Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, which TV series of Joss Whedon is better? email this discussion to a friend?

kkknrd (38)1 year ago

I used to be a fan of the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer so I would have to say Buffy. I know the latter got some potential but I chose Buffy because the success of Joss Whedon with it was in the juxtaposition of the wildly inventive and sinister supernatural world against the simple and sometimes banal human world. The dialogue was witty. The characters were fun and engaging. And the storyline, though fantastical and morbid, were actually very telling of the human condition.

I would say Angel, maybe because I didn't really watch Buffy that much. I started watching Angel out of curiosity, and then I got hooked. I think it jumped the shark though when they aged Connor. And when they killed Cordelia, I was done. She was half the show, and I liked her character on Angel.

I'd have to say that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was better too. Its Angel spin-off started off interestingly with former Buffy characters - Cordelia, Angel and Nigel (the Watcher guy?) - but it unfortunately, did not follow through well, in my opinion.

I may be partial to Buffy because I grew up watching it and Sarah Michelle Gellar is so tiny - like me - so I guess that's a bit relate-able (and the similarity ends there! LOL Anyway, it was widely popular given its target demographic (tweens & teens) back in the day and its storyline also matured along with its characters. To sum up, Buffy the Vampire Slayer worked it until its inevitable conclusion.:)

I would go for Angel because of the following reasons: 1) The main characters. While Buffy loved her friends and would listen to their suggestions, 99% of the time it was her way or no way. And even if her way was wrong, or Buffy hurt her friends feelings to accomplish her goals, or she rushed into a situation head long and got a friend hurt, somehow the writers made every thing work out so that the viewers would hopefully feel sympathetic towards Buffy instead of the injured party. Whereas on Angel, even though he was the leader, he listened to everyone's contributions. And when he made the huge mistake of firing his friends because they were his only ties to doing the right thing, it was Angel that was proven wrong. It was his friends we felt sorry for. It was Angel who had an epiphany. It was Angel who went to his friends and apologized for being such a jerk. It was Angel who put Wesley in charge so everyone would learn to trust him again, even knowing that he would have to take orders from a mere human. Not an easy thing for a vampire to do.

2) The supporting characters. The characters on Angel were allowed to mature and grow while staying true to character. Wesley, the bumbling ex-watcher, became a wise, hardened, yet compassionate man after going through more than one trial. But through all of this he still retained his lack of self-esteem due to the harsh upbringing of his father. Cordelia, the spoiled little cheerleader from Sunnydale who hated being involved with the Scoobies or the fight against demons, transitioned into a woman who accepted the visions given to her and fought tooth and nail for justice, while still showing glimpses of her "Queen C" attitude. Gunn, the streetwise character we knew and loved did become a lawyer in Season 5, but he still admitted that he wanted to hit the streets and kill the bad guys and in the end, that's exactly what he did. Fred, the shy, scared little girl from Texas who ended up in Pylea, became a fierce fighter who could hold her own, yet still let her brains lead her. Change but yet consistency. However, on Buffy, while the sidekicks were allowed to grow up as well, they were not consistently written true to character. Tara and Dawn might have been exceptions to the rule but the others were subjected to being changed for dramatic effect or storyline purposes. Are we to believe that Willow, the girl who loved Tara so much she tried to end the world when Warren killed Tara, would fall into bed with the first girl who came on to her, less than a year after Tara's death? Not a chance. Spike, the vampire capable of love but also the only vampire to have killed two vampire slayers would suddenly fall in love with a vampire slayer? I might have believed that if, after the chip were removed, Spike had realized that his obsession for Buffy was not love but merely the obsession of a vampire who couldn't kill his third slayer. After his and Buffy's first time, Spike even eluded to that fact by saying that he knew the only thing as good as killing a slayer would be going to bed with one. Giles, the man who tolerated Angel because Buffy loved him, suddenly sides with a total stranger in the guise of Principal Wood, goes against Buffy's wishes and tries to kill Spike because his chip has been removed? It's hard for me to believe that Giles would be so tolerant of Angel and so willing to kill Spike given the fact that Angel(us) had killed Giles' girlfriend and left her dead on his bed as a present while Spike was merely annoying. And the biggest example of all? Xander. Time and time again, we were given glimpses of just how smart and strong the 'normal guy' could be, only to be given the bumbling, silly sidekick the next episode. Every time I thought Xander would be consistently shown to be capable and smart, I was disappointed. No more so than when the 'white knight' of the group walked away from Anya at the altar. Yes, I can believe Xander calling off the marriage after being shown all his fears of hurting Anya. What I cannot believe is that the loyal, caring Xander that I had fallen in love with through almost six seasons could walk away and leave Anya to tell everyone of their decision. If it had been written in true character instead of for dramatic effect, Xander would have joined Anya in telling all their friends and loved ones that they had decided not to marry instead of running away like a coward.

3) Character utilization. Even when Angel and Company took over Wolfram and Hart, they still remained the main core of the show. They weren't overshadowed by Eve, Lindsey, or the Senior Partners. Not even the popular and loved Spike received more air time than the others. Yet on Buffy, when the Potentials came to town, many of the main characters were kicked to the side as the Potentials were given more and more air time. Only Buffy, Willow and Spike remained on screen as much as they had in previous years. While I know the Potentials had to be given some air time, they were not the characters we had learned to love and loved to watch.

4) Emasculation of the male figures. Being a woman and a mother of two girls, I loved Joss' idea of 'girl power', showing that females don't always have to be victims. That there are strong women in the world. I applaud that but not to the point where it emasculates all the males around them. I mean, are we to believe that two of the most powerful vampires of all time, namely Angel and Spike, would need to be rescued by Buffy during a fight? How many times did I watch them fight alongside Buffy, only to get their butts kicked by fledglings and have Buffy rescue them? Two and two in this case does not add up to four. On his own show, Angel was never taken down by a weaker vampire and was strong. As was Spike when he showed up for Season Five. They both managed to fight the good fight, help and care for the humans around them and still be terrifying to watch when they were angry.

