Death Cab's genius lyrics  email this discussion to a friend?

Is it Ben who usually writes their songs? Coz I have to tell you, I am just in AWE of some of their song lyrics. It's like, they have this ability to interject really simple daily observations into bigger themes of love, life, change, death, and other profound topics.

Examples: From Lack of Color, "and when I see you, I really see you upside down. but my brain knows better, it picks you up and turns you around..." -- that IS how our vision works. Another one, from Title and Registration, "The glove compartment isn't accurately named and everybody knows it...coz behind this door, there's nothing to keep my fingers warm and all i find are souvenirs from better times.."

Ben Gibbard is a GENIUS. I absolutely love Death Cab. And Postal Service too.

I think Ben does write most of their lyrics...Chris Walla might contribute some, I'm not sure. Considering Chords was actually a solo project (with Chris contributing some of the guitar) and then when it was such a huge success he turned it into a full band with Chris Walla and Nick Hammer. They've had a few different drummers but Ben, Chris and Nick have always been the core.

Plus a lot of DCFC's lyrics are so similar to the Postal Service lyrics in terms of style, meter, word choice, and I know he wrote all of the lyrics for the Postal Service. And you're right, they are amazing! I think my favorite passage, actually from a Postal Service song, is the opening to Such Great Heights: "I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned. And I have to speculate that God himself did make us into corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay." But it's super difficult to pick a favorite lyric from a Death Cab song....there are sooooooooo many to choose from.

oh i love that bit too in Such Great Heights! The one about the freckles and mirrored images! *Sigh* I know! it's really hard to just single out a Death Cab or Postal service song, and even if you manage to do so, it'll still be hard to choose among the brilliant lines contained in that one song. =0 Nothing but ???. =)
