She is going to eat me out of house and home. Literally! |
| |
| I swear there is nothing she wont eat! First she started eating the trees and bushes in the back yard. She eats trash and anything that winds up close enough to pull through the fence. After she ate the trees and bushes she started to eat the back porch. She ate the food in her bowl and then tried to eat the bowl! Her eating is out of control and it needs to stop! I just cant take anymore! Her latest fiasco has left me seeking help. Two nights ago my sons had working cable in their bedroom but yesterday morning when they woke up the cable wasn't working. It worked everywhere else in the house so I knew it wasn't a service problem. The TV worked when I hooked it up in another room so I knew it wasn't the TV. I went outside this morning and found the problem. She had pulled the cable free from the side of the house and had chewed it in half. Luckily the boys' room is the only room on that particular section of the cable. But STILL!! I have tried many different things. I bought her chewy toys. I have scolded her. I have coated stuff with jabenero paste (which she hates). I just don't know what else to do. So here is my question: How do I get this dog to STOP eating me out of house and home? | | | | | |

| | You might want to muzzle her. My experience with a dog that won't stop chewing is to wait it out--it can take two years for a dog with a strong chewing instinct to outgrow it. A muzzle is a bit extreme but it will solve the problem until she gets past the need to chew. | | | | | | |

| | I forgot to mention in the discussion that she is a year old so you are telling me that i could have another whole year of her chewing? I dont like the thought of muzzling her but it may come down to that. | | | |

| | At one year she is still considered a puppy and yes, it could take another year before she outgrows it. (((sorry))) My dog is almost two and I still find stuff she has chewed up. She's not out of control about it but I can't leave stuffed animals or dirty socks lying about. She will eat them. One thing I do to minimize trouble is when we leave her alone we kennel her. I noticed that if she was given run of the house when no one is here she gets anxious and that anxiety leads to destructive behavior. You could start kenneling her when you aren't spending time with her--only let her in the yard to do her business and for exercise have one of the kids walk her. Doing that with Roxy has helped her quite a bit..she's part lab and rottie so the potential for destructive behavior is quite strong. | | | |

| | we cant afford to buy a kennel that big she is Chocolate lab and very big hubby wont allow the dogs in the house so at least she isnt eating the inside of the house LOL She gets lots of attention from me throughout the day while the kids are in school and the kids take her for a walk when the get home | | | |

| | He's the Dog Whisperer. I had absolutely refused to get another dog until Skip made me watch his show. I learned so much about dog training that I stopped being afraid of getting a dog and I use his training techniques and Roxy is as about close to perfect as you can get with a dog. | | | |

| | Totally. And another show to watch is "It's me or the dog". Different methods but equally effective. One thing I learned from Cesar is that dogs who don't have strong pack leadership will resort to destructive behavior, like chewing. A dog who doesn't know "her place" will try to take over the pack and almost every single behavior problem can be traced to a lack of strong leadership. I used to have this dog who was completely out of control. She chewed up everything she could get her mouth on, she would steal food off the counters right in front of me, and she would jump on people who came to the house. I didn't know it then but her behavior was the result of the way I had been treating her. She didn't respect me as the pack leader and was in fact trying to BE the pack leader. I ended up getting rid of her because I didn't have a clue how to deal with her. Now I know I could have fixed her in a few weeks if I had just used Cesar's techniques. | | | |

| | I love "It's me or the dog!" I dont think its a pack leadership thing She knows her place pretty well and she knows that I am the alpha dog other than the chewing she is very well behaved she wont even touch her food until i give say "okay" it must just be a puppy thing I guess some dogs just have more chewing problems than others because my pitt bull that i had didnt have the problem that she has | | | |

| | I know, right? He's like some freak of nature. I'm telling you I was as against getting a dog as you can get--no one in my house was even allowed to bring up the subject. My last experience was just THAT horrible. But Skip made me sit down and watch Cesar and within 3 episodes I was convinced I could handle a dog and I was right. Cesar is my dog guru. If he says it it's fact in my book. | | | |

| | My stupid dog is not chewing obsessed he is eating obsessed! He actually swallows all the non-food items he eats. He ate a bunch of fireworks, it was all I could do to not light a match near his butt to see what would happen. He ate all my kid's crayons and crapped rainbows. He eats paper towels which you can see later on when he poops them out, same thing for tin foil, so sometimes his poop sparkles! This is the same stupid dog who bit me last summer, and I STILL have a huge mark on my leg! He's probably EAT Caesar Milan! | | | |

| | All puppies chew, but most stop around the one year mark or perhaps a little after it. Have you taken her to the vet to see if she is still teething? It is not likely that she is eating due to being hungery, but to relieve her teeth. There are also very large cow bones tht you can buy, they still have a little meat on them, and yummy marrow inside (yummy for dogs anyways). Those used to keep my dog busy for hours. Not all pet stores carry these though. We used to buy them at a pet store that also had supplies for horses and such. Try those hopefully the dog will enjoy chewing on that more than your home. They are not cheap though they are between $12.00 and $17.00, but if it saves your property it could be well worth it. Otherwise you can creat a dog run, that will allow the dog to run back and forth but will not allow it access to the rest of the yard or the house. Good luck to you. | | | | | | |

| | First you might want to take her to the vet to verify that she is a dog and not a goat! LOL A strong chewing instinct is hard to overcome but one way is to chain or fence her in a small area away from things she can hurt and provide her chewy toys in this location only. After a while she will get used to only chewing on the toys / rawhides and won't look at other things. Good luck! | | | | | | |

| | I'd try a few weeks at first and then see if it takes. The dog won't understand if you have to repeat it but the idea is to get her used to only chewing on things that are provided for her. Good luck! | | | |

| | I am no dog expert, but it sounds to me like she's bored. Have you tried those Kong balls where you put food inside it and the dog has to try to get the food out? I had friends back home that had a dog that was doing similar things and when they gave it one of those hidden food balls, it would spend hours a day focused on it rather than on destructive stuff. They also used to give it these massive bones which kept it busy for ages too. If you haven't tried either of these two approaches, it might be worth a try! | | | | | | |

| | I don't know, cuz I got the same problem, if you figure it out let me know! My stupid dog eats the garbage, even after I poured a whole bottle of hot sauce in it, he eats everything, my furniture is chewed up and he even ATE MY DINING ROOM FLOOR!!! There is a 6 x 6 square of bare plywood in my dining room because he chewed and ate a huge patch of the linoleum that used to be there. The kitten had diarrhea and he ate it as it came out of the cat! (gross, but at least I didn't have to clean it up) He eats shoes, slippers, toys, clothes and he steals our food no matter how high we put it, turn your back for one second and it's gone. He ate all my spatulas too. If something is missing in my house, it is because the damned dog ate it. he's eaten diapers too. NOTHING is safe from his ravenous stupidity. he also eats bushes and trees and deer & rabbit poo outside. The dog is seriously retarded. I am pretty sure his previous owners (who couldn't bother to take care of him, that's why he's ours now) gave him drugs like weed and shrooms. You want to kill him but then you look into those big vacant eyes and know he can't help it because there is simply barely anything going on in that big empty head of his. | | | | | | |
