New Type of Tire |
| |
| This probably belongs elsewhere, in "technology", but I just learned about a new type of car-tire, the "next generation", which are supposedly manufactured by Michelin at the South Carolina plant, and which were allegedly at at the Philadelphia Auto Show. These are "see-through" tires, as you can perceive from the pic below, and the "spokes" are all one piece with the rubber from the outside wrap! Naturally, they are "airless", which means that the Police better come up with something other than the spike strips to stop speeding getaways. The way I see it, somebody came up with these on account that most gas stations don't have air-pumps anymore (people steal their hoses), or else they charge for it if they do.! The greatest advantage of all seem to be less likelyhood of flats.! What do you think.? I wonder what the cost will be and how the ride will feel. | | | | | |

| | hmmmm...see through tires that do not need any air in there. this is great! this really sounds great. i am trying to imagine how would it look like. most probably, it will take sometime before i can have a look at it as i live at a considerable distance from where it is being displayed right now. i hope that this is really a good breakthrough akin tyres. the ones that we are using now, they cause us so much troubles with dealing about flats. you are right though that we will have our doubts as to how the rides will be. we know that if the tires are much too filled with air, it gets to be a bumpy ride. i hope that they have already dealt with this aspect. | | | | | | |

| | yes, the first ones that get available in the market needs to be improved yet. that is always how it is with new things that goes in the market. aside from this, the first ones are also priced much higher. however, we can be sure that the ones who always wants to be among the firsts, will be reserving the very first ones that goes out in the market. this is how it always happens, right mechanic. it is good that you are able to get that photo in now. many thanks for the effort. | | | |

| | WEIRD! That's the first word that popped into my head when I saw the picture! They look like they belong more on mopeds or bicycles than on cars. They don't look like they could support the weight of a car, van, SUV or pickup truck. But, we all know about bumble bees, right? Theoretically, bumble bees should NOT be able to fly, yet they do! I guess this tire is similar. What in the world are those spokes made of? I'd want to know how long the tires would last and how the ride will feel more than how much they'd cost. I'd want to know the technological side of them... how much testing was done, why this type of material works so well (assuming it does), etc. Would they lower our insurance rates since there would be no chance of getting a flat front tire which could lead to an accident? Yeah, I'd have a lot of questions that would have to be answered to my satisfaction before I'd ever give them a try. How long they'd be good for would be my biggest question. Changing tires is just not my thing, ya know? Interesting, though. Thanks for the brain stimulation!!! | | | | | | |

| | Technology, love.! That's technology for you. Let's not forget that there are such things as solid spares that are not recomended for higher speeds or long distances. Those were probably the guinea pigs. Let's also remember that according to the announcement, it is noone other than Michelin(!) Ahh! The wonder of it all. What about how good the traction? That's another question, especially since the spokes and the "tread" should be the same composite, right? And how are they fixed to the rims? Yeah, I'm VERY curious as well.! | | | |

| | Oh, right, traction! That would be a kinda important thing, too, wouldn't it? It would suck if we needed to get new axils or whatever it is that the tires attach to. Now, you've got me very curious about these things. I'm just gonna have to do some investigating! (After all, I have nothing ELSE going on in my life at the moment, right? ) Your response below mine almost had me giggling. It brought back a rather fond memory. Those hydraulic "jumping" cars! I was driving somewhere once, waiting for a red light to change when this idiot in front of me started doing all his litte 'tricks' to impress everyone (well, they THINK they're impressing everyone). The light had just turned green and I think maybe he pressed the wrong button or something because his car started jumping all over the place as he started moving forward. IMMEDIATELY, from behind me, a police car's lights started flashing like crazy and off he went after the idiot in his idiotmobile. (Those things are illegal on public streets.) I just had to shake my head in amazement at just how stupid some people can be. Thanks for the memory Of Candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine The Parthenon and moments on the Hudson River Line How lovely it was! (I couldn't find a sound clip so the written words will just have to be good enough. That song just popped right into my head. I'll probably be singing that all day now. LOL) | | | |

| | looks a little precarious to me. a little scary. it doesn't seem to be made of much, looks easy to break. i wouldnt mind it in town but i would be terrified to drive it on the interstate. it would be nice though not to have to worry about losing tread adn going flat but it looks like we may have to worry about it breaking in general. and it would probably be hugely expensive. | | | | | | |

| | It's a mystery to me, really. I would think that the material for the spokes would be too rigid for the treads, and traction would be lacking, so we just have to wait and see. Cost will initially be excessive, I'm sure, but you know those types that just care about the looks will pay anything! | | | |

| | Cool, I like the idea, I'd try them in a heartbeat. I wonder though what it does for gas mileage. I'd assume it would stay at a steady rate, but I know that under/over inflation of tires affects your gas mileage. With these you'd have no more "blowouts" which can cause serious and deadly accidents. But you're right it would hamper the police use of stop sticks. | | | | | | |

| | Wow, you were lucky! I don't remember what mine were...my blowout happened 30 years ago. What I do remember is this incredible pull. Fortunately there was no one next to me because the car pulled across 2 lanes of traffic before I got it stopped. It was scary! | | | |

| | NO doubt, it's an amazing interesting design. What I read is that there were only two at the expo, so we may have to wait a while for the real thing. I'm eager to find and the more I look at them the more questions I have. | | | |
