PLASTIC, PLASTIC EVERYWHERE...but I'm not so flexible | | | | You call it: bottles, wrappers, boxes, shoes, balls, cars, tires, planes and boats; PC's, laptops, tools, kitchen appliances and every other kind... and how many others could you include!? and they're all made out of plastic, which supposedly take some TEN THOUSAND YEARS to decompose in the earth!!! Do you ever stop to think about what we are doing to ourselves this way? How do you chip in to the recycling issue? | | i try and recycle everything that i can. i re use milk gallon containers and everything else that i can. i was very upset to find that the bottom of a coffee cup said it could be recycled but the number in the recycle symbol did not match those that our trash collector took. we only take 1-5 and the cup was a 6. i'm still not sure what these numbers mean. | | | | | | | dismalgrin (1330)

| | Hello, tracie1758, it is my understanding that the numbers on the bottom of recyclable items stand for how many times you can safely recycle it without the bad chemicals leaking out of it for food type items. For example. It has been said that when you get bottled water, you should not refill and reuse more times that it says on the bottom of the bottle. I really do not know how true all this is, but that is just how it was explained to me. Some of it sounds a little like 'how do they keep track then?' type of stuff. But, whatever. Haha. There could be a total different reason too. I had always that the numbers stood for the type of plastic the item contained. So, that when the recycle people sort it they could put all items of the same type together. But, I got laughed at when I verbalized that one last. So, I guess that is not the true reason. Hehe. Hope that helps some. | | | | | | | | | Green Computer Recycling Free Pickup or Drop-off: Laptops- Monitors-TVs-Servers-All Ewaste www.allgreenrecycling.com | add comment | | | |

| | Well I responded to this once and it disappeared because I wasn't signed in. Consider yourself special that I took the time to do it again! LOL ... It's hard to get away from using plastics altogether, but I do what I can. I do re-use everything that can be re-used, I don't buy baggies, I used a very small amount of plastic wrap (maybe one roll a year, if that). I do use plastic containers for leftovers and such, but since they are re-used innumerable times, it's not nearly as bad as tossing after one use. I don't buy bottled water (I'm already paying for what comes out of the faucet, so I refuse to pay for it again!), and I don't drink soda and such. Milk comes in plastic, but I don't go through a lot and I do re-use those jugs too, for water in the garden and some to keep on hand for emergencies. I splurged on a pack of cinnamon rolls the other day and saved the clear hinged container to start seeds in, like a mini greenhouse - hopefully that will be soon. I do what I can, and yes, I do care! | | | | | | | mechanicNOT62 (1590)

| | I AM special just knowing you!!! (little as that might be) I was fishing for you, just to see that picture! I know you well enough to bait you right. I asked a thousand times and never got an answer to this, when I lived in El Paso, I noticed that some people placed the gallon jugs (apparently filled with water) all around their lots. I don't recall noticing whether they had their caps on or not, but I though that was most unusual. I cut my plastic bottles to use them as funnels, but I only need so many of them; and I use the bottoms for nails, screws and whatever other small parts I might have. The other jugs, no matter what of, I send to recycling plants. You're awesome, you know! Thanks. | | | | | | | Electronics Recycling Laptops / Desktops / All Electronics 7523 Aurora Ave N. 206-257-2323 SeattleRecycling.info | add comment | | | |

| | I feel sad when I find forests littered with plastics. BTW how can one say how long is it going to take for plastics to decompose. We need plastic eating bacteria juts like we have oil eating bacteria. I do care about the recycling issue. | | | | | | | | | mechanicNOT62 (1590)

| | Certain beaches around the world are now composed of a high percentage of ground up plastic along with regular sand. Fish are now eating plastic. Scientists are really starting to wonder what their consumption of plastic means on the cellular level. Are we in turn consuming this plastic in some way and what will this do to us on a this same level? My state has a bottle return policy for soda bottles and cans. My city has curbside recycling at no added cost along with our garbage disposal. I try to recycle everything that is possible! | | | | | | | mechanicNOT62 (1590)

| | Surely recycling has to have its rewards! I would think cities could derive some profit from recycling, besides more clean environments, if they educated the people also. I have heard that Teflon (which I think is another palstic derivative) can cause cancer, so that should answer part of your question. But I hadn't even though about the "evolutionary" effects on fishes. What about melamine? Isn't that another sort of plastic? That's what the Chinese were adding to something or other (I think milk or rice) so that kids were being poisoned! Aren't we and our technological advances great? | | | | rocketj1 (2435)

| | When we were first married (19 years ago almost!) we had a parakeet in a tiny apartment with us. I was told not to cook with the teflon coated pan because the fumes could kill my bird. Hmmmm........ what about me? And didn't they use canaries to warn the miners of dangerous fumes in underground mines? Hmmmmm..... Now, of course, they are worried about us ingesting it. Makes me wonder about "microwavable" plastics. I think I will get rid of my microwave and any teflon I have left. They say stainless steel and cast iron pans are best. | | Recycling plastic is not recyled around here! I don't know of any places that recycles it! I try to stay away from plastic bottles that have soda, water and Gatotade! I buy milk in bags.I do this becouse it is cheaper then the jugs. Like I said,I don't think plastic is recycled around here so that is another reason I don't buy jugs! I recycle aluminum cans, other aluminum like aluminum wrap and pie pans. I also recycle metal like steel. I even recycle tin cans. I get all the tin cans from work,I work in a kitchen, and recycle them! There is no recycling bin by are trash dumpsters so a few years ago, I decided to take on the task of recycling all the cans! It is alot but I know I'm doing a good thing! | | | | | | | mechanicNOT62 (1590)

