Melatonin?? |
| |
| My freind who has a horrible time falling asleep was taking tylenol pms at night. I suggested she call and ask her doctor if he had any ideas of anything that might help. He told her to get some Melatonin. Has anyone heard of this of take it for sleep? She knows nothing about it and is a bit nervous to take it. I would appreciate a reply to this discussion if you have taken it or know anything about it. Thanks! | | | | | |

| | Yes I do take it and here's what the doctor told me to do. Start with a dosage of 3 milligrams. Increase the dosage 1 milligram every night until you wake up one morning and you are too groggy. When you get to that point, decrease the dosage by one milligram and that should be the right dosage for you. Good luck. | | | | | | |

| | What I heard, for individuals who have delayed sleep phase syndrome, which keeps them awake long into the night and delays their wake-up times, taking melatonin may help to establish a more conventional sleep-wake cycle. Although it is not approved in the US as a regular prescription drug, melatonin does have a special orphan drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But must remember, caroll30; people who have depression or bipolar disorder should use it only with the supervision of a health professional. Actually, taking melatonin may increase appetite and lead to weight gain for individuals who lose muscle tissue because they have serious chronic illnesses such as AIDS. Melatonin is broken down in the liver, so individuals who drink large amounts of alcoholic beverages and those with known or suspected liver diseases should avoid taking it. If liver function is diminished, high levels of melatonin could build up in the blood, possibly leading to side effects. Side effects ; Abdominal cramps, Confusion, Depression, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Fatigue, Headache, Irritability, Low blood pressure, Nausea, & Vomiting. | | | | | | |

| | she should go see a doctor to tell her more about it and give her the right dosage to use. Medicin even when natural have consequences in our bodies so it´s always the best to first see a doctor ,talk about our problem, make some exams and then with the diagnosis see the best treatment... and the right treatment depends on every person´s body. Nobody is the same. What works for me may or may not work for you. | | | | | | |

| | Well I do know that it is a chemical produced in your brain and it helps you relax so you can sleep. Apparently the doctor feels her brain is not producing enoug to benefit her and is telling her to suplement it with store bought. I'm sure as long as she stays within the suggested dosage she will be just fine. You can probably get more information on this if you google it. | | | | | | |

| | Yes I did that I am learning quite a bit about it. Seems harmless to me, better than sleeping pills. | | | |

| | I would take care when taking anything for sleeping. When I was in my 20s, I went nearly a week without sleeping during a heatwave. I was getting really stressed until I thought to myself, that it would be better if I stopped worrying about something I couldn't change. I never took anything and eventually fell asleep. Since then I sleep for around 6-7 hours a night, sometimes only 3-4, and I am quite happy with that. I just don't worry, as that makes it worse. I have had clients in my therapy practice that have problems sleeping, some have said they use melatonin, but it hasn't made a difference. With some people it does, but my feelings are that whatever is taken for sleeping can be addictive, even if it's a psychological addiction. I teach my clients meditation, because it has been proved that we get around 80% of the benefits of natural sleep if we meditate, and many people often fall asleep meditating anyway.. :-) Derek | | | | | | |

| | I'm about to take some right now. It definately helps, and does a good job at helping you feel rested without feeling groggy in the morning. My only concern is how safe it is to take long term. My thought is how can something work that well and not be bad for you? I would definately reccommend it for the occasional sleepless stressed out night. | | | | | | |

| | Meletonin is safe to take indefinately. My doctor told me, I had asked him at my last visit, so dont worry you can take it the rest of your life if needed, its a natural hormone we produce at night. Have a great day! | | | |
