Darcy is not simply proud because of vanity, nor is he is prejudice without merit. Wickham's shameless treatment of Darcy's sister deemed his prejudice needed. Elizabeth's pride slowly dissolves, especially when she realizes that it is Darcy who bails out Kitty who runs off with Wickham, by forcing Wickham to marry her so as not to cause ruin to the other Bennet girls.
I think there are many reasons this book is worthy of discussion. It marks a pivotal point in history for women in England.

I think that a lot of this story is how people interact with each other. I personally think that some societies today act in similar ways as they did back then. For instance, I'm sure that there are several people who misread people, like Elizabeth misreads Mr. Darcy, at the beginning of the novel. It shows us that it happens that we can be completely wrong about people.

The characters depict the problems of the moment in two social classes that Austen manages to show vividly. In all her novel the eye is set in the gentlefolk and the nobility of her era.
