Does Canon IS really help? | | I shoot with a Canon, and I have IS lenses. I am not sure whether IS really helps me or not. I don't notice a difference whether its off or on.
What am I doing wrong?

In practice, this will only be obvious at slow shutter speeds and high magnification. High magnification will be most apparent in macro photography and when using long telephoto lenses, especially in poor light.
At normal focus distances in reasonable light, you will not see any effect from your stabilised lenses; in fact, you should turn off the IS function, since it reduces battery life.
Likewise, flash shots and photos taken with the camera supported on a tripod don't show much benefit from IS.
If the shutter speed is at least as fast as the reciprocal of the lens, IS is probably not needed (eg if the lens is set at 300mm and the shutter speed is at least 1/300; or 1/500 for a 500mm lens) most people can hold the camera steady without IS.

Thanks for your response. So, the whole IS thing is over hyped. When doing telephoto, chances are that the camera will be mounted on a tripod anyway, so hopefully the stabilization is achieved through that.
I keep hearing how the IS helps people with 1-stop or 2-stops while hand holding. Personally, I have not noticed any difference.
Cheers.

Try shooting whales from the deck of a pitching boat with and without; or small rainforest birds in the dimness of a rainforest; or actors in a dimly lit theatre from the back row, or paintings i n a "flash-free" museum or cathedral.
IS is a real advantage when the light is poor and you want (or are forced) to use) slow shutter speeds.
