is going to play out. He is amusing but way too much of a troublemaker (in a bad way).

myklj999 (7262) | 1 year ago | But why do you think Jesse White refused his signature? Do you think it is only because they will not accept anyone Blagojevich tries to put there, or are there other reasons?

jonesy123 (3254) | 1 year ago | I haven't heard about White's reasons for refusing the signature. I can only venture a guess that any appointment by Blagojevich especially to that particular Senate seat is simply suspect in terms of whether money or other favors switched hands. He might be waiting to see what the investigation into this matter shows. Might very well be a clean appointment. But politically it would be bad for White to simply sign off on this. He would be thrown into the same pot as Blagojevich. Nobody wants to be there right now;)

myklj999 (7262) | 1 year ago | Burris did do a good job here in Illinois at the office he was elected to previously. Whether that would make him a good Senator or not, I can't really say; however, he is one of the few politicians here in Illinois that has not been touched by scandal...yet.

irishidid (3062) | 1 year ago | I've heard he is squeaky clean, which would be a good thing and extremely rare in our government. If he's the best man for the job, gets his papers in order and all, then he should be seated. Not because of his race, but his credentials.

jonesy123 (3254) | 1 year ago | Burris was quoted on CNN as stating that he doesn't condone such talk. I doesn't 'run' on race and race doesn't matter to him. He supposedly said that he unfortunately can't stop his supporters from bringing it up but that he himself doesn't stand for it.
Personally, I wouldn't want people to question how much I paid for my seat, lol. I didn't like how he answered the questions yesterday to reporters. I think under the circumstances an election should be held. Maybe he thinks he can't win such an election, at least not without having kept the seat warm in the senate;)

4. lilwonders456 (1930) | 1 year ago | Well Burris is getting the heat because of who appointed him. The governor suppostively tried to sell the seat to the highest bidder so ANY choice he made was going to cause a big fuss. For the sake of the seat and the state the governor should have let someone else make the decision. Just so something like this did not happen. But he decided to be self centered and selfish and make the decision himself knowing what would happen to whoever he appointed. This whole mess could have been avoided.

5. Bd200789 (1969) | 1 year ago | I don't think it is right that he was denied his seat. Blagojevich is still the governor, and it was his job to make the appointment. Isn't denying him the seat illegal? Besides, they have all said Burris is qualified for the seat.

myklj999 (7262) | 1 year ago | Blagojevich is also charged with attempting to sell the seat for private gain (ie money, a political appointment, etc). Right now, Governor Rod shouldn't really have any power is what myself and most other people in Illinois think.

6. anniepa (9274) | 1 year ago | I really feel bad for Burris and for the people of Illinois. I'm not from Illinois and I admittedly never heard of Roland Burris until last week but from everything I've heard and read about him since then he's as clean as a whistle and probably would have been lauded as an excellent choice had it been made by some other than Blago or had it come before this scandal surrounding him. I think Blogojevich made a brilliant choice here, despite the scumbag he obviously is, by choosing someone with no baggage and an African American to boot! He knew there would be major resistance to seating anyone he appointed but he also knew that having made the choice he made it would only cause more tension and bring out the hated "race card", which is very sad. I hope the Senate comes up with a suitable compromise and bites the bullet and seats Burris. Nobody is going to think that means Blagojevich "got away with anything" other than what WAS within his legal rights, whether we like it or not! Annie

myklj999 (7262) | 1 year ago | I have to agree; Blagojevich made a brilliant strategic move by nominating Burris.
I await to see how this further plays out.

7. BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | That is a tough question to answer Mike.
The race issue was killed when it was found that the Il Secretary of State was pointed out as being black as well as is Burris.
Burris has a reputation as being a fine man. But Rod's problems have tainted to whole process to the point that I am thinking that the only way Il is going to get a junior senator to replace Obama, is through an actual election.
Anything less than that is going to be a problem for anyone owing to the governor's issues.

8. xfahctor (5549) | 1 year ago | The only thing legaly keeping Burris from being seated is that signature from the sec of state of illinois. everything else is legal. the governor has not been convicted or even indicted yet. He made a legal decision, it's all constitutionaly sound. burris should be seated. I would have loved to see an election take place, believe me, it could have meant one less democrat seat, but this is all with in constitutional guidlines and MUST be adheared to, Burris MUST be seated. and no....it's NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a race thing. I think its disgusting anyone went on national tv and made it so. shame.

9. Opal26 (10049) | 1 year ago | Hey myklj! Honestly, I really couldn't say. I don't know too much about Burris except what the media reported about him. The fact that he was stupid enough to hitch himself to someone like Blagojevich doesn't say a whole lot for his intelligence as far as I'm concerned! It just seemed to be a very desparate attempt to get himself into the Senate which he should have known would backfire! The whole thing is such a mess at this point. It just looks like a three ring circus! I don't know how they are going to straighten it out, but they sure need someone to step in and make the decision already! And as for that azzhole Blagojevich, he needs to be sitting in a prison cell for a long time!

10. us2owls (2035) | 1 year ago | The good job Burris did in Illinois when he was in office went down the tubes when he allowed himself to be nominated by Blagojevich for Barrack Obama's Senate seat. With all the things our Governor has done and been accused of to gain himself either financially or otherwise it makes people question Burriss' integrity. For him or his attorneys to even suggest that there are racial implications in him being denied the seat makes him look like even more of a fool. If Mr. Burris wanted the Senate seat then he should have stayed 100% clear of our corrupt Governor and run for the Senate seat. Burris has made a critical mistake in letting Blagejovich appoint him. His wisest move would be to withdraw his name and then let the Illinois House and Senate deal with the Governor and put the Senate seat up for election. If Burris gets the seat that way people will have no doubts but this way they most certainly will. Go back to Illinois Mr. Burris and bide your time.
