What's Your Top Ten?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 76/100. keymandan (737) 3 years ago

I could start out this discussion with a simple list of my top ten, and then ask you about yours. But that would be kind of boring, would it not? I would like to direct you fellow mylotters to a video of one of my favorite songs, and I hope somebody gets paid for having done it, and that is http://www.youtube.com/wa... It's Keith Whitley's song - "I'm No Stranger to the Rain". Keith died in '89, when I was going through my first divorce. He essentially drank himself to death, and could I ever relate. Look he was married to a beautiful woman in Lori Morgan, and he had a successful music career. Why would this astonishingly handsome talent decide that life wasn't worth living?

I'm no stranger to the rain, either. I like Keith's other songs as well. All we could feel about his life is utter and total sadness. It's necessary and absolutely mandatory that we go through this grieving process of those who needlessly and without any purpose whatsoever end it all before their time. I drink, like lots of men and women drink. I like it, but I don't like it enough to use it for something other than it was meant to be - a way to relax. Not die. Now, that is just one song. I'm busy applying it to my life, but not to the point that I want to end it all.

"Comes a Time" comes to mind... The youtube version I like the best is no longer available. What Neil did for songwriting can never be underestimated because of that song. For you can never understand it, but you love to sing and play along with it. But, did you hear what he said, "This old world keeps spinning 'round, It's a wonder tall trees ain't layin' down - There comes a Time." I literally saw that song on the north shore of the Lake down there near New Orleans. I saw them majestic and tall trees all over those houses up there. Wow! Talk about a big storm that blew up!

I believe that our biggest issue is how to deal with suffering, with "seemingly" one disaster after another. We lose loved ones to disease; we watch as our elders first, and then we ourselves slowly grow old. And our children grow up and grow out. Out of the house, you know. Their lives become separate and apart when it seems that the time we had with them was so very, very short. Once we understand that little fact, and it is so little as to almost be miniscule, but it is so important - that to suffer is to still live.

While we are at it, my other favorite song is "Old Man" by Neil Young, and my favorite rendition is available at http://www.youtube.com/wa... Neil shows in his youth what his future was to be, and somehow gave us a gift that never goes away. "Give me things that won't get lost, like a coin that won't get tossed - rollin' home to you." For with age comes a beauty that does indeed last. We last as we keep working, keep applying ourselves, keep being real, keep staying up with whatever is being discussed, and whatever makes us happy deep, deep down inside.

There is no better song out there, in my opinion than "Shower the People" by Sir James Taylor. I don't know if he's been knighted, but I'm sure because of that song he should be. It never fails to bring the tears to my eyes, the power to my pen, the voice when I need to speak. For I am ever so passionate, so emotional, and so determined to bring that reality of universal love to all who meet with me or come in contact with me. Please tell me that "things are going to get much better, if we only will.", Sir James. I don't mean to say that it is my favorite song, it's just a much better song than what is generally written.

The Carpenters had several songs that would be on my top ten: Again, here is a star that was cut short in life in that most blessed of voices - Karen Carpenter. I'll leave it to those who really understand vocals to enumerate her technical inflections of tone, but what amazes me about her was that she did it while playing drums. If I had to say what my favorite was, "Yesterday Once More", would come very, very close. But, then sometimes I wake up to another week of problems - er, challenges - and love "Rainy Day's and Mondays".

It seems I'm running out of placements for my top ten. One by Keith Whitley, 2 by ol' Neil, 1 by Sir Taylor, and 2 by the Carpenters, which brings us to an exact value of 6. Get ready for a shocker: My final 4 will be straight out of the 70s rock era: Rush - "The Trees", Allman Bros. Band - "Southland", Boston - "Peace of Mind", and Journey's "Girl Can't Help It". Oops, guess that last one was out of the 80s. Now, I've used up all ten, and I hope they are some of the ones you enjoy as well. But seriously, or rather not so seriously, what is your top ten?

Ya got it all Dan, well, what can i say, this is a great song ever and I enjoy it. You have your slogan that makes sense, do you drink often? You have nice songs in your top ten lists and very meaningful song. To me, I don't think I can list them all in a top ten because I have many of them. I'm listening to many great album from pop to rock and rock to r&b and to instruments. There are Wubai & China Blue, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Beyond, The Shadows, Kitaro, Black Eye Peas, Seal, Michael Learn to Rock and Richard Clayderman. Just to name a few, because these are all my all time favorite. You are real good for any discussion, you can write more than I expected. Happy Mylotting.

