The power of the mind.....hoax or not? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life11 months ago

I have been having a time with some things lately and have been getting some great adivce here from friends that keep reminding me of what I already know. That point is that you and only you can make your life better.
I know a lot of us here on MyLot are here not just because of the great debates and wonderful conversations that we have; the lasting friendships but because we're broke!
So we as humans have the power to fix our problems with the right attitude.
I know that sounds like hooey to a lot of people but I have actually seen and heard of many cases of this being true.
One of my favorite stories came from a series of books called "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and it talks about a woman who was diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer.
She had three small girls that she was raising herself and when she heard the news she just smiled at her doctor. She told him he was not only wrong about when she would die but that she would dance at her youngest girls wedding.
Well as the story goes she DOES live to dance at her daughters wedding.
Which leads me to my point. We ALL have the ability to heal, to get financially solvent, to be emotionally, physically happy. We just have to want it and want to believe it can happen!
Some experts call this the power of positive thinking. I call it faith.....
So do you believe in this? And if not why not? Have you tried it...I mean really tried it?
And if you DO believe that by believing you can achieve what you want do you have a story?
Let us all know!! We could all use a little good news in these stressful times!

I don't think that it is a hoax. I believe fully that we choose how our lives go. In bad situations we can see them as one door closing, but another door opening or can choose to see all doors closes which leads to negative thinking. I think that we choose whether to be positive or negative and this has multiple effects on our lives. I believe in law of attraction. I lived negative for many years before discovering the this and I have tried it for many months now and I can honestly say that it works.

That's wonderful Bailey!
I am happy you are on the path to better health and a better life!
I wish more of us would actually do this....including me I'm afraid. I AM trying though....still a student of life!

Many years ago (divorce time) I was stumbling all over myself, overcome with sooo much negativity that even the sunshine was grey! One day, for whatever reason, I had an epiphany....faith or? From that day forward (believe me) I was guided to look for the positive in everything, and my whole life changed! Now I know I can...accomplish/achieve a truly quality life! I believe, faith gave me power of mind!

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

Pergammano,
That is wonderful! I too have had that kind of thing in my life. I think that if we took the time to really listen to our inner self or even listen to our faith we would all do better don't you think?

myLot reputation of 97/100. pergammano (2001)   ranked 2,268 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

It worked for me, but I guess I would have to say, it may not work for those that are half-heartedly committed! A big thing for me was blame...everyone else, BUT me....when I cleared the cob-webs at looked at that hurdle...it was really a matter of "cause & effect." And I could control both of those things...a major change of attitude..."door is half open, door is half closed"....so you are, "bang on" m'dear...Faith gave me the courage to be a positive person!

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

Pergammano,
That is sooo cool....you recogized that you might be part of the problem and changing was the solution.
Do you know how many millions of people have not reached that conclusion in their own life! Congradulations my friend! You are in an elite group of self aware people and I commend you for your forthright attitude!

I think we have great ability to get through things because our minds play into it. We may not be able to be Bill Gates rich but we can get that bill paid. I didn't get rid of my health issues but I can and do keep them in check.

Will power, positive thinking, what ever you want to call it, is what moves mountains. It's what can change a moment or history.

Faith.... yep, good word.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

I think it's more than willpower TL,
I believe that all things are possible; even a cure for your ills and your finances if you wish.
Do I have that kind of faith? I'm working on it but I do believe it exists; because I have seen it many times.
I wish you all the best and hope that the next time we meet here on MyLot you are doing better with your health issues.

It works in another way as well if you believe in this sort of thing. I have often read that where I am and who I am is all the result of my thoughts and actions thus far in my life. That's fairly easy to accept if you think about it and I can go along with it.

What I don't understand is....take a young person who has a sick heart and needs a transplant...or a child with leukemia.....or infants born with horrid disabilities. What about the victims of crime....people who are murdered or raped or victims of car accidents where they are not at fault....how is their life the result of what they have thought about????

