Have You Ever Thought About.............. |
Some of my friends know of my obsession with apocalyptic movies. I find the genre really interesting. Doesn't matter what the scenario is, although I like the ones where there are survivors and they have to make do in a strange new world. These movies always get my gears to grinding and I have to think, "What would I do?" in these situations. I've done a similar discussion to this, in the past, but I have so many new friends now I wanted to ask some different questions and see what people say.
Ok, I am going to give you 3 different scenarios of the "end of civilization" and I want you to answer the best you can. I will also give some options, so that you can just pick if you don't want to get all into this. There are no wrong answers as we are all different and think differently. This could be really interesting and insightful.
Sorry no zombie scenarios that one has been done and done well! But if you just want to toss that in, that's fine.
Oh and this doesn't matter what country you are in. It will be interesting to get different cultural perspectives as well. Have fun and really think.
Scenario #1 There has been a nuclear holocaust you are in an area that has been minimally damaged although there is a cloud of radiation headed your way. a) you wait to die b) you try to head away from the cloud and into a "cleaner" territory c) you _________________________________________
Scenario #2 There has been a devastating plague and you are among the immune survivors. You hear rumors of a group that's about 500 miles away from you and they are rebuilding a primitive settlement as a safe harbor.
a) you attempt to gather a group and do the same where you are b) you head out for the settlement c) you __________________________________________
Scenario #3 Your country has been invaded and chaos and anarchy reign. Power plants have been hit and the invaders are barbaric and just darn mean. a) you join with or form a guerilla army and fight back b) you join up with the invaders and try to convince them of your loyalty to the new regime c) you ______________________________________________

1. plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | I don't have good answers I'm afraid IF. But I can answer definitively one of them. I sure would NOT do #3b!
On a somewhat related (in sort of an abstract way) I am recalling the movie Hell on The Pacific. Do you remember it? Two pilots, a US soldier (Lee Marvin) and a Japanese soldier (forget his name) learned that they had to not be enemies if they were to survive, as they both become marooned on a deserted island in the Pacific during the war. There is a message in there somewhere if we were to survive some of the scenarios you depicted.

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | OH THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Finally someone responded! LOL! Did you see Enemy Mine? I love that movie, I know it's cheesy, but the message is great. Similiar to what you are decribing in Hell on The Pacific. I'll have to look into that one. Thanks plunk dear, for stopping by! You're the best!

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Whew, thanks I was afraid I was regressing to one of those "bad" women!
Ok. I'd do 1a, 2b and 3a, pretty much, with some variations.
| |
plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | I don't think you'd do 1a. Your 3a reinforces that. While I haven't known you very long IF, you sure don't strike me as any kind of quitter. And i can put a period behind that..
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Wellll...I've read and watched alot about radiation sickness. NOT something I would want to endure, and then think of the devastation of plant and animal life. I'm not sure I could endure all the dead everything. Might be a long winter and I hate winter. I'm a sunny gal. I'm just not sure my sunny disposition could take all the hits it would take. I know my limitations and I'm just not real sure I could do that one. I KNOW I could do the others, no problemo, might be tough, but if I have my faith, people, animals and the sun, I'd get by.
Now if I lost all my family.....I'm afraid I might turn into some kind of warrior woman. I just wouldn't care until I found someone new to care about...IF I did!
| |
plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | Ya know, this discussion reminds me of one by another friend almost a year ago. And I forget who just now. But I gave a fairly detailed response in that one. If i find it, I'll PM you the link. That'll give you an idea the mind-set I might be in if faced with such a dilemma.

