Mr_Nightfeather (188) | 11 months ago | I have been in the States and I feel quite uncomfortable when people call me 'Sir'.
Not only do I dislike being called 'Sir' in any case (although accept it from someone who I recognise is trained to do so by their profession), here in the UK, unless it is somewhat justified because there is really a senior-junior relationship, calling someone 'Sir' can be equivocally considered to indicate disrespect - it rather depends on the tone, emphasis and context. Because Americans have a different way of speaking (and I don't mean just accent), 'Sir' in American can sound challenging and possibly uncomplimentary to an Englishman.
I do not believe in the the use of 'Sir' when the person you are speaking to is obviously older than you. I certainly don't believe in it when it's just a random stranger (unless that stranger is a customer or potential customer when, as I say, it is tolerable).
I sometimes wonder whether some Americans genuinely consider it a compliment. It just goes to show that, though we seem to share the same language, there is sometimes a bigger culture gulf than we anticipate.

LadyMarissa (2674) | 11 months ago | I live in the Southern US. I was raised from the day I took my first word that I was rude for not saying Yes Ma'am or Yes Sir. It is "required" for anyone older than me. It's getting harder to find someone older than me now but I've also worked in Customer Service most of my life & it was required there also. Now I find myself saying Yes Sir to someone only 25-30 years old out of habit. I promise that when I visit your country, I'll try my best not to offend you by calling you Sir. If, when you visit mine, you don't expect me to change just because you don't like it. Actually, I feel offended that you're offended at my attempt to show you respect!!!
