Senate Advances Tax Break for Homebuyers |
| |
| The Senate on Wednesday voted to expand the economic stimulus package with a tax credit for homebuyers of up to $15,000, a provision championed by Republicans as addressing a root cause of the recession. The vote to add the tax credit, at a cost of about $18.5 billiion, came as Senate leaders seemed to be nearing completion of negotiations. The majority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, suggested that a final vote on the stimulus plan could come on Thursday. Moderate lawmakers in both parties are pushing to reduce the overall cost of the measure and to focus it more tightly on provisions that will quickly spur spending and create jobs. President Obama said: "I've heard criticisms of this plan that echo the very same failed theories that helped lead us into this crisis, the notion that tax cuts alone will solve all our problems, that we can ignore the fundamental challenges like energy independance and the high cost of health care and still expect our economy and our country to thrive. I reject that theory, and so did the American people when they went to the polls in November and voted resoundingly for change. So I urge members of Congress to act without delay." The full story: http://www.nytimes.com/20... Agreed Mr. President!! Why keep doing the same things that are tried and true and proven to be failed policies. I was amongst the resounding voters for change and I firmly believe the ideologies and policies of the past need to be overthrown, instead of living in Nixon, Reagan and Bush(s) policies. If those policies worked so well, then we should have made an amendment to the constitution and let Bush run a third term. Which very few would have wanted. And if the constitution and policies were perfect then why have an amendment to begin with. Mr. President please continue to push for change. | | | | | |

| | Except for the fact that tax cuts have helped the economy everytime they have been tried. Kennedy used them in the 60s, Reagan ushered in the longest continuous period of over all growth in our nation's history using them. Clinton was instrumental in triggering a recession by removing them. Bush Jr helped us overcome the assaults on our economy (9-11, Three Hurricanes hitting Florida in the same season and Hurricane Katrina/Rita) using them. Name any tax hike that can claim the same record? Prs. Obama apparently needs to be reminded that, while he did win the election, 47% of the voters did NOT vote for him or his "Blueprint for Change". That doesn't diminish his win or make him any less the President of the United States, but it does mean that the American people did not vote resoundingly for change. I'm also entertained by his Non-sequitor fallacy about tax cuts and changing the US Constitution to allow Prs. Bush to run for another term. Bush used tax cuts, but that doesn't mean he has to be president for them to work. Prs. Obama should continue to push his agenda as he sees fit (within the confines of the US Constitution and his job description of course), but no president should expect a free ride in getting them implemented. He has Pelosi and Reid in his pocket, but apparently when it comes down to it, a lot of Housemembers and Senators are willing to expose a bad bill for what it is. | | | | | | |

| | If it were just fixing the infrastructure, that wold be fine, in fact, I might even support this bill. However, hundreds of billions are going to the very earmarks Obama, Pelosi and Reid insisted wouldn't be in there. How do you justify their support for his bill when they promised there would be no earmarks? | | | |

| | My big problem ( I actually mean HUGE problem) is all the wasteful pork in this bill. It is a lobbyist and special interest group free for all. If they would pull out all the waste I would be more apt to support it. I feel as written this bill is very irresponsible. | | | | | | |

| | This tax break has accutally changed. The tax credit now is 10% of the house value up to $8000 but their is a stipulation you have to be a first time homeowner and there is income restrictions if you make over a certain amount you are not qualified. We will be first time homebuyers this year so will qualify for the credit. | | | | | | |
