I can tell you about the history of belts .
and its relation in terms with human efforts and characters.

WEll karate was not exactly stared at japan but believed to be. It was started in okinawa.

The BLACk colour is the traditional colour of japan .
The japanese believed that a man starts form a weak beggining and reaches the strong end.
similiarly the colour starts from white, the lighest that sybolises a man to be a weak and beginner.
It gradually become dark going from yellow, orange, green ...black .
Black is the darkest colour where a man becomes the strongest and toughest .!!!

as I know your belt become darker and darker this means the more prepared you are for a fight. martial art grading system is designed for warriors so if the more darker is your belt the more better the belt colors where I had known. white, green, blue, purple, brown, black
