Is there anybody out there who thinks car alarms serve any purpose?

I hate car alarms. They go off for no reason whatsoever. You walk past them in a car park - the alarm goes off. A cat walks past - the alarm goes off. They usually go off when the owners are nowhere in sight, or even worse away for the day. Nobody takes any notice of them, in fact if you hear one go off you're more likely to try and get away from it. I feel so sorry for people trying to sleep, and people with babies when they've just got them off to sleep.

Criminals, by nature, want to draw the least amount of attention to themselves as possible so, in that sense, I believe that car alarms are valuable protection. No car thief is going to continue working on a car with it's alarm blaring...the risk of being questioned and caught is increased. I do understand how annoying it is when an alarm goes off for no reason but I'm one of those folks who does look when I hear one going off and I'm sure there are more like me. Most newer alarms will only sound for a short period of time if the vehicle is left alone after it's initially set off so it won't be blaring for hours.

They just cause a bunch of noise pollution. I don't know if they deter thieves are not but they sure make a lot of noise. Mine would go of if someone walked near the car or a ball bounced near it. Sometimes even when a loud truck road by it would go off. So I just had to turn that thing off.

I've often wondered the same thing. No one ever stops to see why a car alarm goes off. If you're in store then you have no clue that your car is being broken into so what's the point?

Sure they serve a purpose. The purpose is to bring attention to the vehicle that has the alarm. Usually if a car is being tampered with then it causes a noisy environment for the criminal to concentrate on stealing the car. If the owner happens to hear the alarm in those moments when a criminal is attempting to steal then yes, they have the right to protect their property. It becomes difficult to keep anything safe in this day and time. That is why, I pray for God's divine protection of my family and my personal belongings. I do use the natural wisdom that is given to us as a result concerning using alarms etc... They do serve a purpose. I used to live in a complex where the neighbors alarms kept going off and yes it was an annoying disturbance. But I understood it's purpose and didn't think much else of it. I wouldn't be upset for someone trying to keep the personal belongings safe. I don't anyone else should get upset either. But I do completely understand your view point. I do empathize with those neighbors that do get completely annoyed by these sort of alarms. All in all it gives us more opportunity to pray for people.

They help you protect your car from theft. It is the only other security besides car locks. Thief will always be scared from stealing a car that has alarm installed than any other car.

Maybe if you lived in the middle of nowhere and somebody tried to break into your car, other than that no there is really not any purpose in my eyes.
