Making a cake... email this discussion to a friend?

So, for my daughters 2nd birthday, I would like make her a birthday cake using fondant. It's something I haven't tried before, but those cakes just look so nice. I think it would be very special. I like to watch Ace of cakes and another show I think its call Wedding cakes. I haven't taken a class or anything. Can't afford to right now. But I have been looking on websites and also youtube.com. I got the general idea. Doesn't seem too hard...lol I think maybe I will try a little cake first. I was just thinking maybe a 2 tier cake. I might just use white cake with buttercream or creamcheese. Anyway, do you have any suggestions on where to purchase the fondant and any suggestions on what type of cake and icing is best?

It's so nice of you to take the effort and bake the for your daughter, although she is still very young, she will be really happy that her mum does that to her. Do remember to take pictures of the cake you bake, and show it to your daughter next time. happy
Well, I am not good at baking cakes at all, so I can't suggest anything to you. Hope that you'll be happy baking the cake and celebrating the birthday with your daughter.^_^

Aww, thank you! Yeah, 2 is still young, but last year we did not do much. It was just a few family members. I figured at the age of 1, she wouldn't know too much of what was going on. So, this year I figure I would throw her an actual birthday party with other kids.:) I will definitely take pictures of the cake even if it doesn't turn out great...lol I haven't bake much either, but I will try.:) Anyway, thanks for responding, and have a great one!:)

In my opinion fondant icing does not taste the best. It's like a tootsie roll with out the chocolate (although you can buy chocolate fondant). If you are dead set about using fondant I would ice the cake in a thin layer of buttercream then use the fondant. You can purchase fondant at walmart in the cake decorating section which is usually located in the arts and crafts or in the new Walmarts it tends to be located with the party supplies. Fondant can also be found at Hobby Lobby's or I'm sure at any other craft store. A tip when using fondant would be to use confectioners sugar to flower your surface and roller to keep the fondant from getting sticky. My granddaughter is a cake decorator and she put this information on here for me.

I kinda figured it wouldn't taste all that good. I just like the way it looks...lol I was thinking about it and I might not do it just because it is a lot of sugar and the parents of the other kids might be mad at me later....lol j/k I don't know, I might just try it just for fun and see if that is something I would want to do. Thanks for letting me know of all places to purchase it at. I do like the buttercream icing, I might just stick to that. Thanks again for the info, it very helpful! Have a good one!:)
