Led Zeppelin album cover  email this discussion to a friend?

Does anyone else hate the cover of Led Zeppelins first album? Just in case anyone doesn't know what it is, it's a picture of the Hindenberg airship in flames. Thirty six people died in the disaster. Here's a Wikipedia article about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindenburg_disaster
Does anyone else think it was wrong to use this as an album cover? I love Led Zeppelins music but I think this was incredibly disrespectful. Just imagine if a band used a photo of the plane flying into the twin towers as an album cover.

I have never seen the album cover but I do think that it is in very poor taste and a insult to the descendants of that terrile disaster. I'm just worried now that you may have given some other thoughtless group an idea for their next album cover.

I hope I don't give anyone ideas.

As with many things Zeppelin did it was very well calculated to make a big impact. You have to remember that this was late sixties and people's sensibilities were a little different.

But here is no doubt that the cover was designed to get a reaction. It doesn't offend me, but much of the album does, not because I dislike the music, but because Page and Plant claimed songwriting credits for some songs that were written by bluesmen. This trend continued with Zeppelin 2 with the shameful stealing of Whole Lotta Love from Willie Dixon and continued right through to the Presence album with Nobodys Fault but Mine. The album cover is just an album cover. Plagiarism is theft and that offends me. Always has and one of the reasons why I'm not a great fan of the alleged greatest band ever

Blues musicians have always used music and lyrics that were written by other artists. For instance Led Zeppelin got the line "squeeze my lemon" from a Robert Johnson song called Traveling Riverside Blues, but Robert Johnson had already 'stolen' a lot of lyrics in that song from a blues musician called Art McKay.

While Led Zeppelin did use a lot of music and lyrics that other people had written without giving credit, so did a lot of the original bluesmen. It's just that Led Zeppelin got rich doing so.

I agree that musicians always take lyrics and riffs - witness Blackmore's cheerful admission that the riff for Black Night is the base line of some obscure song, but to take the whole song from go to whoa and say that you wrote it is like me copying a Stephen King short story and putting my name on it. This wasn't a rewiring it was theft. The good thing of course was it made me check out guys like Willie Dixon and appreciate how good those early blues artists really were.

Don't get me wrong Zeppelin brought a lot of joy to a lot of people and were incredibly well managed to present themselves as the ultimate band, but there were many bands of that era who were more cutting edge and just as big then (Deep Purple certainly outsold them for several years) Where Zeppelin have lasted in the public mind is down to the expert management of John (?) Grant who stage managed (and still does) there every move - even down to the production of that album cover which the band would have had very little say in producing
