oh my God... |
|
This is a common expression when we get shocked or get taken aback by some incident or accident. Even when we are too surprised or express our disliking etc. we often say " Oh my god". Now interestingly some people ask why an atheist or a heretic too utters like this? The answer I find is it has nothing to do if one is theist or atheist or religious or irreligious. This is just an expression like any other expression like - 'gush', 'my Lord',my my' and similar others. They do not carry the denotation that is usually tagged with them. I think I could explain it. there could be still more to add. please do add....

1. vishwaskg (382) | 10 months ago | You are very right about that, but i feel Atheist may not believe in God,which others believe in,but somewhere inside they do carry some faith for something,,,, but which they dont believe its God,which the rest of believe it as,
Also too some extent, even God believers, dont actually refer t o God, they have that by reflexes...
All in all i would say that Oh my God is just a word of Shocking Expression
Cheers Vishwas

krajibg (2504) | 10 months ago | Hi Vishwah!, you are correct. Though the atheist s do not show their belief in God, inwardly somewhere inside their mind they do feel it.
Thanks a lot for the response.

2. dragon54u (9441) | 10 months ago | I say that occasionally but wanted to break the habit so started saying "good heavens" and "my goodness". In a few days I had broken the habit and I think it sounds much better. I reserve "my God!" for truly tragic incidents or, more rarely, when I'm scared.

krajibg (2504) | 10 months ago | Yeah, you are correct. This is like the second Nature. You try to get rid of it but it bounces back. But there is no harm expressing your mind anyway you feel nicer. But for me 'oh my god' is more common even if I am not talking English. funny, is not it?
Thanks for responding...

krajibg (2504) | 10 months ago | Ha ha ha its funny indeed. Take it on me as well. I too am an atheist but my first expression of shock and pain is 'oh my God'. Might be your brother when he says' Jesus H. Christ' by the 'H' he refers to 'Holy'. or he knows it better. Ya it does not sound nice but it is a habit and to erase out your habit is a difficult job.
Thanks for your response....

krajibg (2504) | 10 months ago | Yeah, you are correct. Earlier I used to wonder why people who are hard core atheist utter 'my god' and it was later realisation that it was nothing but an expression and has no relation with one's being religious or non religious.
Thanks a lot for the nice response.

6. scorpio19 (657) | 10 months ago | Hi krajibg,
Yes it is used as just an expression and not meant to be anything bad against religion, I don't normally use it I say "oh dear" or something much worse..lol...but my children say it alot and I always say, don't say it but they do.

8. Sreekala (1658) | 10 months ago | Hi Krajibg,
I agree with you. It is a common expression used by many. But I can't agree the atheist also using the same expression, how can they? Usually I am changing the expressions according to the situations. In case of some accidents or death happens then my possible expression will be ‘Oh my God’ because I believe that these incidents can control only by GOD. If something happens by the foolish act of human my expression will be ‘what a pity’.

krajibg (2504) | 10 months ago | Hi Sreekala,
You are right. though this is mere an expression the atheist should be careful not to utter the name of God. You have a logic.
Though late thanks for your response.
