Here is the newest law for debate in Missouri |
|
They are now wanting to start to fine people $1000 for throwing a cigarette butt on the ground. I am not a smoker but I think this should not be for the first offense. For the first offense they should do community service by wearin a pair of rubber gloves and picking up cigarette butts or other trash for a total of 15 hours. The paper on the cigarette and tobacco are degradable but they say the filter itself has a life expatancy of over one year. Most places with outside smoking areas USUALLY have someplace to put the butt. They interviewed some smokers, one was angry, one said it was a good idea, another said if they could not find trash can they put it out on the bottom of their shoe and place it in their pocket.

1. benny128 (1850) | 11 months ago | I think the fine will be good, only way to dis-courage it, is to hit them in their pockets
Tho I would do both a fine and they have to spend 30 mins picking cig butts up.
Not a fan of people who throw their cigs away as you can tell, I dont litter and think its just mad that some people find it ok to throw litter or cig butts away.
just my opinion.

muscles4me (9342) | 11 months ago | I could go for both a fine and picking up butts but it should be more than 30 minutes and they should have to wear a jacket or shirt that says I littered and go caught.

muscles4me (9342) | 11 months ago | Thats what I was thinking. Who would give them the ticket?? The police LOL. So if you saw a cop you would not throw the butt down. Have a good day.

4. sudalunts (4247) | 10 months ago | I think people should not drop their cigarettes butts on the ground, but dispose of them properly. A thousand dollar fine sounds quite high. I am not condoning throwing cigarette butts on the ground, but I would want to fine the people who spit rather than the butts. Butts are more visible than spit, and people sometimes step in other people's spit and track it into their homes. Spitting to me is much worse than cigarette butts.

5. catdla1 (2790) | 10 months ago | I'm a smoker myself, and I would no more drop a cigarette butt in public than I would at home. It's ugly, poses a risk for birds fish and animals who might ingest them, and if it's dry and windy poses a significant fire risk. It's not feasible for communities to post fire danger signs for people dropping lit butts, so I tend to agree with the fine, although I would think a judge would have the authority to change it for first offense. Equally irritating are people who spit chewing gum all over the place...but I'll save that for another gripe session...lol.
