Would you ever be able to forgive someone for this?

I was watching this television show where they asked this woman "Could you ever forgive the man who almost killed your son in a car accident?"
The woman said absolutely not. And then suddenly, the man who had done so, appeared. He apologized and said he was worried about her son (her son was in the audience) and had always wondered if he was all right and what had happened to him and he has been on the driver's mind since and that he really is sorry from the bottom of his heart.
The son then walked up to him and said something like, "Listen; everything happens for a reason and it's ok" and then the two embrace and hug. The mother than says "If everything you said was true, I most certainly do forgive you from the bottom of my heart." And then the mother and this man hug.

I found this very touching. And it really made me think. Drivers who cause other people to be victims are not all necessarily bad people. They just happened to make a wrong turn, overlooked something, etc. If these drivers really are good people, it must be very hard for them to live with themselves.
I am not saying that the victim I cannot empathize with; but I can see where both are coming from.

What are your thoughts? Would you be able to forgive this man?
I personally, found it very admirable what the mother and son had said and done. I cannot say if I would have done the same; but what they did was really touching.