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Ok, good. It wasn't the Zombie Apocolyps one was it? LOL! That was Darkjedi's and it was too funny.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Ok, I'd do 1a with gusto! I'd throw my arms wide and scream, "come and get me sucker"! There, does that make you feel better?
| |
darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | I love enemy mine, never heard of Hell on the pacific, will have to find that.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | I read it Plunk and I can definately relate. Though married I have NO desire to be the last person on earth by any means. I've no desire to be alone or to be away from my daily life and family. My husband is my best friend, confidant and advisor, what would I do without all that. I cherish it too highly maybe. Being the last on earth....hhmm....I don't know if I could take my own life, but I would probably find a very safe spot and live it out quietly with many many animals around me.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Oh..and I'm interested, plunk ma dear, to know if your username has a meaning.
| |
plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | No, no meaning Friendly. I'd edit it if I could. It started off being plunkithere (as in; for chat) but because of sort of a long story that won't make a whole lot of sense to you, it became what it is and was too late to go back. You know when you hit that 'send' or 'agree' or whatever it was....Zoooooommmmm, it's gone and that's what you are.. If they ever ban me I might be back reincarnated with a different choice...no I better not tell just yet..
| |

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | There ya are, I was getting bored!
Ok, that does make more sense. I can see it now! Thanks!

| 2. fireheart99 (72) | 1 year ago | Very interesting discussion you started! I find the genre very interesting as well, ever since I saw "The Day After" when I was about 8 years old. My mother kept trying to turn the television off while my twin sister and I were watching it, telling us that we didn't need to know about those things. Although I had some nightmares after seeing the movie, I still watch and seek out those types of movies.
Here are my answers to your questions: 1. b - I would try to head away from the cloud to cleaner territory. Although, I live near what would be a major military target, so I would probably be vaporized before I could go anywhere. 2. b - I would head out toward the settlement. I would definitely have a need to be near other people who were immune, I would crave a sense of community. 3. a - I would join with a group of people to fight back. I would probably die figting, and consider it worth it.

3. SomeCowgirl (8291) | 1 year ago | I think for scenario one I try to find something to cover my mouth and eyes and nose, and ears.. but then again I guess I'd be better to run around in circles until I pass out from exhaustion and worry..
For scenario 2, I would stay in the area I was in and do the thing with the reconstructing... straw huts would be nice.
For scenario 3, I join or form an army of mad gorilla's with banana made out of gold... and fight back..
Okay I know what guerilla's are... lol

SomeCowgirl (8291) | 1 year ago | The radiation scenario instantly made me think of Indiana Jones 4, I won't say anything in case you haven't seen it. I haven't heard anything documentary wise on the hoover dam but if it can be run without human intervention for two years that would be the best bet. I don't like moving to far so I guess I would want to stay in the same place, stubborn as a mule.

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Do you get Netflix? The documentary was called Life After People, quite interesting!

I will set off alone wandering aimlessly looking for means to survive on my own scenario 3 i hunker down in my fallout shelter, start my generator up and hope like heck no one finds me

wrathofAnubis (341) | 1 year ago | just because I am still alive doesnt mean that I am immune it may just be festering and that same would apply to everyone else

| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Yip, we'll need to learn wild forgaging. I have some but am still learning plant identification, not as easy as it sounds. LOL! But I know alot of what IS edible.

darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | Yeah I dont know to much about plants lol.
| |
wrathofAnubis (341) | 1 year ago | are there any animals left around here? or did they all die with the rest of the human population? if so i can hunt, skin and butcher as well as cook just about any critter
| |
darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | It would probably depend on what happened. Nuclear war, well lots of animals in areas with fallout and where the bombs hit would be dead, but others wouldnt be. With the plague, it would depend if it went cross species or not. Like with the stand it killed dogs also, but not other animals. With being invaded, there would be lots of animals around still.
| |
wrathofAnubis (341) | 1 year ago | well I will be the hunter tess can be the gatherer what you gonna do jedi? we can just make our own civilization
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Ok good, cause I do NOT like the skinning part although I can process it afterwards. The eyes still get to me.
| |

darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | Well I can learn to hunt and skin and all that, and I can learn to garden, and well Ill definetly be one of the defenders, and go out and get stuff we need.
| |
wrathofAnubis (341) | 1 year ago | Can you shoot? better question - can you hit the broad side of a barn when you shoot? LOL
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | If not...little practice and we'll have him up to snuff. We'd also need those proficient with bow and arrow or throwing knives, neither of which I have the skill for. There's always another weapon du jour! LOL!
| |
wrathofAnubis (341) | 1 year ago | if he can at least hit the broad side of a barn we will just find him some grenades or something that you dont have to be 100% precise with LOL

darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | Lol rifles I can, never shot a handgun. Its been awhile though, and I used to have a .22 rifle, and shot, and hit, crawdads a few years ago. Hmmm 6 out 10 times I hit, and well animals and humans are a lot bigger then a crawdad lol. Ive also shot a bow before, but that was long long long long long time ago.

5. Sissygrl (5760) | 1 year ago | lol okay okay okay.. i found your discussion and someone HAS answered it now.. lets see..
#1 - I guess i would try to run to cleaner territory to keep on living.. i wouldnt have much other option.. not that i can think of..
#2 - I would gather up people and make my own settlement with the help of the others.

Nope, cuz we are everybody's friend!

Ya the -45 isn't very common. Far more common is 0. Last night was cold though, got down to -12 or so. And today never broke +12. This is pretty normal for this time of year. We have had it way colder and way milder. We haven't even had our Jan thaw yet...unless it was that one back in Dec.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | OMgosh......bbrrrrr. It's nearing 80 here today, which is NOT helping this stupid hot flash I am having! LOL! But hey....
So how long does winter last there? Do you GET a spring and summer?{{shivers}}. I can handle cold, if there's vera little wind and the sun shines at least every 2 days!
| |
plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | This has been one of the sunniest winters I can ever remember. Especially for Non Dec and Jan so far. USually we don't get the sun until late Feb Mar. Winter here goes Nov 1st to April 1st. Our winter, while way colder, is a lot easier to take than winter in TOR, for example. There it is way milder, but dirty, wet with cold humidity and windy. Just miserable. Our summers are HOT. 75 to 95 as a rule for June July Aug. And often pretty humid, but not as humid as TOR or nearly as humid as New York or Baltimore. We never get hurricanes, rarely get a tornado and flooding is not a large scale problem here. Many call it God's country..but those are usually the ones who live in TO, haha
| |
plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | How maNY montha of winter do you get? I recall seeing snow on the ground in the very very early episodes of Dallas. Which shortforms? TO and TOR both is Toronto. Were there others?
| |
leenie50 (1829) | 1 year ago | Hey Plunk, Were you born in Canada? How does one handle such cold weather? If it's a dry cold I could do it. And Irish, does texas get as humid as Florida? I hate the humidity here.
| |
Sissygrl (5760) | 1 year ago | I hate tononto.. and ontario in general i lived there 5 years and came back to nova scotia, we have had hurricanes and giant blizzards, but its all good. its worth it to live here.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Uh...plunk.....that was TV man! LOL! They can MAKE snow ya know! Besides it was probably smog fallout in DALLAS! Let's see...we got snow when my son was 2 I think it was. He's 4 1/2 now. It lasted 2 days...if I remember correctly. Vive La Tejas!
| |
plunketear (1241) | 1 year ago | Well i thought it was pretty unusual too, but it was no set stage of snow believe me. I recall the scene cuz it was on about 3 months ago as repeat. Shows a car driving up their long driveway and into the front yard and there was at least a heavy wet 5" of snow everywhere. It was pretty unique cuz never did they show snow in any other episode. So i guess it was a rare one-off and they went ahead and shot the scene anyway.
leenie, TO is a humid cold. But a few hours north of there it is a dry cold. And usually not as windy. But if it does get windy when the temps are low, then there is significant wind chill and that can make it so you have to wear a scarf so you don't get frost bite. But those are only pretty rare times.
Friendly can confirm, but I'm pretty sure TX is not nearly as humid as FL. I'm curious about that as well. What about the Rocky Mtn area. It is quite humid in summer there too isn't it?
You mentioned it was 80 the other day. That did surprise me. Is that a normal temp day for there in Jan? It would be so cool to be able to bike year round down there. What about mosquitos, are they bad where you are?

9. darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | Wow this is something I have never ever thought about before at all. Yeah right lol. When I was in college the first time I actually wrote a paper about what could happen after an apocalyptic nuclear war and what and could happen lol, I even included mutants. The teacher said it was one of the best papers she had seen and I got an A+ on it lol. Hmmm no zombies, well that sucks, but well I have also thought about all the rest extensively lol.
Hmmm
Number 1.
There are ways to see that the fallout is moving closer to you, birds dying, dark clouds, rain will have fallout in it. There is no way I would just sit down and wait to die. Depending on how long I have before it gets to me, I would find some supplies, a vehicle and get the hell out. Move away from the fallout, if I find anyone else surviving see if they want to join up with me.
Number 2.
Well seeing as how im immune since I survived, I would again get supplies, and look for a motorcycle or horse since well the streets would most likely be really really blocked from people trying to flee and dying in their cars. I would most definetly have a crowbar with me since you can use that to open just about anything. Lots of vehicles will have useful stuff, so will houses, hell so will corpses. If there is anyone with me I would see if they want to head towards the other survivors or not, if they do, well we wont just head to them without any scouting because they might be a good group that is actually letting people in, or a former military unit just wanting to rule everyone or well even cannibals. You just never know. Depending on what we found out, I would either join these others or go somewhere else, maybe start our own community, maybe one staying in one area but most likely always moving, because food and stuff will only last so long in one area, and never know might find other survivors.
Number 3.
Yet another one I have thought about extensively lol. There is no way in hell I would join up with the invaders, oh hell no. I would either join or form my own guerrilla army, kinda like red dawn lol. Have some cool name, kick their assses lol. Probably get killed, but oh well I would die for this country if I had to.
Anymore? Please please I love this kind of stuff hehehehe:D.

darkjedi (4380) | 1 year ago | LOl yeah can definetly understand that, but well even if I had radiation poisoning I wouldnt just give up, I would probably keep moving until I couldnt.
Well not all I havent seen the Hoover dam one yet. Havent seen it on, I should probably download it lol, whats the name of it again?
WOLVERINES!!!!!
Hell yeah it is, unfortunetly they are talking about making a remake, ugh. This time not with russians but with, get this, terrorists. Um what? Terrorists? And they have the resources, and all that to actually invade and parachute in or whatever? I think not.
Yep a crowbar, it will open almost anything, and if you have to you can use it as a weapon.
Check this link out, and well site, one of the ones I love.

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | Oh you and your zombies! LOL! I knew you'd fit them in somehow.
It's called Life After People. I got it from Netflix but it was done by the History Channel. Pretty good. What I thought was very interesting was that they went back to the Chernobyl(sp) incident..what was that 20-25 yrs. Anyways, the animals and plants have all come back so that was encouraging in the wake of nuclear holocaust. Radiation was very tolerable too, no suits on those that went back to visit it.

10. OLIJULSAR (1063) | 1 year ago | Wow...Irish you have been busy girl.....I don't normally watch this type of movie but your discussion seemed interesting and got me thinking also...."JUST WHAT WOULD I DO AND HOW WOULD I HANDLE THIS?"In your first movie I would definitely head away from the cloud. That would be senseless to just sit and wait to die whe you may be able to find a safe area. And if you don't at least you tried. In the second one I would take whoeve wanted to go with me and head out for the safe settlement. Who's to say that it is really all that far away. And lastly, I would definitely have to form an army and fight the people who are trying to take my country from me. Hopefully with God on my side I would be victorious, and if not at least I didn't join with the enemy.

Irishfrndly65 (7436) | 1 year ago | My reasoning is I've read about radiation poisoning....not pretty to live through it, most likely you won't anyway. Rather make it quick than slow, miserable, ill, messy and painful!
