Kellogg recalls 16 products for salmonella risk
January 17, 2009 12:30 AM| 1 Comment

Kellogg Co. late Friday recalled 16 products containing peanut butter due to possible salmonella contamination, adding new urgency to the nationwide outbreak as federal officials confirmed contamination at a Georgia facility that ships peanut products to 85 food companies.

The Battle Creek, Mich., company earlier this week had asked stores to pull some of its venerable Keebler crackers from shelves as a precaution.

But in a statement late Friday, Kellogg said it was voluntarily announcing a formal recall of the crackers and other products in light of the problems in Georgia.

The outbreak has sickened hundreds of people in 43 states, including Illinois, and killed at least six.

"The actions we are taking today are in keeping with our more than 100-year commitment to providing consumers with safe, high-quality products," said David Mackay, Kellogg's president and CEO. "We apologize for this unfortunate situation."

The recall includes Austin and Keebler branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, as well as some snack-size packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies.

Sandra Williams, a compliance officer with the Food and Drug Administration in Detroit, advised consumers not to eat the product and to contact a doctor if they have any symptoms. She also urged careful disposal of the tainted products to avoid the risk of homeless people finding and eating them.

"Kellogg reacted promptly to this potential public health risk after receiving notification of the potential problem from their supplier," Williams said

We buy peanut butter crackers but my husband likes Lance and I like Ritz. We don't buy the Famous Amos cookies. I don't worry about getting sick since we don't buy peanut butter in bulk and have no idea who these companies are that make it. I just hope they don't start recalling their Kellog cereal, especially the two we eat all the time!

Barb,
Thank you for your responds, these different name peanut butter manufactures supply schools and hospital and institutions that sever food.
Unless your favorite cereal is made with peanut butter your likely safe.

Regards,
Rose

I read this article earlier today! I buy those Austin crackers sometimes, but luckily we dont have any in the house right now. I have a friend who's daughter just got diagnosed with salmonella so she's having those crackers (which she's beeing giving her kids) tested by her dr. It's so scary to me that you can do everything in your power to keep your kids safe, but things like this can come up anyway.

I'm so glad I signed into mylot today! I hardly ever watch tv, and knew nothing of this. Thank goodness though that we haven't purchased any of the products being recalled. I don't think I will keep any of the other brands containing peanut butter as a precaution. Not too long ago our area was infected by e.coli and that was very scary. (A local restaurant caused the outbreak and several hundred people got sick and one man died as a result.)I'm not taking any chances!

Thanks so much for posting this!

Thank you for your responds, keep an eye on the news as much as you can so much is going on so fast it is about the only way we know about the dangers out there like in the peanut butter out break unless some one tells us.
They are saying it would be wise not to eat any crackers, cookies or any thing made with peanut butter that is bought in the store.
They are saying jar peanut butter like Jiffy and so forth don't seem to have any problem, the peanut butter on recall is manufactures that make peanut butter for schools, hospitals, institution, little Debbie has willingly called all their peanut butter crackers, cookies and so forth to be taken off the shelves for a public safety measure.

Take Good Care!
