Cary's IEP |
If you missed it, Cary is my son with autism. He had his three year IEP* meeting yesterday.
Well I'm happy to report that he is doing great with math (except for having some difficulty with word problems) and spelling (better than many kids with no learning disability) and reading. He's having some predictable problems with things like comprehension, expressive language, abstract concepts, social skills, etc. But he is progressing quite well and I'm very happy about it!
When Cary was first diagnosed his dad was pretty doom and gloom about it, convinced he would never be functional, etc. So I'm quite happy with his progress. He may never be 100% 'normal', but I have no worries about him ultimately being able to function on his own.

dawnald (9518) | 11 months ago | Autism can be quite difficult but Cary doesn't have a lot of the problems that other autistic kids have. Some of them bang their heads and freak out at certain colors and can't stand to be touched and so on. He's definitely got problems but it could be a lot worse!

hildas (2130) | 11 months ago | Yes it could and I am glad hes ok. My cousin has just had a little downs baby. We where all really upset for her three weeks ago as she was very down about it all herself, but they are saying hes doing well. We are close cousins and I have to do a lot to help her out, so I have been online also reading all I can. She will get there though as she does love him.

dawnald (9518) | 11 months ago | Except with downs syndrome there's not much hope that they'll be out on their own and self-sufficient, is there? Doesn't mean you don't love them though...

hildas (2130) | 11 months ago | Yes! I think thats what got her down. Shes ok now (well I think she is). It is her first baby also and I really feel sorry for her, but they are saying about his palms are good and he can feed on his own which are good signs, but I have been looking it all up as we have not a clue, but shes getting help and stuff now.

dawnald (9518) | 11 months ago | I'm glad that there's help for her. It's going to be hard but the few down's children that I have met have been at least teachable (feeding themselves and toilet functions, speaking, etc), so it's not all bad. Good luck to her.

7. cynthiann (3041) | 11 months ago | I am so happy for you, my friend. I have a son with learning disabilities so I now what a stress it can be. Anyway, this son is now married to a math brain with her masters who is considering doing her PHD. Yet she sees in my son the wonderful qualities that he has. You must be overjoyed with this great report on him. You are a good mother and I hope that his progress continues. Blessings

| 10. Charente (77) | 11 months ago | That's great news about your son. I used to work in a school that had a special educational needs department and the SEN teachers and teaching assistants did really fantastic work with the kids that needed extra help. There was a large number of pupils that were on the autistic spectrum but they all had extra help and they were some of the hardest working kids in the school. At the end of each year the SEN kids had their own presentation evening to celebrate their achievements during the year. I'm sure your son will achieve great things within his capabilities and make you proud of him, given the support he is getting from home. He's very lucky to have such a loving and supportive family.
