so you are telling me that i could have another whole year of her chewing?
I dont like the thought of muzzling her but it may come down to that.

At one year she is still considered a puppy and yes, it could take another year before she outgrows it. (((sorry))) My dog is almost two and I still find stuff she has chewed up. She's not out of control about it but I can't leave stuffed animals or dirty socks lying about. She will eat them.

One thing I do to minimize trouble is when we leave her alone we kennel her. I noticed that if she was given run of the house when no one is here she gets anxious and that anxiety leads to destructive behavior. You could start kenneling her when you aren't spending time with her--only let her in the yard to do her business and for exercise have one of the kids walk her. Doing that with Roxy has helped her quite a bit..she's part lab and rottie so the potential for destructive behavior is quite strong.

And I highly recommend watching Cesar Milan on National Geographic. You can find his videos on YouTube as well. He also has a book and a training video.

hubby wont allow the dogs in the house so at least she isnt eating the inside of the house LOL
She gets lots of attention from me throughout the day while the kids are in school and the kids take her for a walk when the get home

The you might be stuck with the muzzle option, but check out Cesar Milan first--he will have some good solutions.

He's the Dog Whisperer. I had absolutely refused to get another dog until Skip made me watch his show. I learned so much about dog training that I stopped being afraid of getting a dog and I use his training techniques and Roxy is as about close to perfect as you can get with a dog.

One thing I learned from Cesar is that dogs who don't have strong pack leadership will resort to destructive behavior, like chewing. A dog who doesn't know "her place" will try to take over the pack and almost every single behavior problem can be traced to a lack of strong leadership.

I used to have this dog who was completely out of control. She chewed up everything she could get her mouth on, she would steal food off the counters right in front of me, and she would jump on people who came to the house. I didn't know it then but her behavior was the result of the way I had been treating her. She didn't respect me as the pack leader and was in fact trying to BE the pack leader. I ended up getting rid of her because I didn't have a clue how to deal with her. Now I know I could have fixed her in a few weeks if I had just used Cesar's techniques.

other than the chewing she is very well behaved she wont even touch her food until i give say "okay"

I guess some dogs just have more chewing problems than others because my pitt bull that i had didnt have the problem that she has

Labs are notorious chewers. And if she's well behaved in other areas then it's most likely just that she's still a baby.

I'm telling you I was as against getting a dog as you can get--no one in my house was even allowed to bring up the subject. My last experience was just THAT horrible.

But Skip made me sit down and watch Cesar and within 3 episodes I was convinced I could handle a dog and I was right.

Cesar is my dog guru. If he says it it's fact in my book.

Oh and I know you said you couldn't afford a kennel but check Craigslist. I sold a kennel big enough to hold a Shetland Pony for 25 bucks.

My stupid dog is not chewing obsessed he is eating obsessed! He actually swallows all the non-food items he eats. He ate a bunch of fireworks, it was all I could do to not light a match near his butt to see what would happen. He ate all my kid's crayons and crapped rainbows. He eats paper towels which you can see later on when he poops them out, same thing for tin foil, so sometimes his poop sparkles!
This is the same stupid dog who bit me last summer, and I STILL have a huge mark on my leg!

I don't know..I saw Cesar tame a dog that was about five minutes from being put down for biting--he had to take him to his compound and it took several weeks but if a dog can be "fixed" Cesar can do it.

I'd try a few weeks at first and then see if it takes. The dog won't understand if you have to repeat it but the idea is to get her used to only chewing on things that are provided for her. Good luck!

Ok was reading through and see she's a chocolate lab..and trained to eat when you say okay..mine i trained to only eat when i snapped my fingers..he would sit still and stare at my fingers and then pounce on his food..but i was told after 5 yrs they finally settle down..I'm waiting and counting the days..lol..

I try not to use the kinds that have food in them because my dogs are on a closely watched diet
We have bought her the cow bones and they only last a couple hours
granted we get them cheap but still we cant afford to give her one every two hours LOL

He once got into the 30 pound container where I keep dog food and ATE IT ALL in one sitting, he crapped everywhere all the time for a week! THat was food to feed all THREE of my dogs for a month!

yeah, we've rescued some really stupid animals, but they are very cute! Out of my seven (God help me) cats, FOUR are completely stupid to the point that they REPEATEDLY jump into my 75 gallon aquarium if I leave it open for even a second. Out of the three dogs, two are retarded, and one is senile.