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

I understand what you are saying but I'll just try to put it to you this way.
My mom died when I was nine. I had three older half siblings and three younger siblings and a father that was an alcoholic.
He wasn't able to care for us so we were parceled out to relatives with the four of us younger kids going to his parents and our older siblings going with an aunt and uncle.
We were not able to see our other siblings for many years and we had a very different life than before.
NO it wasn't easy and no it wasn't what our parents would have wanted for their kids but I have to say that we are all very, very close now and we are all extremely strong people. In our family we have a teacher, a business contractor, a social worker, a wedding designer(me), a court transcriber, a bank loan officer and a civil engineer.
I don't think that our parents would have ever seen this if they would have been in charge of our lives. As wonderful as our parents were they had problems....lots of them.
So do you think this was just coincedence or do you think it was God's providence that we were made to go a different way.
I really do think that God had/has a plan for us all and I think that faith did this.
I also think that our positive attitudes of loving each other and respecting our family values also helped.
You can say what you will but I think that the choices we make really DO affect everything and everyone around us.
No we didin't ask for this to happen and I will miss my mom and dad til the day I die and get to see them again but I think God wanted something better for us kids than what we would have gotten with them here on earth.....

myLot reputation of 92/100. MsTickle (8954)   ranked 857 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

So you are saying it's God's will and your positive attitudes that got you where you are? Then why isn't everyone in the same boat...why are there sick babies and children, why does God save some and not others? Why are the prayers of some answered but not others?

There is a member here who has been having a rough time of things for months now. Her Mum got sick and was near death and also her Dad. Her Mum has had accidents and complications and there have been pets that were lost and injured and sick and family members who were doing wrong by the family and through it all this lady gives her all to her family...she helps out physically, doing work that sounds exhausting...not once, but over and over. She runs back and forth in spite of her own disabilities and illness to help and rally her family. She uses her own money to help out and her husband is there all the way in spite of illness and death in his own family. She gets very little thanks but is always up and ready for the next task or trial that presents itself. How does your theory work in her case? She has a very positive attitude, she is full of love and is always giving to her family but with every steo forward there seems to be 2 steps backward. This lady has such patience (most of the time, lol) and resilience she just amazes me? Doesn't she deserve a break?

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

Actually she does deserve a break. This is not something I can answer as to why we have to go through seemingly tough things in life. I surely wouldn't have wanted to go through what I have in my life but I will tell you that I know I'm a better person for having gone through these things.
I am reminded of a story about how a bunch of people got angry at God for having to bear the crosses that they have had to carry and so he told everyone that this was a resonable problem and for all of them that were upset to pile their crosses in a pile.
Then he told them to go and pick another one out from the pile and stand in front of him.
The people looked at the pile of crosses and picked one they liked better and went to stand in front of God and then he said " Is everyone happy now?" and they all said yes, they were much happier with this cross. He then told them to look at the bottom of the cross and see the name on it.
On the bottom of the cross was a name....their name. They had all picked up their origanal cross. The moral of the story is to tell us that God only gives us a cross that we can carry...not smaller or bigger than we can manage.
I like that story because I think that he gives only very strong people hard lives and he knows when we do this that we are going to bear this cross with style and grace. I hope I can keep doing just that and am proud to be one of the chosen ones.
I will be honest enough to tell you that I am human and as one am sometimes wishing that I Wasn't one.....it would be nice to have a quiet little boring middle class life and a comfortable way through life.....

myLot reputation of 92/100. MsTickle (8954)   ranked 857 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

Yes I've always liked that story and I could certainly relate to it. However I don't feel stronger or better for bearing my crosses. I'm tired. I'm tired of trying and falling down and getting up and trying again and falling down and getting up. I'm tired of being on my own and feeling like a misfit, the square peg in the round hole the odd one out. Who am I supposed to be? What am I doing here? What am I supposedto be doing here? I'm finding everything a bit meaningless just between you and I.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

I have to admit that I am kind of in this area too. That is why I am on this quest for knowledge. I am taking classes to become a Master Herbalist and one of the lessons that they teach is this....that we all have this ability to be healthy, happy and well adjusted.
I have had some wonderful results in my own life with this attitude change and I am now trying to apply it for others so that I might be able to help them "help themselves" so to speak.
I recommend going through your life and seeing what is really bugging you...health issues, money issues, or whatever and to take steps to alter them.
I know that sounds contrite and it isn't meant to be. But the truth is...only we have the ablility to change ourselves and our lives and with faith and confidence we CAN do this.
I will pray for you Ms Tickle, I will pray that you find what you are looking for and that you find the happiness you deserve!

