Is she selfish or does she have a point? |
| |
| My morning radio show was talking about this the other day. She had the wife on pleading her case. Tell me what you think. This woman's husband is a huge Steelers fan. His boss, knowing this, to thank him for working so hard, gave him two tickets to the super bowl. Talk about a nice gift! Well, the wife is a teacher who has been laid off since September. She thinks her husband should have sold the tickets because they could use the cash. Now, keep in mind, these were a gift. They would not have had the money anyway, had he not gotten them. Also keep in mind that he was getting them as a gift for all the hard work he's put in. How do you feel about the wife's request? Do you think she's being selfish or do you think she has a right to ask this of him? Whatever your thoughts, why do you feel this way? Do you think it's okay to sell a gift given to you? Do you think it's okay to request that your spouse sell a gift given to him by his boss? | | | | | |

| | Well, while it is a really nice gesture by the boss, is it going to hurt them financially because of travel costs or anything to attend it? My gut instinct says leave the poor man alone, he earned it, but then I don't know how desperate their financial situation is. | | | | | | |

| | I don't think there would be much in travel costs, since the super bowl was in Tampa (I think?) and we're in West Palm Beach. The drive is only a couple of hours. There probably would be food and drink costs, etc, when he got there, but I imagine not more than 50 bucks? I guess I can see if their financial situation is really dire, but it didn't seem so from how she spoke, and he's the one who's been working while she's been laid off. My gut says leave him alone, too, especially knowing he's a die hard Steelers fan. | | | |

| | I do not think this poor man should listen to his wife. He must have been working really hard for his boss to give him this gift. Even though the wife says they could use the money, I would be telling the husband to take a male friend with him amd enjoy the game. The poor man most likely needs a break from his wife for a night. I do not think it right to sell a gift that has been given to you by your boss. For all you know, your boss could have the tickets for the seats next to yours. Then how do you explain to him someone else was in your seats. | | | | | | |

| | That's what I think too, Goodie. What if the boss finds out? If I were the boss and found out my employee sold a gift like that that I gave him, I'd be ticked. It's not like they would have had the money to begin with. Now, if they financial situation were dire, like they were going to lose their house or their car or something, then I'd maybe think differently. | | | |

| | This is one of those rare times when I did not read other people's responses before adding my own because I couldn't decide immediately and didn't want to influence my final decision. And low and behold their is basically the same conclusion I came to. Great minds all think alike I guess. And I suppose if you are in the situation of having the boss wonder why you did not attnd the game... you could always go with the good ole fashioned truth! I know that I would have great respect for a person that would go to that length to provide for his family. I admire his intergtity and work ethic instead of being made he sold the tickets. But let the poor guy go to the game! Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | I think it was selfish. If it was a gift, for her man's hard work, he should get to go if he wants to go. | | | | | | |

| | I think the wife is a selfish cow for even suggesting it. What a terrific gift for a fan to be given by his boss. He obviously deserves the tickets for being a hard worker and a game like that will be one he will always remember. How would the man feel if he sold the tickets and the boss asks him how he enjoyed the game? It would put the man in a very awkward and embarrassing position. I truly hope he goes to the game with someone other than his wife. While others may disagree, I don't think it is right to sell a gift. In the case of an actual item, even if I didn't like it, I would keep it. I might not keep it on display but I would still keep it. | | | | | | |

| | I'm with you... I think she should never have suggested it. Hard to judge their situation while not being in it, but from the fact that were presented on the radio, by her, she sounded rather selfish to me. | | | |

| | I think he should have kept the tickets and she should have been glad for him. Since she has been laid off, he has been carrying the load of making money. It is also something that is once in a lifetime. He will never be able to afford SuperBowl tickets. While I understand her point, I think the husband had every right to keep the tickets and for a few hours forget his worries. | | | | | | |

| | I'm going to have to agree with everyone else that they should just keep the tickets. At least have some fun with it; it's something they wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. | | | | | | |

| | It's not an easy question! If we had it really tight I would sell stuff we didn't need - even if it was a gift. I wouldn't hesitate to sell the tickets if I've gotten them - but that's me. I think it's okay for the wife to do the request, but it's up to the man to dicide if to sell them or go on the trip. Since I don't know how tight their budget is - I can't really say what to do. It might be really tight and she choosing what to buy to eat since they have a tight budget - if so I would be pissed if my husband spent money on a trip even if it was just $10 - that could give my family milk for the whole week *lol* | | | | | | |

| | I can see the wife's view point to an extent, but they were a gift to him for his hard work. Even in hard economic times (or maybe I should say especially in hard economic times) a person needs time to relax and enjoy life for a little while. I don't think the wife's request was selfish. I think she's just too stressed to see anything but practical, and that her husband needs a chance to unwind. | | | | | | |

| | Hi there, I think you are absolutely right. There is some merit to spending wisely and a point at which you need to have fun too, otherwise what is the point of living if you don't enjoy your life once in a while? Happy Mylotting. | | | |

| | Well, first of all... isn't it not kosher to re-sell tickets anyway ? But aside from that.... honestly if this were me and my husband... there would be no way I'd ask him to sell the tickets! I mean... HE WORKED HARD FOR THEM. But, I can understand her side also if they are having money problems, but I still don't agree with it. -Mimz- | | | | | | |

| | Gifts are gifts. Whatever it is, whoever gave it. Selling gifts? Not a good idea. This will hurt the person giving it if only he/she knows, if only he/she knows, why bother giving you another gifts. Let's respect and give value to what effort made by our friends or acquaintances. Presents are still presents. | | | | | | |