Often enough - but I try to keep it under control. I'm not as young as you, so I don't handle anything as well as I used to. Shoot, when I was in my teens, and it was still more or less legal for teens to drink, I could put away lots of beer in no time. Not anymore. Sigh.

Of all the ones you mentioned, my favorite is undoubtedly Kitaro. I used to listen to him everyday. Lost that CD somewhere along the way, but I bet I could find him on youtube. In that genre, I also like Acoustic Alchemy, Enya, Pat Metheny, "Collaboration" by George Benson and Earl Klugh.

Thanks for responding.

Im guessing by what you have written, your asking top 10 songs.... I dont really have reasons why I like these songs, bt I can try and write something...

1. Still of the Night - Whitesnake (( I am a huge fan of Whitesnake, and I persoanlly think David Coverdale is probably the best vocalist ever. I like this song as, it was part of their most successful alubm (known simply as 1987 ('87) in Europe, and Whitesnake across the world) na dalthough Here I go Again '87 is probably their most famous, I just love this song))

2. Alice Cooper - Poison.... This song, I think itsn't my favourite from Alice Cooper but, it is actually what got me listening to Rock/Metal and Music in general, and partly why it is at Number 2.

3. Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child...This song I know partly from WCW with teh NWO, but this song in full has some of the greatest riffs ever, with some great solos and guitar in General. Hendrix was a genuis when it came to music and especially with Guitar.

4. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb..Now Im not the bigggest Pink Floyd fan, but all respect to them I really love this song. It has probably the greatest guitar solo ever, with it being around 2 minutes long...what more can you say...

5. AC/DC - Highway to Hell/Back in Black...Now I must also say these songs are not my favourite AC.DC songs/albums but, they are probably the most recognisable of most AC/DC stuff, especially Back in black being the second biggest selling album.

6. Motorhead - Ace of Spades/Born to Raise Hell...Ace of Spades definately being Motorheads most recognisable song/album, and really could be a catalyst into getting pople into motorhead. But for me I really do like Born to Raise Hell, although Overkill is my favourite song, but all in all, good stuff.

7. Quiet Riot - Metal Health...The Metal Health Album, was/can be considered a 1 Hit Wonder for Quiet Riot, being the first metal album to go Number 1 on the Pop chart/Billboard 100 and is a real good album/track, and anyone who is a rock.metal fan and hasnt heared the song, Should!!

8. Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon...I know that Randy Rhoads is probably Ozzy's most famous Guitarist, but after his Death in late '82 I think Jake E. Lee did a great job with Ozzzy on Bark at the Moon on Ozzy's thrid solo album and has some really awesome guiyar as well.....

9. Scorpions - Rock you like a Hurricane..One of Scorpions best song, and although they have other reat tracks this is definately their most famous, and a great trak at that. With some great Vocals/lyrics, and real good guitar and drums, Rock on!!

10. Deep Purple - Burn/The Battle Rages On...Firstly the Battle Rages on is prety much a reunion of the Deep Purple MKII line up, and Burn the MKIII line up, (MKII with Ian Gillan on Vocals, MKIII with David Coverdale on Vocals), and yes there are more famous songs than The Battle Rages on, but I really like it until, I discover more Purple songs, and Burn I just really love, what a song.

Anyway this is some of my top 10, my not be totally 100% accurate but its what I can think of and so on....

While some of my closest of friends are metal heads, I've never gotten into it myself. I do like White Snake, and some of Ozzy's stuff, and certainly Coverdale's older stuff with Deep Purple, I'm a keyboardist and an acoustic guitarist, so those songs that are written with those instruments being featured, I tend to like.

I'm showing my age, but I did listen to Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" and "The Wind Cries, Mary, Sweet Mary" when it came out. What was considered "metal" back in those days was Led Zep and The Allman Bros Band. Not because it actually was this head-banging scream at the top of your voice (like Kiss introduced), but because you needed to be really high on something to really enjoy it. And our parents absolutely forbid you listening to them. Back in the day, as we say, you'd get not just a tongue-lashing, but whipped with a belt. That was before child protection services.