I think I may have omitted to mention in our discussion here that I actually agree with the "Law of Attraction". It has worked for me on several occasions and in big ways. I don't feel I am in control of it however...not like some people are. I can visualise a thing, think of it with every fibre of my being so it becomes a part of me and believe in it but it does not come to pass like I want it to. So I haven't yet figured out the finer points it seems. I once read in a Readers Digest that you could think yourself thin...my weight was not a big issue then, I was active, healthy, gorgeous but I began to think of myself as sleeker and I actually dropped some weight and began to look as I imagined. Of course...I'm unable to do that now no matter how much I try....lol. cry.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

I think that it's because your sabataging yourself with doubt.
I do think a check up with a Master Herbalist or an Iridologist is just the thing.
You might have some underlying mental things going on like grief or fear that are an issue. I know that flower essances are great to treat that!
My sis in law was having a serious sinus thing and she was very faithful with herbs and they weren't working very well. I told her to mention to our herbalist about her son's death in a car accident 18 years ago. Our herbalist put her on "Star of Bethlahem" essance and she is MUCH better!
The herbalist said that when we don't grieve proberly our body can actually make you sniff constantly....an unconscious way of "crying". This can cause sinus trouble! I know it sounds a little out there but it sure worked on Marlene and I was amazed!
See what you can do.....I know it's hard with money and everything but what's the cost of a heart attack or diabetes!?

The mind is powerful and it is very simple to demonstrate. Look at any unsuccessful person and talk to him. He is sure to tell you that he will not succeed because of this and that reason. He rarely mentions how he can become successful. He is trapped in his unsuccessful mind. Cheers!!!

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

Exactly!
I think we actually talk ourselves into a lot of the situations that we are in by our own attitude and our own negativity!
I think we can do better most of the time...that means me too. I catch myself saying things like I will never be able to do this or that and then I realize I've already talked myself out of even trying before I started@

It is why I like auyvedic medicine. Our mind is our own best medicine chest, as Deepak Chopra likes to say. We all have this ability to heal ourselves in all situations, if we allow ourselves to. I also believe that Transcendental Meditation daily, twice, helps us to achieve the ability to do so. I know that there have been many times in my life that it was the mind that healed me rather then medications, and so forth. It is definately not a hoax.

I have been working with herbs and other alternative treatments and have had wonderful results!
All I can say to the non believers is to just try it with an open heart and mind and see what happens!

Hi hornswaggled, Thanks for an excellent discussion and I completely agree with you. We only have to look around us to see the evidence of this. Positive thinking, or whatever you want to call it works wonders, but so does negative thinking. It all depends on ourselves and some people love to talk about how sick they are, or how much they hate their job etc., then wonder why it's always that way! It works the same way for the person who looks on the bright side and they are the people that we love having around. Attitude does make all the difference and yes we can work though our financial problems better that way and even heal our bodies. I don't think there is really any limit to the power of the mind. By the way, I have also read some of the Chicken Soup books and my wife has read most of them, excellent reading in most cases. Blessings.

Thanks Pose,
I do love those books! I agree that this power we have does work both ways and it is a very powerful energy.
So if we want to achieve something we really need to keep that in mind when we are thinking what it is that we do want.
Now I know that some people have actually tried this and it didn't work for them but you have to have the right frame of mind and you have to want something that is good....not wishing evil on someone else or wishing for something that isn't good for you....because the powers that be do know what you need and won't let you do the wrong thing for yourself or others.

i don't know whether it is a hoax or not... and i don't really believe it 100%... i believe in God more than the power of my own mind as He is the one who has total control of my life and i depend on Him totally to guide and lead my life... this is only my opinion though... take care and have a nice day...

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

Hello Lingli,
I think you have the wrong idea of what I am saying....I didn't say that it Wasn't from Him. I totally believe that the power of the mind is something that God gave us all. He wants us to take care of ourselves and to think positive thoughts don't you? And weren't we made in his image? So don't you think it stands to reason that this is a gift of God?
I really do or I wouldn't believe it. I believe that all things come from God and this gift of healing is God's gift to us.
It is up to us to use it wisely and to do it with a pure heart. I don't think we would get very far if we asked to be the richest person on earth or to slay people we don't like. But he is always with us and he works through us....

The power of mind is really working in each and every one of us. It is just a matter of believing on it and using it to its fullest potential. My mind works for me well. I can decide, believe and act whatever is on my mind. I am in full control of it.

Actually, we can fix the situations that we are in, the only problem is that it takes a lot of work. Meaning we have to really be willing to work mentally and physically for what we want. Luck is also a large factor, you can be smart and physically fit, but if you are not lucky, then you do not have much of anything.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1954)   ranked 700 out of 38,357 in life  11 months ago

I'm not much for believing in luck. I think we are predestined for some things and I believe we make our own luck with attitude and perseverence and hard work.