| | YOU ARE doing a good thing! I try to find people that sell aluminum cans so I can give ours to those people and I help twice as much! It's too bad that recycling plastics is not a thing where you live. Plastics are in just about everything we can think of. In El Paso we were able to recycle everything I can remember, including tin cans and glass, and I miss that. | | | | | | | Demolition Specialist Heavy industrial, commercial, and environmental remediation experts. www.nadc1.com | add comment | | | |

| | I don't suppose you really need to hear my views on this, knowing how well you know me by now. I'm just an old hippie, ya know. I've been recycling for years. I can't look at something without thinking about what else can I do with it. Man, I've been a recycler before it became popular! I drove my poor mom crazy by holding on to so much stuff, because I WILL use it one day... promise! Anyway, of course I care about this. I care a lot! I get irritated when I see someone throwing something away what could be going to recycling centers. I'm always looking for those little triangle things on plastic containers to see if the recycling center takes them. And, yes, I DO take them to the recycling center. I eat a lot of yogurt and those little fruit cups that come in plastic cups. I save them for various things. Some I use to start veggie seeds, some I use for beads when I'm making jewelry, I always keep one at the kitchen sink for those pesky little pieces of food that should not go down our drain because we have a septic system, etc. I've saved chopsticks from eating at Chinese buffets and they are either supports for my young plants or they're part of a newly built board that holds all my spools of thread for sewing. (The board itself is recycled from an old cork bulletin board.) I have quite an imagination for recycling things and I put it to good use! There is very little actual "trash" coming from my house. If I can't use it, and it's on the recycling list of acceptable things, it goes to the recycling dump. Plastic grocery bags? Well, I use less of them now and will someday, hopefully, never have to use them at all, because I've made a few grocery bags out of leftover fabric from other projects and plan to make more. What plastic bags I do have and continue to get, I've learned how to crochet with them. Cool, huh? I know it sounds weird, but I'm working on a cover for my SUV for times when hail is expected. I've seen what hail can do to vehicles if it's big enough! I'll have a thick, plastic cover for mine once it's finished... it will absorb most of the impact of those golfball-sized hailstones. (I've actually thought of patenting the idea.) Plastic grocery bags can also be used to crochet outdoor rugs for patios 'n' such. Yep, I'm just an aging hippie looking for my place in this world. Until I find it, I do what I can. | | | | | | | | | mechanicNOT62 (1590)

| | OVERWHELMING, darling! I'll have to keep this discussion in my files so I can rememebr all that...NOT!!! (just kidding, of course) Yes, I know you're a recycling nut...wel, no, just nuts regardless. BUT we love you for it and you know it. I think that's etrrific that you think that way and maybe A LOT OF PEOPLE better start thinking that way, considering the way things are going (hint, hint). I think that bubble wrap stuff is a great idea and I'm so very glad it's being used more than those styrofoam penuts that last forever! But I am most impressed by people who weave those rugs from plastic bags. I really like that. And your idea about the car cover is awesome! So HUGE CONGRATICISMS TO YA, BABE! | | | | | | | | | | | HDX Cattle Ear Tags HD.tag from Destron. Reusable or Tamperproof. Dairy Cattle Tags. http://www.sagebrushtags.com | add comment | | | |

| | i try to do my best but i am not rich so sadly apart from recycling my rubbish i have to make do with what i can afford. I think our respective governments need to get tougher as all products are wrapped in far to much plastic, thats before we look at the product being plastic. i have to purchase what i can budget for. Mr Gordon Brown has the power to tell UK manufacturers to be more 'green'. Or i could do a raid on all plastic manufacturing factory's.......on my paper aeroplane of course! | | | | | | | | | | | | Recycling Search Our Business Directory For Recycling Services and Info www.business.com | add comment | | | |

| | What about plastic body parts? HAHAHHAAA joke only! Yes, recycling is part of our household things to do. We gather up the plastic containers and bottles that we get exchanged for a bit of cash. We get to do some savings with that and at the same time, help the environment in our own little ways as well. Along with newspapers, we also recycle that. Last year, in our community there was a group that did a recycling program. All the old electronics stuff like television, computers, electric fans, etc were being collected in exchange for an extra cash. Our old, conked out t.v. sets, busted computers, VCR, and other old stuff that had gathered dust in our house's little corners we got rid off in a good way. Yes, we do care. I care. Our planet Mother Earth is all we've got and who better else to take care of it than us, right :-) | | | | | | | | | | | | New: Reuse up to 57% less Quality Reuse at bargain prices: Compare Reuse and save up to 57%! www.Reuse.news72.com | add comment | | | |

| | I try to recycle, when I can. But, sometimes I don't think of it till it's too late. I don't really send off my plastics anywhere, but I reuse it all at home. Like you can use milk cartons as plant starter containers and I do things like that mostly. I also reuse my grocery bags. I don't really use cloth bags because that is way too much hauling for me. Oh, and me and my kids have been known to spend many a happy hour sitting around with those popping mail packager things. Popping away. I don't know why I love doing that still. It's rather fun, I think. Haha. That can be considered recycling to an exstent because you are extending the life of the item. LoL. Okay, that one is stretching it a bit... sorry. | | | | | | | | | dismalgrin (1330)

On a more serious note have you heard that 'the earth is not a gift from our parents, it's a loan from our children.'?
