1. brokentia (7815) | 4 years ago | LOL No! Now why would I have a nice day just because someone told me to? I am not really one to do something a stranger told me to do. If I were, I would be in alot of trouble!

2. Aeval39 (540) | 4 years ago | LOL No! And here half the time, no one even bothers to say that. My friend makes sure to always tell THEM to have a nice day before they can say anything. It's funny to see their reactions.

3. hellparadiso (245) | 4 years ago | Supermarket clerks do tell me to have a nice day, and I say "you too." However, I don't believe that they really mean it, so I assume they don't believe I really mean it. Whether someone wishes me a good day or not has nothing to do with the day that I have. Now, if someone says somnething like "have a fantastic day" or "have an amazing day," then I might pay a bit more attention. It's all about the effort behind it.

8. Danniet (272) | 4 years ago | No, I usually don't but this discussion made me think of today. I was having lunch with my hubby and son and there was a mildly retarded man sitting behind us. This place is small and cramped. So I heard this man say to another " oh excuse me am I in your way" and the man responded in disgust " well you're not since you moved" My heart was breaking and I so wanted to slap that guy. I bit my tongue and when they left I discussed with my husband how mean and disrespectful that was. Alright the end of the story is, as I got up to leave that disabled gentleman looked up at me with the brightest smile I have ever seen and said " you have a nice day" and I almost cried. Sappy, I know but I did make it a point to have a nice day.

9. Asylum (3402) | 4 years ago | On the contrary, it really annoys me when a shop assistant or person at the supermarket checkout says "Have a nice day". I live in the UK and this is an american phrase, so it has no reason to be used here. Do not misunderstand, I mean no disrespect for the United States and if I was ever fortunate enough to visit I would expect to hear the phrase, but as an englishman I expect my fellow countrymen to speak english.
| |
| |
shoreboy31 (348) | 4 years ago | Is "Have a nice day" not english? it doesn't sound like french, german, or spanish to me...so what exactly do grocery clerks say over there?
| |
browneyes (392) | 4 years ago | how about something like cherrio.. LOL
| |
juliedee (1992) | 4 years ago | I'm in the Uk too and people don't say have a nice day very often - it's just not what we say in the UK. We say things like See you later.
| |
shoreboy31 (348) | 4 years ago | oh OK I see now...that makes sense...
| |
Asylum (3402) | 4 years ago | It consists of english words but the phrase itself is american. We would tend to say Bye or even Good Night if it was evening. If an american came to Britain and used the term then I would consider it normal, but from an english person it sounds totally false. However, there is a growing trend for companies to insist on their staff using it.

shoreboy31 (348) | 4 years ago | I never realized that the differences in our cultures ran that deeply...very insightful...I've learned something today...
| |
Asylum (3402) | 4 years ago | I do not think we are very different, but I remember that wonderful phrase of "Two countries divided by a single language" which describes so well the way that our use of english has developed seperately. As I said before I mean no disrespect to your culture but it does not sound right here. Imagine someone in your town saying "Tally ho old bean" to people. It would sound so false.
| |
shoreboy31 (348) | 4 years ago | It would definitely make me give them a second look...that's for sure...lol...no disrespect taken...
