10 ways of cutting back on spending |
| |
| I just received this. Might be useful to many of us in these tough economic times. ________________________ Simplify your life by cutting out those needless extra expenses. Here are 10 ways to cut back on the money you don't need to spend. Number Ten: Pay in cash -- this means you will always know exactly how much money you have. With credit cards, debt can add up quickly and you may not pay them off as fast as you would like to. When you pay in cash, it's also a great feeling because you know it's done and paid for and you won't have any bills piling up. Number Nine: Don't get someone else to do it for you -- stop paying extra to get things done for you when you can do them yourself. Instead of automatically taking your shirts to the dry cleaners, wash them by hand and hang them to dry. Number Eight: Eat out less -- Visit your local supermarket and pick up fresh ingredients to make homemade meals. You can also take your leftovers to work or have them the next day for dinner. Number Seven: Shop with a purpose -- Whether you're grocery shopping or attending to other errands, it's best to shop with a list. A list reminds you of your reason for shopping and to resist impulse items. It is also a good idea to plan your meals in advance, so that when you get to the store you know exactly what you need to make meals throughout the week. Try to avoid shopping when you're hungry. Number Six: Get some fresh air -- Walking is good for you, and it's cheaper than driving. If it's possible for you to hike or bike to your destination, do it. Number Five: Keep your car longer -- do you really need that brand new car? Maybe your old one will operate just fine for a few more years. If you maintain the car you have now, you may be able to put off buying a new one for quite awhile. Number Four: Give up your car altogether -- if you live in a city with well-equipped public transportation, chances are you might not even need a car. When you add up the expenses of car ownership including insurance, maintenance and parking, the costs may outweigh the benefits. Make a detailed list of what you actually need your car for. Try renting a car if you need it for a weekend away, or for the monthly trip to Costco you could take advantage of a car-sharing service such asAutoShare orZipcar . Number Three: Find cheaper ways to entertain yourself -- instead of going to the movie theatre, rent a movie, relax and make some popcorn. Movies in the comfort of your own home can be a great way to spend an evening. You can go even further and rent movies from your local library. All you need is a library card and you will have plenty of movies, books and CD's at your disposal. Number Two: Limit the luxuries -- do you really need over 500 channels? Most of the time when you order satellite or digital cable, you are paying for a lot of channels that you don't actually watch. You also pay more depending on the speed of internet you have. If you only use the computer to send emails and read online, you probably don't need the fastest service available. Number One: Skip the little things -- make your own coffee in the morning. Instead of spending $5 a day on gourmet coffee, take it with you from home. Make it a special treat to buy a coffee once a week from your favourite coffee shop. | | | | | |

| | Great ideas to help save some money. I was already doing most of these things, even before these tough economic times. I do use a credit card because I don't want to carry alot of cash around. But I still think about what I am spending and I always, always pay the entire balance each month. | | | | | | |

| | I do the same with my credit card (it is convenient), pay off the balance, and avoid interest charges. Also, now before I buy something, I check to make sure I don't already have it or have something else that might serve the same purpose. | | | |

| | I must say that I live in a college town where everything is pretty much within walking distance of where I live. I walk to most of my classes, or at least walk part of the way and then I take the schools rail transport and since I'm a student I do not have to pay. I know that just by walking all the time and using their transport system, I'm saving a lot of money on gas. The only time I use my car is when I go babysit or when we make a trip that is a lot farther than their transport will take me. We can ride the buses for free too because we're students so that also helps. Walking does make a difference. | | | | | | |

| | These are all great tips. Unfortunately, I've already cut back everywhere possible, even to the point of not using our clothes dryer to dry our clothes after washing them and hanging them outside to dry instead. Clothes dryers, or anything that heats up, gobble up energy so fast it'll make your head spin, especially if you watch your electric meter start zipping along just as you turn on any appliance that heats up. Unfortunately, you have to be careful when hanging up laundry outside to dry if you live in a big city or a high-crime area. I did this once and was shocked to find that most of my laundry had been stolen... right off the clotheline! But, there are many other ways to cut back. All it takes is some common sense. | | | | | | |

| | Hi 1hopefulman, Well I must say that is a good advice as I agree with you, I do my shopping list and get my husband to do the shopping and he is very sensible, he won't buy anything that is not on the list, we never go out to eat, I cook fresh food everyday and whats left over, I freeze it or eat it the next or manke something with the leftover and have the next day, we buy a large can of coffee and it kasts of couple of months, I wash clothes thes needs doing by hand and the res goes in the machine, I don't go to the movies as we don't have the time and it don't interest me these days as we are not youngsters, we don't use the car often as my hubby use his bicycle to work, so there are lots of saving there. | | I have a great trick that lets me use my credit card to rack up rewards but I'm never in debt. When I make a purchase with my credit card, I enter it in my checkbook in red ink and deduct it from my balance. When the bill comes, I add up those red entries and add them to my balance. I then write a check for the entire balance and my bill gets paid--I'm entering the charges like debits so I have no nasty surprises and always have a realistic balance. I drive my cars till they die, usually about 300,000 miles or more. I'm the cheapskate's cheapskate! | | | | | | |

| | those tips were really helpful. right now i am practicing a habit of buyig only things that i need at the moment or for tomorrow. In this way wont be splurging the supplies i had at present because they are just limited for a day or two. I would practice doing your tips and will tell you how it helped me and the experiences and challenges i will be facing if i follow them. I am a big spender so this tips would be a real challenge for me. Wish me luck | | | | | | |
