For many of us we knew this poems off by heart, But that was yesterday.

Now if one looks at them and never has heard it or know it as a Childs Rhyme.
What would you think it would mean to you.

Lets look at it.

To start with it's a WARNING.
And WHAT do they mean by "YOUR SURE FOR A BIG SURPRICE".

And WHY is it so important to go in 'DISGUISE'.

Then it goes to tell us about "TEDDY BEARS" having a picnic.
Does this mean TODAY the BEARS were having an OUTING....
I know BEARS who ride BIKES.(today)and when they have an outing (picnic),
Well thats another life some would not understand or may not be within their Beliefs.

I read many old Children's Stories and have to laugh, with "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS", I wonder if our Children still get the same fun from those Rhymes as we did.

What do think?

This is the TRUE Teddybears picnic as printed.

If you go out in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go out in the woods today
You'd better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

I will have to go look at that.
If kids today hear the same kind of rhymes as we did I think they would like them.
I read my daughter all the old nursery rhymes. That one is new to me though.
My daughter always loves me to do "this little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy had roast beef and this little piggy had none. And this little piggy went wee wee wee all the way home."
I used to grab her toes as I did it.
Last summer I was at a friend's house and she has a little boy and I did it to him and he liked it. The mom said she had never done that before.

Sometimes I think some people have gone overboard with political correctness. I used to think that there were words which were meant for both genders like 'mankind'. But no, in many parts of the world there are real attempts to push away these words and replace them with 'politically correct' words or terms. Even my country does not escape this wave. I am beginning to hear words like chairperson and humankind.

If we really want to be politically correct why not be fair? Therefore we should use words like Person Earth, Person Ship, and Person Land.

In my opinion we are wasting our time nit picking, time which could better be used like how to overcome the current economic crisis and crop failures.

all the best,
ninja rosdimy

Hi, friend.
Foremost, I have to say that I personally don't know about this poem. In fact, this is the very first time I ever heard and read of this poem. I guess this is one of the poems which is quite native to your place, or its author is from your area; 'homegrown' as they say.
But I'm an individual who is fond of prose and poetry. If I can and if my time or schedule permits me, I read of poems & other compositions of various authors. My schoolfriends used to tell me that I'm a voracious reader. With my fondness on these creations, this also encouraged me to try my hand with poems first; and eventually, I also wrote some short novels which are still unpublished locally up to present.
Frankly, the poem you mentioned here doesn't give a striking effect to me. What was it supposed to mean, other than the ordinary? No offense meant to you and to anyone who loved this poem; but this is my personal opinion. I guess it's because of timing effect and other factors which may have been significant to you in previous times rather than now.
Anyway, I tried to visualize the poem and a simple yet harmonious occasion is what I see being portrayed in there, while I was reading the poem. Thanks for sharing the poem to me and to others who will be reading it after me. Regards, friend.

Hoping the surprise isn't a "Deliverance" style surprise of the "squeal like a stuck pig" variety. Perhaps the bears had to go in disguise because it was bear-hunting season. I must be missing something because I can't find the political correctness in the teddy bear rhyme. Can't wait to post my response so I can see what others came up with in the rhyme.

I never thought of it that way!

Did you hear the Grimm's Fairy Tales as a child? I loved them but reading them as an adult I'm surprised I wasn't scared to death! I still love them but look at them a lot differently now that I'm grown up. Same way with the Teddy Bear song, I never heard that till my boys were little and never thought anything of it till now!

I always liked THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFFS, and how they talked about the (were they TROLLS)with eyes as big as dinner plates, with EYES as big a GABBAGE BIN LIDS.
Now that puts the wind up you, Thats what nightmares are made of, hahaha.

Moving over to something else, did you ever hear, The story, The Swallow and the Statue.
The end will make you cry but happy the end was like that.

The 3 billy goats were in a story book I had and the pictures were quite frightening! The troll was very ugly and scary but he could be killed--there was an awful lot of blood in the old tales!! We didn't suffer for it though, did we?

I just looked up the Swallow and the Statue and that is a sad but inspiring story. It's good for children to hear such things.

We at a village here have a TEDDY BEARS PICNIC, each year.

All the children bring their Teddy Bears and the Fairies come and have magic mushroom rings to sit in. (not hippy magic mushrooms just normal mushrooms (button) from the supermarket.
We have a TEA Party for the TEDDY BEARS.

Lots of Fun, good to have one in your Area if you dont have one,
Can charge a small coin to be there and the profit can go to the Children of the Area for play ground equipment or books, or toys for use by all on loan from the Library (make a TOY LIBRARY.)

Hi hiccup,

I have always wanted to know those lyrics, thank you so much, I think it is just a warning in the old days that not to for in the woods and play because there are many dangers there like snakes and all sorts of dangers there, but today its the two legged animals that you have to watch out for, so that is the warning for children.

Very smart how it was put together, and yes I think it was a warning to take care when going to the Woods.

To keep ones eyes open and that danger may be there.

Hello my friend hiccup Ji,
I suppose and accept as change of place (era), time. Now-a-days. Lie would look as
truth and vice versa. What we had experiences during our child-hood, will be totally
different these days. This is, what is generation gap. We havew to accept it. For us,
Holi river Ganges has changed the root. Seasons are changing, Nature is changing. But,
real poetyic ideas would remain same. May god bless you and have a great time. thumbup

We found a fabulous book of children's fairy stories, all reworked to make them politically correct. It was hysterical, but I guess the kids wouldn't have found them half as exciting. I wish I could remember where I found it.
