You have to have rules. I'm pretty laid back. As long as my daughter is doing well and keeping her grades up then she can use the computer etc. We share in the household chores and without being told she goes to bed at a decent hour. She is 15 and really a pretty easy kid to deal with for the most part. The rules were stricter when she was younger and changed based on her ability to handle responsebility.

I have always instil the importance of house rules to my kids. As young minds need to be trained to accept and follow some kind of rules and to understand the importance of them and that as parents we should inculcate in them rules are meant to be obeyed so that they will trained their minds to obey rules when they grow up as they will meet more bigger rules in their lives. My house rule is they should make up their beds on rising up and they should return the things they took back to its original place after usage.

i came from a house of with pretty strict parents. I'm 21, and i still live with my parents, so i still have to follow some of the rules
I was allowed 2 hours of tv or computer a day on school days, and 4 hours on non school days. And on school days, my homework had to be done before this time.
When I was being lectured or punished, mom and dad were "Ma'am" and "Sir". I always had to say "please" "thank you" and "your welcome" or I'd get yelled at. I was spanked alot as a kid.
When i was a teenager, up until i was done in high school, my curfew was 10, and that was very strict, i've been punished many times for coming in at 10:05 or so. After high school though, i don't have a curfew
I set my seat at the table every night, when i was being punished, i set the whole table. I also have to wash dishes twice a week, and that doesn't mean using the dish washer. I have to make my bed every morning, and make sure my room is clean. Pajamas placed on my pillow, bathrobe on my bed, and the only thing that can go on the floor are my night time slippers. I also had to do my laundry as soon as I was old enough to learn how to
No shoes in the house, and this eventually became a "Shoes off Slippers on" rule (Flip flops would do for the summer). If i was ever caught with shoes on, or no slippers on, past my front door, i'd get yelled at.
When i was really young, probably up until i was 12 or 13, i had to be in my pjs and ready for bed 2 hours before my bed time. If my bed time was 9, by 7 I had to be done with my bath/shower, in my pajamas, and teeth brushed. I also had to be in my bathrobe and slippers too (a different pair than what i'd wear during the day too). If any of this was missing, i'd be punished
When I did get punished, it'd last a week at a time. During this week, no TV or computer at all, i had to set the table for everyone every day, wash the dishes everyday. I also had to get ready for bed as soon as i got home from school, same procedure as before, but happened as soon as I was home. Then i had to do my homework right away. Once i was done with all those chores, i was sent to my room to sit and read. My parents would check up on me alot in there, and theyd even get mad at me for taking off my robe or slippers, so those had to stay on until it was bed time, which also came an hour earlier.
Those are the main ones. Like I said, i still have to follow some of those rules, like washing dishes, setting my spot at the table, slippers in the house, bathrobe with pjs... Pretty strict, but i live with it

whew! i like your parents way of disciplining you. because iam a bit like them. and sometimes my son cant understand it. thats why he can really hear me nagging and scolding him everytime he dont follow my rules and not doing my instructions i gave to him.

What do you be by how do i assist it?
I definitely think growing up under all those rules made me a much more respectful person and alot of these rules are just automatic to me now. Like, I lived in a dorm for 2 years in college and every night, usually no later than 9, pjs, bathrobe and slippers go on, until the time i go to bed. I must've been the only guy who walked around the dorms in my robe and slippers, but i was so used to it. Also, I made my bed every day, and my room was always clean. So, living like thiat gave me a sense of respect and organization.
I wouldn't say i hated my parents, I can understand the rules. They're both older than most peoples parents, so they grew up in the 50s, so alot of those rules were more popular then, At the same time, i think they really sheltered me alot. None of my other friends had anything like my house rules. My curfew being at 10 for the longest time was terrible for my social life. punishments were kinda harsh too. It doesn't seem like much, but sometimes i'd be punished for 2 weeks at a time. And not having any real entertainment in that time was terrible. They also never let me forget that I was being punished. Being in my pjs so early in the afternoon was very embarrassing. If my brother or sister had friends over, they'd look at me, and someone would have to tell them "He's being punished". As soon as I got home, my mom would be like "get ready for bed, pajamas on, slippers on, robe tied tight". today, i love wearing all that, but when i was younger, in the afternoon, that all mean that I was being punished, and I was embarrassed.
Don't get my wrong, i love my parents, and there's alot more to my growing up than just the rules, and they're absolutely loving parents, they're just strict and believe in respect and discipline

I wouldn't know about sons at all. I have 4 daughters. 3 of them are all grown up now but trust me....there were some moments especially during the teens.
