Is the film/play 'Brigadoon' just a story?

I was wondering if 'Brigadoon' is just a story that was made up or if there's an element of fact or legend in it at all.
Was there a town of 'Brigadoon', if so what happened to it and why?

I think there is an element of legend from various countries. I do know Scotland once had a legend of a disappearing village. It's a lovely film/play though is Panda mums group doing it?
