When Schools Have No Money for Supplies... |
|
When schools have no money for textbooks, folks always feel pity for the students. And they should. But what about the teachers? Teachers need resources from which to teach. Where there are no resources, teachers must spend personal expense to purchase textbooks or materials or teachers must create their own. Talk about time consuming!
It's not just the lesson material; it's also the testing materials, and the time it takes to gather and produce the materials. Teachers are hit hard when there is no money at the district or local level for supplies. And teachers are serious about not wanting to break copyright law by copying off more than permitted by law. Then also, teachers have limits placed on them concerning number of copies allowed on the copier per year. Can teachers ever win?

1. sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | This is ridiculous. Why school would not have money supplies? If there is no money then the school will be closed, that's it. I mean if the teachers had to pay from their own pocket to run the school, how can they earn and live?

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | It happens, trust me. Schools run short in budgets and what gets cut are budgets, ones that cover supplies, etc. I know several teachers who buy their own supplies so that they have them. Better to pay for their own, than to do without. I can also speak from experience on this one. I've purchased things for the classroom myself because of lack of budget.

|
sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | OMG, how did you manage to do it? I mean if there is no budget then how do you get salary? It must be more than difficult, isn't it?
I din't know that beforehand.
So, don't you ever complain to the authority about it that the budget is low and you need more money for it?
| |
|
|
Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | Keeping the job is often more important than complaining or making waves. Plus it does take time to clean things through a budget. That's why teachers often handle their own classroom needs themselves.

sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | I am sorry. I didn't know that. I usually blamed my teachers in my school time that they were so rude at me. I never got compliment from my Language teacher and he was my worst enemy at that time.
Today, I want to say sorry to him.
Have a happy and tension free life. It was nice chatting with you.

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | There is no excuse for rudeness by a teacher. Good teachers are not rude. If you had a rude teacher, it might be worth finding out what motivated him to act that way. I've known many teachers in my life, and I am one. Teachers are allowed to get discouraged, depressed, anxious, and frustrated, but professionals don't go around being rude. I hope you are ok from that childhood ordeal?

|
sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | No, I was very afraid from that teacher. He was very rude and I was beaten by him just because I didn't brought the book he wanted me to buy!
These days, students have guns in their pocket so now the teachers arr not that rude. Then again we see teacher poking pen in student's eyes!

|
|
Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | You have a lot to offer from the student's point of view. I am sorry you had this happen to you as a kid.
And it is interesting that you say kids are carrying guns. Maybe teachers should be more concerned.

sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | Yes, I read it from a news paper that one guy was cheating in an examination hall with a gun on his table and no one stopped him from cheating in an examination.
With all the terror thing shown in the TV, students are getting distracted. In my time we used to worship our teachers.

|
Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | That's a bit scary. I wouldn't bother him either.

sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | Once I had a chance to be a teacher in my life and I gave tutions to two children. One of the child was very sober and another was opposite of it. I found it very difficult teaching the second one. I had to do it because he was my landlord's son. Then on I couldn't get the confidence of teaching children and I got an offer of being a teacher last year but didn't accept it because of the fear I have from that guy.
I was not scared of gunz and bullets but I couldn't made him understand what I taught him. It was difficult making him understand that 4*4 become 16(this is an example, he was reading in 9th standard).

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | Not everyone has the knack of tutoring. But that doesn't mean you can't teach a classroom if hired.
| |
|
|
sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | May be I am not made to teach the whole class. Think, if I can't handle one guy, How am I supose to handle a bunch of class?
I thikn the principle would kick me out of his school after my first day performance!

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | We really need to know ourselves. I was trained as a classroom teacher, but found my niche tutoring. Classroom teaching was not for me. I learned it early. If it's not for you, you have other skills and talents.
| |
|
|
sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | yea, it could be. I always that teaching is an art. I have many good teachers who have the ability to catch interests and teach their own subject according to their interests. I don't think I have the patience to capture every student's interest! My mom says that I am good teacher(surprising for me).
| |
|
|
Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | If your mom sees it in you, then you probably have the talent. Maybe you might develop it more.

sanuanu (3903) | 10 months ago | I m 27 years old! do you think I can still manage to learn something and develop. I am too old to learn anything.

2. elysium (149) | 10 months ago | The only way teachers ever win is if they use their own money to supply each student. That is a hard thing to do since the money to supply the students outweighs a teacher's salary. Two things that teachers can do is ask students for donations and ask the principal if it is possible to purchase a few things for the students and the classroom.

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | Sometimes I think it pays to let parents know what a teacher's budget looks like. There might be some school district changes after that knowledge became public knowledge. Hopefully the change would be a bigger budget and not a teacher in trouble for letting the word out.
I personally know a computer teacher who has our business leaders of tomorrow in class on older computers and no textbooks because budgets didn't allow for textbooks or updated machines. How is that getting students ready for the workforce where newer machine are used?

3. ErrollLeVant (2452) | 10 months ago | probably not in a society that values athletes and actors more than teachers!

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | You got that right. But the truth is money follows demand. Actors are in demand more than civic leaders and scientists.

4. eeyore39 (3181) | 10 months ago | Unfortunately as a teacher it is a no win situation. This is exactly why you see mre and more teachers retiring or going into some other line of work. They are underpaid in relation to other industries. They have added responsibility. They often work extra hours to complete what is needed. When there is a cut back for a school district they never cut the management, they always cut the teaching or assistant. It truly is a no win job and you have to really love doing it to continue.

Jellen (892) | 10 months ago | That's a fact...or maybe teachers love the three summer months they are supposed to have off. Even that isn't true, if you consider all the courses teachers must take to renew certificates and stay current.

5. ladynetz (543) | 10 months ago | I understand you so well. I am part time teaching at a Sunday school. They do not have many resources, no money, but want us to teach the best way we can. We improvise a lot, but then it's a Sunday school. A regular school should have resources. No doubt about that.Education should be on the first place of every city. council. region-whatever! The education is the only thing that gives children a chance to a better world, to a better understanding, to a better behaviour. If you pay attention, every war is started by uneducated people, who hardly can read or understand a sentence. That's what we want in our future?