Kids these days have no idea how good they've got it. They can listen to what they want, text message all they want, and be as high as they want for as long as they want. We, in my generation, had to work our butts off. We had to get up on time, and go to bed on time. We had to do everything on the QT, of else we would have not only been grounded, we would had bruises and red marks on our back sides. And, the songs they listen to rebel against authority? If only our authority had been so easy-going.

Thanks for responding, and have a blessed day,

Dan

Wel personally Im 18 so I can be considered young, and a bit more old fashoined when it comes to the music I listen to. As you say about metal, I would say the majority of them are metal, but yes Led Zeplin were to an extent, but conisering they mostly used acoustic guitars in their work, and basically inspired/influenced Heavy Metal along with othters. I must point out, when it comes to music we do kind of have it easy, as our parents dont reall care, but should kinda when it comes to that screaming crap, which the freedom is good. But I dont agree with the bit where, we have it wasy, the fact is there are a lot more pressurer on us to do better, and to pass all our exmas an so on, basically to be successful which, doesnt help, but in the flexibility to what music we listen to...I dont think many parents will stop us from listening to Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath or Whatever.

I like your moniker, there. "First Contact" was a Star Trek Next Generation movie wasn't it? Where they went back in time an met the inventor of the warp engine? Cool.

Certainly, young people (and I shouldn't call them kids, even though it seems that way by now) have their share of problems like we all did. Wild horses couldn't take me back in time when I actually had hair, and I'd go to what we called, "meat markets" and pick up women. To the days of Micheal Jackson and Queen. If I looked back, which I try not to do, I was tormented in ways that I am not now. For one thing, I was convinced I knew everything, because I was a straight A student. Truth was, that I was only beginning to learn. And my girlfriends and eventually my wife loved me not because they knew me, but because I was young and handsome and made good money.

What was bugging me was that one day I was going to lose all that - the looks, the money, and the women. Something inside of me knew that was going to happen. As to social standards, or educational standards, I met those easy enough. What I was failing to meet were my own standards, which I only now have begun to define. I'm actually doing that with the help of the very young people who know Nirvana, and Soundgarden, and Metallica. To be able to play along with them says that I'm not as old as what I think, for you are as old or young as you think - and being young isn't everything.

Hey I appreciate your responses, and wish you well. Go in peace.

Dan

I like punk, metal, grunge, rock band. Heres my list:
1. Rage Against The Machine, I like almost all of their song. Morello is genius with his guitar and guitar effect.
2. Nirvana, also I like almost all of their songs. One of the greatest grunge band.
3. Sonic Youth, they really2 creative with using the guitar.
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Voodoo Chile, Aint no Telling, You Got me Floating. He is an ultimate genius.
5. Audioslave: Man or Animal, Your Time Has Come.
6. System of a Down: Chop Suey!, BYOB, Toxicity.
7. Metallica: Hit The Light, Master of Puppet, One, Enter Sandman.
8. ACDC: Back in Black
9. Guns n Roses: Sweet Child o Mine, Welcome to the Jungle.
10. Green Day: American Idiot, Warning.
Well I dont think this really accurate. I dont really like band nowadays, they dont really have their own unique music like the 90's band and older.

myLot reputation of 76/100. keymandan (737)  3 years ago

As I said earlier, I am not a metal head, but I really do like Metallica's "Enter the Sandman", as well as another they did, "King of Nothing". I agree with you that much of the metal bands these days have a hard time defining their unique sound. I am totally into acoustic 12-string guitar, which you can hear at www.soundclick.com/danmatheny if you care to listen. It's not for everybody, and the youth of today are no different than the youth of my day - they still want to have their butts rocked off. As long as you realize there will come a time when you get burnt out on having your ears ringing after a concert, for you will lose your hearing as a result. Bill Clinton lost part of his hearing as a result of playing sax in front of those screaming, loud bands, and though I did not, I cannot to this day play keyboards in front of drums and bass without using earplugs. When it is too loud, and I'm listening - I just walk outside. I need my hearing, I don't need the music if it is going to destroy it.

Metal, grunge - all that was such an exciting and new development in music. But, we have come to a time when most people are no longer young. The population has aged, and with age comes considerations of really boring subjects like your health, your financial security, and not making the same mistakes you did as a young person. For me, it is also using proper English and not making too many typos. And a very good knowledge of history. What actually happened, as opposed to what we are led to believe happened. Well, I'm rambling now...

Thanks for your response - be cool, and be blessed,

Dan