Yes, Buffy had some of the greatest and most creative episodes of all time. "Hush", "The Body" and "Once More, With Feeling" to name a few. However, in assessing both shows in a hopefully impartial way, I would have to stick with the reasons I named above and go with Angel as being the better show.

this makes angel a humble vampire. and humans, we all like those who display humility.

I loved both shows and miss them both, but when it comes down to which one was better I would have to go with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show was witty, the lead character played her part perfectly, and the supporting cast could not have been better chosen.

The show also grew along with the characters, when the characters were younger the show revolved around their teenage lives, and focused on things that high school students would be concerned about while all along the gang was trying to rid the town of the vampire population.

This is a pretty easy for me because although I did enjoy Buffy, Angel had a few advantages coming second. First of the characters "borrowed" from Buffy were better portrayed and more humanized since outside of Buffy and the "Scoobies" they wasn't much interest or character development for most of them. Look at Wesley Windom Price, after he jumped ship the character made leaps and bounds as far as appeal and development. He went from a bumbling quasi-coward nerd to a certified bad a$$, a role which i think better suits one who was supposed to train a Slayer I mean Giles wasn't a total wuss but Wesley dwarfed him by both series end in kick a$$ points if you ask me.

Also, Angel unlike Buffy has a rich back story and lengthy history which intrigued viewers as well as provided tons of room for future plots. If the show had been purely about who Angel had been throughout history and his adventures the show still would of been a success. Those are things Buffy couldn't pull off or even be accessible to. Angel's dark past also gave him many more layers to his character (arguably) isn't equaled by Buffy Summers.

Oh and there was also the total lack of high school drama. The soap opera of the early seasons of Buffy really turned me off from that show. It wasn't til much later in the show's run was I impressed enough to go "you know I wonder how they got here."

it is nice of you to have explained it this way, barzales. yes, i like angel better over buffy, too. only i cannot put to word why this is so.

imagining angel showing on television over that of buffy, if they go on same time slot, i know i will surely pick angel.

it seems like buffy is more superficial and that angel is heavier. only, i just can't explain it well and good.

my household used to be a fan of both shows, too.

the moment that i may be made to choose between the two shows never crossed my mind before.

personally though, i prefer angel. i might not be able to spill the reasons for the picking yet. it's just that, that is how i weigh it for the time being.

After watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then Angel I was a little disappointed with Joss Whedon. Buffy not only empowered Angel in the show but on it as well. On Buffy the Vampire Slayer I always remember the demons, gods, vampires, and so on to be there for a purpose. Joss Whedon always stuck with one plot whether it would be to find the key, the harvest, the first, and so on. He kept with that plot for more than a couple episodes. It kept you at the edge of your seat wondering if next week Glory will figure out that Dawn is the key. Will OZ cheat on Willow with that other werewolf? There where so many details added to this show nothing was left unquestioned. The last episode of Angel was like the last episode of the Soprano's. You can go with the obvious answer but you want to see it.

Considering that the only episodes of Angel I really enjoyed watching were the ones the ones that involved Buffy. Joss needed away to keep the fan favorite Angel (David Boreanaz) in the mix of things as Buffy continued her fight against evil. When Angel was given a soul he was not able to fall in love, if he did his soul would be taken. After Angel and Buffy's romance and true love, which was not what Angel had expected from the young slayer. Leaving him to loose his soul, regain it, and then getting his own show.

After Angel left Sunnydale, he began fighting evil in Los Angeles. Angel Investigations was under way. For the most part I did like a lot of episodes that they have done. For example, in the final season of Buffy, Willow got a phone call from Fred (a cast member on Angel) saying that she needed her help. As she left for Los Angeles she ended up on Angel to help him regain his soul. While she was there another slayer was helping Angel investigations. Willow took Faith back to Sunnydale with her, for the fight against the first evil. I liked the way Joss Whedon worked both shows together as if they were still part of one another.

Another episode that coincides with one another is when Buffy's show had ended and Angel was head of Wolfram & Hart. Angel was given an amulet to help Buffy with the war against the first evil. Buffy wanted Angel to go back to Los Angeles just it case it got past them she would have a back up. She ended up giving it to another "champion", which in fact was another vampire with a soul, Spike. He ended up saving the world, when the amulet gave off rays of light killing everything in the hell mouth including Spike. Later on, Angel received the amulet that Spike wore in the final episode of Buffy. Along with the amulet was Spike who returned from nonexistence. He ended up with a spot on Angle's show as another champion vampire with a soul.

Honestly, I liked Angel when it didn't seem so cheesy (in particular the episode with Jasmine). From beginning to the end Buffy the Vampire Slayer never kept me bored.

As a convert to Buffy, I have learned that the initial impression or judgement is not always to be believed. In this case, I would go with the TV show Angel. The early episodes have at least the advantage over Buffy's of a decent budget and an established universe (though care was taken not to alienate new viewers), but I still found them unsatisfying. I didn't realize initially that the writers had, during Angel Season 1, relatively little idea of what to do with this show long-term, and I was struggling to maintain more than an idle interest. Once again, it was Faith to the rescue.

Angel was outstanding. It was darker, occasionally funnier and you got to see a whole lot more of David Boreanez. But the thing that marks Buffy out as superior is its relevance to real life and our life today. Angel and Buffy may have defeated numerous forces of darkness but Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the first to stick up a firm middle finger at convention.
