HMO's versus socialized medicine |
|
Listening to Obama it seems that he has succumbed to the pressures from vested interest and will support the HMO system of inadequate medical coverage for the American people.
I have personal experience with several of the HMO's through the union to which I belong and whether it is Kaiser, Aetna, or any of the other institutions there is none of them which provide medical care which compares with that offered in countries with socialized medicine.
I have been with socialized medicine in Norway, Canada and Denmark.
How long do you feel we should accept second class medical care for the sake of big business?
How long do you think we should pay several times the amount for medical coverage that people do in countries where there is socialized medicine?

I myself had to fore go one of my meds just before Christmas due to falling into the so called medicare gap when i was required to pay the total cost of my med and couldn't come up with the $94 at the time this was just one of the 6 i am supposed to take

Gnosisquest (779) | 12 months ago | Its all about the wealthy; through work it costs me about $15000 a year for coverage and on top of that my taxes are used to pay for the poor and wealthy. I wouldn't say anything if it was quality care I received but it is very poor; cheap hospital equipment, hard to get an appointment when I need it and I'm sick of listening to how bad medical care is where there is medical coverage for everyone.
What is hardest to believe is that people actually fall for the lies put out by the representatives of the HMO's. Sure these institutions have purchased enough senators to stay in business but why put up with it?
I thought maybe Obama would put a stop to it but it appears he has been bought also.

sharra1 (3032) | 12 months ago | It is all about money and I cannot understand why so many people in America are against it, there are even poor people against it. I think they go nuts when they hear the word socialism and they see it as evil. Why do they not see greed as just as evil.
I cannot understand why people think that caring for everyone is some sort of devils work it is most bizarre. America's health system is only for the rich they do not want anyone else. I have heard stories of people dying because the ambulance could not find a hospital that would take in a patient without medical insurance. That is manslaughter in my mind and yet they are opposed to euthanasia. Very strange. You are not allowed to kill yourself but its ok to die because you are poor.
That is one very strange country.

Gnosisquest (779) | 12 months ago | In countries where they have socialized medicine you get health care to get well. In the US you have medicine to make money; Doctors are handicapped by the dollar.

3. sharra1 (3032) | 12 months ago | Well I live in a country that has socialised medicine and I would not have it any other way. There is still a private system for those who can afford to pay and want to but and healthy insurance to cover the gap between what the government pays and what the hospital and doctor's charge.
It may not be perfect and we do have waiting lists but at least everyone has access not just the wealthy. I cannot understand how it got so expensive in your country. It just seems like greed to me.
I do not think your hospitals are any better than our are but we certainly treat our citizens a lot better and we definitely treat the disadvantaged people much better than you do.

4. kijiky (582) | 12 months ago | I Think the United States should have socialized medicine. I think it would be much better than medicare. I have a friend that lives in Canada, her father has Cancer and they have never seen a bill for any of the medical costs. There are a few things they expect from the family though. You are expected as family members when a person is in the hospital to assist the staff in taking care of the patient. Assist in changing sheets, bathing, and that kind of thing, helping make sure your family member is taken care of. And why shouldn't you help in your families care? We have become to pampered. I was in the Emergency room back in October and just that visit cost 917 dollars and I was only there 3 hours!!! And all I had was a dislocated shoulder. That was outrageous. But because I had medicare they could charge a higher cost then if I was on medicaid or state aide. Way over price.

5. RobinJ (2017) | 12 months ago | Good morning, I live in Canada, and yes we do have a fairly good medical coverage, or fees are figured out by your previous years income, and it can fall any where from $75 per month per person up to $375 for a family of 5 or more.to $7 per month or for those that are on social assistance no charge. This gives us access to any doctor, hospital,in Canada. our provincial governments do have a say on which prescriptions are going to be on the forumlary, these drugs are given away at a lower cost or free again depending on income. As you can imagine a lot of our tax dollars are spent on medical. The province also caps the doctors earnings, by limiting the amount of patients they can see per day. They also cap the fees of the doctors, for instance medical may only pay $5000 per birth. I have no idea what the fee is that is a general idea of fees. Specialists of course get larger fees, etc.So there are some people that have lots of money will travel to some where where there is not a waiting list and pay cash for their medical service. But for the most part, it is wait and be put on a list. In the place where I live we have very recently opened a new hospital, it is different that any thing in Canada, it is privately owned, provincially operated, and public used.I can see problems forthcoming as the owners have and are shareholders, which mean it is and will be profit driven. Could be interesting.

Gnosisquest (779) | 12 months ago | I understand; however here in the states I belong to an HMO which costs about $15000 a year. On top of this I pay for medical out of my taxes. Then there is the $150 per admission to a hospital, $10 co pay for routine examination and $7-60 co pay for medicines and so on.
The waiting period in Canada may not be as bad as it is in some of these HMO's but if you have enough money here you can get immediate medical attention like anywhere else. Oh and the US is the only industrialized nation in which citizens still die on the streets due to lack of insurance.

| 6. oadgmd (99) | 12 months ago | This is really a great discussion. HMOs coverage are incomplete in the philippines and can only be afforded by the middle class. When i was still affiliated with a government owned hospital, everything was free even the meds, if we had them. However, stocks would easily be depleted because of the demand and treatment would be difficult. Socialized medicine is a great way to address this problem. ( of course with those in the lower economic classes still receiving free service)I hope you guys in the States preserve this practice.
