Would You Use This?  

I should tell you that usually filing taxes with a lot of these online companies are not free. They always charge you for filing your state taxes. I have been using Turbo Tax for around 4 years or so. I think the first year my federal taxes were free, but now I have to pay. They charge on how in-depth you go. If you use just the simple plan it is less than if you try to find all your deductions, etc. I hope that my records don't get hacked into, but I just feel that it costs less for me to do it this way than go to an accountant. We use an accountant. We have our appointment this Sat, he sits down with us and does there right then and there. We take all our info with us, answer any questions, he fills it all out, we pay him and take our taxes to mail. It's been less than $100 so far. We never have enough to itemize, but this year we will have all the adoption info to add to it, so it may be a bit more.

We used to use this local guy but he is really slow. You give all the stuff to him and hope you don't have to file an extension. The year his computer crashed we never heard a word from them. We started calling and their answering machine was picking up saying the computer was crashed and he would be filing automatic extentions for everyone. We never did get a courtesy phone call and always had to do all the calling ourselves. That's just NOT the way to do business, especially if you want people to use you locally. You have to have customer service to compete with the larger businesses.

Our local phone company has a monopoly in this area yet they have the best customer service. If I call them they are usually out within 15 min, I kid you not. The latest has been same day service. Yesterday the gal called to tell me that because of something with our bill my next bill would be more than I would normally pay. She just called because she didn't want me to be suprised by the amount. I thought that was really nice.

Ah yes, tax time...when the Infernal Revenue Service helps take a bite out of us.

I've always done my own taxes (when I filed them) because I am dumb.

But they have never questioned my math, and I've always got a good chunk of change back and never had to pay in.

Last year I worked for cash, so I ain't filing this year; plus, the amount I earned was pretty small because I lost so much work while trying to get my hernia operation done so I don't have to file this year.

Well, first off let me say, didn't know you were from the great white north(east) lol. I've only lived in Pa 4 years. Anyway, I do my taxes with TurboTax. I have for the past 3 years and I have had no problems doing it through them. And my refund is then direct deposited into my account.

I've never used TaxAct. But I have used Turbo Tax for many years now when doing my own taxes. They also offer free federal filing with them.

So right, Dear Friend! I worry about the accountant e-filing, too. It can't really be avoided, and we have to hope the secure sites are really secure, but they do make me nervous. IRS has said they are in the process of doing away with paper filing altogether, so there will be no choice but to file online. Welcome to the Twilight Zone, where figments of Rod Serling's imagination are scrambling names, numbers and zip codes so Trump's Toupee will receive approximately $8 billion in refunds and I'll owe $17 million for this year!

i paid taxes for 33 years RJ. I haven't paid a bean since November 9 2007. Of course were I to return to work then matters would change. But no income equals no tax. Personally I would always prefer a real live person, even if he were in Pennsylvania, over a computer system when it comes to something as personal as my contribution to the salaries of the members of my country's government. But that's more because I like to know who I am dealing with than paranoia about identity theft. There's so much about me out there already that I kind of suspect that another set of folk knowing won't be such a great risk.

I have always used taxact and when I was ready to file, it used to cost something like $14.95. Now there are different prices for certain filings, and they request you to update if you want a question answered, that used to be free.
I am going to owe a lot in taxes this year, have no idea where the money is going to come from.
I wonder if I would get a break like the politicians did who did not file taxes?

I haven't used Tax Act, but another site, and I had no problem. (I've used it the last two years and now I can't remember which one it is, I'd better remember soon!) Make sure you go to the irs.gov web site and choose one from their list, and use their links. You can find a few that are free. Some of them do charge for the state taxes, but the site I picked did not charge, though I think it may depend on your state.

I never pay anyone to do my taxes, but then I don't make a lot of money, am single, no kids, and own no property, so it is easy enough to do myself. The web sites make it even easier. If you are worried about your account numbers, you don't have to do direct deposit, then you do not have to reveal that information.

I just got the last thing I needed, one W-2 form which they ALWAYS send at the last minute, so I need to get to work on my taxes now, too.
